For eligible Air Canada flights departing on or after January 1, 2026, Aeroplan flight points are calculated from eligible spending rather than distance and fare option. The base rate is 1 point per $1 of base fare and carrier surcharges; taxes, fees, and third-party charges are excluded. The departure date determines which formula applies.
What changed—and when
Air Canada announced the change on August 6, 2025. Eligible flights departing on or before December 31, 2025 used the previous distance-and-fare-option formula. Eligible flights departing January 1, 2026 or later use the spend-based formula. The ticket purchase date is not the dividing line.
Under the new formula, the base earning rate is 1 Aeroplan point per eligible dollar of base fare and carrier surcharges. It is not 1 point per dollar of the full checkout total: applicable taxes, fees, and third-party charges do not count. Air Canada’s current flight-earning page explains the calculation.
How many points you earn with Elite status
Air Canada publishes these total flight-point rates per eligible dollar. The multiplier is determined by your Aeroplan Elite status at the time of travel.

Which flights and tickets follow the formula?
Air Canada-operated flights
For eligible flights operated by Air Canada, the spend formula applies regardless of which airline issued the ticket or how the flight was booked. The fare or booking class must still qualify; do not assume every fare earns points. Air Canada outlines fare eligibility and exclusions in its current earning terms.

Partner-operated flights

The Air Canada formula should not be assumed to apply to every Star Alliance or other partner flight. Check the current flight-earning terms for the specific itinerary before estimating points.
How to compare fares and estimate the effect
A higher fare may earn more points under a spend-based calculation, but more points do not automatically make the more expensive ticket better value. Compare the eligible amount, the fare cost, your status at travel, and how you plan to use Aeroplan points.

How the change relates to SQC and Elite status
Air Canada also announced a single path to Aeroplan Elite status using Status Qualifying Credits for activity from January 1, 2026 onward. It names eligible flight purchases, Aeroplan credit card spending, and activity with travel and everyday partners as possible SQC sources. That is a separate status-qualification system: flight points are earned for Aeroplan redemptions, while SQC count toward Elite qualification. Current thresholds and the terms for cards and partners should be checked in Air Canada’s 2025 program update.

What the old formula was
Before the change, eligible Air Canada flight-point earning depended on distance flown and fare option rather than the eligible dollars spent. Air Canada’s historical earning page describes that pre-2026 approach. For a transition-period flight, use the departure date to determine which rules govern it.
