Pilots later ratified it on October 10, averting the planned job action. The deal covers pilots at Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge and is scheduled to expire September 29, 2027.
Did Air Canada pilots go on strike?
No. The pilots authorized union leaders to call a strike if necessary, but they did not go on strike. In August 2024, ALPA said 98 percent of its members participated in a strike-authorization vote and 98 percent of those participating voted to authorize job action. That vote gave union leaders authority to call a strike; it was not a strike itself. Air Canada said normal operations would continue after the tentative agreement was announced.
ALPA’s August 2024 announcement described the vote and the state of negotiations. The parties had begun bargaining in June 2023, moved to private mediation in January 2024, and entered conciliation in June after failing to reach an agreement.
When was the agreement reached and ratified?
- September 15, 2024: Air Canada and ALPA announced a tentative four-year agreement. ALPA’s Master Executive Council approved it to go to a membership vote; it was not yet ratified. Air Canada’s announcement said the companies would continue normal operations, while ALPA’s announcement described progress on compensation, retirement and work rules.
- October 10, 2024: ALPA announced that pilots had ratified the agreement. The union reported that 99 percent of eligible pilots cast ballots and 67 percent voted in favor. ALPA’s ratification announcement said the contract took effect immediately; Air Canada said it was retroactive to September 30, 2023, in its October 10 statement.
What the four-year deal covered
The agreement covers pilots employed by Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge. Air Canada described the covered group as more than 5,200 pilots; ALPA used a separate rounded figure of more than 5,400 pilots in union communications. Those are the parties’ reported figures, not an exact shared headcount.

- Officially licensed by the airline
- Die cast metal with plastic parts
- Makes a great souvenir or gift
When the tentative agreement was announced, detailed terms were confidential pending ratification and board approval. The public descriptions identified compensation, retirement and work rules as areas of progress. After ratification, ALPA characterized the contract as improving compensation and quality of life; Air Canada highlighted work-life balance improvements, flexibility and support for airline growth. Those descriptions do not provide specific wage percentages or clause-by-clause terms.
ALPA estimated that, if ratified, the agreement would create approximately $1.9 billion in additional value for pilots over its term. This was the union’s estimate, not a figure independently established by the contract announcement.

How long does the contract run?
The agreement was described as a four-year deal, retroactive to September 30, 2023, with a scheduled expiry date of September 29, 2027. It took effect when pilots ratified it on October 10, 2024. The September 15 announcement was therefore a tentative settlement, not the ratification date or the contract’s effective date.
