Meal kits send ingredients and recipes; prepared meals arrive ready to heat. For a chef-led, heat-and-eat option, consider CookUnity. For meal kits, Marley Spoon is a strong starting point, while Home Chef and Sunbasket offer ways to mix lower-effort meals with cooking. There is no single winner for every household: menus, delivery coverage, dietary needs, and total cost vary.
Meal kits or prepared meals: choose your format first
Meal kits are for people willing to cook: they deliver ingredients and instructions, and the cooking and cleanup can take 30 minutes or more. Prepared meals arrive cooked and need only a short oven or microwave reheat. That distinction matters more than the word “gourmet” when comparing convenience and effort. Bon Appétit explains the difference between the formats.
- Choose a meal kit if you want to cook, control the final preparation, and have time for it.
- Choose prepared meals if minimizing hands-on work is the priority.
- Choose a hybrid if you want to alternate between cooking and reheating.
The nine services below are a needs-based shortlist, not a head-to-head ranking: published guides select services for different strengths and do not use one shared test or pricing method. Bon Appétit’s 2026 guide includes these nine category picks; WIRED’s September 2026 guide separately names Marley Spoon best meal kit overall, CookUnity best prepared meal service, and Green Chef for dietary restrictions and clean ingredients. 9 gourmet-leaning meal delivery services to consider
1. Marley Spoon — for cooking-focused variety
WIRED selected Marley Spoon as its best meal kit overall and reported that its tested menu included globally influenced recipes and some options that could be prepared in 15 minutes. That makes it a useful starting point if you want to cook but value variety and occasional faster meals. Check the current menu for actual prep times; a 15-minute option does not describe every recipe. WIRED’s September 2026 guide.

2. Home Chef — for mixing kits and lower-effort meals
Home Chef combines meal kits with a limited selection of prepared or oven-ready choices, making it a hybrid rather than a prepared-meal-first service. In NBC Select’s 2026 menu snapshot, about 10 prepared choices appeared among more than 30 weekly options; counts can change from week to week. NBC Select’s meal delivery comparison.
3. HelloFresh — for a broad meal-kit selection
HelloFresh is one of Bon Appétit’s 2026 meal-kit selections. Because menus and serving plans change, use the live menu and checkout to confirm that the current options suit your household rather than assuming a particular recipe range or plan is always available. Rank #2
4. CookUnity — for chef-led prepared meals
CookUnity is the clearest fit here for readers seeking prepared meals with chef-led recipes and a rotating range of global cuisines. Bon Appétit’s July 2026 review describes its meals as fresh rather than frozen. Its reported plans offered 4, 6, 8, 12, or 16 meals weekly, with average meal prices of $11–$14 depending on plan size; shipping varied by plan and location. These are source-reported details from July 2026, not a current quote, so confirm the full checkout total. Bon Appétit’s tested prepared-meal guide.
Bon Appétit senior commerce editor Olivia Tarantino described the restaurant-style presentation of some meals this way: “If you properly plated some of my CookUnity meals they really could pass as something I’d order at a restaurant.” That is her assessment of her tested meals, not a guarantee of how every dish will taste to every customer. 5. Dinnerly — for budget-minded meal-kit shoppers
Bon Appétit named Dinnerly its most affordable pick in its 2026 list. Treat that as a category selection, not a promise that it will be the lowest-cost choice for your household: compare the current per-serving price, delivery fee, minimum order, and number of servings at checkout. Bon Appétit’s 2026 meal-kit selections.
6. Hungryroot — for a grocery-and-meal hybrid
Bon Appétit identifies Hungryroot as a grocery-and-meal hybrid for people who would rather avoid some grocery shopping. It is not simply a conventional meal kit or a fully prepared-meal service, so review the current offerings and order flow to see whether its mix fits how you plan meals. Bon Appétit’s 2026 meal-kit selections.
Rank #4
7. Sunbasket — for meal kits plus prepared options
Sunbasket offers both meal kits and Fresh & Ready prepared meals, with dietary labels reported by NBC Select including gluten-free, soy-free, pescatarian, and vegetarian. In NBC Select’s 2026 pricing report, plans offered 2–5 weekly meals, meal-kit servings started at $12, Fresh & Ready meals at $10, and shipping was $6. Prices and plan details can change; check the current menu, label details, and delivered total before ordering. NBC Select’s meal delivery comparison.
8. Green Chef — for organic-focused and dietary-filter options
Bon Appétit names Green Chef its best organic meal kit, and WIRED recommends it for clean ingredients and dietary restrictions. Those descriptions make it worth checking if ingredient preferences or filters are central to your choice. “Organic” should not be read as a blanket claim about every ingredient or recipe: review the provider’s current certification wording and the specific menu item. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare the real cost and fit
A low advertised meal price does not necessarily mean a low weekly bill. Compare like with like: the number of people you are feeding, the number of meals in the order, delivery charges, and any minimum order. Then confirm the service delivers to your address and that its current menu meets your dietary needs.
- Check the menu and format. Decide whether you want ingredients to cook, prepared meals to reheat, or a mix. Look at actual current recipes rather than relying on a service’s broad category label.
- Check serving size and household fit. Confirm whether a plan is sold by meal, serving, or another unit, and whether prepared options are single-serving or intended for multiple people.
- Calculate the delivered weekly total. Add the meals you intend to order and shipping, then divide by the number of servings you will actually use. Verify minimums and any other checkout charges before subscribing.
- Verify dietary details on the item. A filter or label is a useful starting point, not a substitute for checking the ingredients and the provider’s current explanation of the claim.
- Review delivery and subscription controls. Check service availability for your address, delivery schedule, and the steps and deadlines to skip, pause, or cancel before placing an order.
Rates, shipping, availability, and weekly menus can change. The dated Sunbasket and CookUnity figures above are useful reference points from 2026, not guaranteed prices today; Home Chef’s weekly prepared-meal count is likewise a snapshot rather than a permanent menu promise.
