There is no established, jointly selected ranking of eight basketball shoes from coaches and players. But expert-informed picks from NBC Select and model testing from RunRepeat offer useful starting points: NBC Select’s 2025 guide highlights shoes for lightweight feel, traction and cushioning, while RunRepeat’s 2026 testing names the Nike KD 18 for traction. The right choice depends on your fit, playing style and court—not on a universal “best” label.

Which basketball shoes are best for your playing style?

Use these eight models as candidates, not as a ranked top eight. NBC Select’s 2025 guide supplies three category picks informed by players and trainers; RunRepeat’s 2026 guide supplies an independently tested traction pick; adidas and Nike provide manufacturer descriptions for the remaining models. Those sources do not establish that coaches and players jointly selected all eight.

Model Why it is on the list What the cited source says Fit, surface or evidence caveat
Nike KD 18 RunRepeat’s 2026 traction pick RunRepeat reports a 0.89 friction coefficient on hardwood, strong stability and shock absorption, and a weight of 14.9 oz (422 g). Its weight comparisons use men’s US size 9. RunRepeat cautions against it for wide feet. The reported weight is a tradeoff for players seeking a lighter shoe.
Nike Kobe 8 Protro NBC Select’s 2025 lightweight pick The guide notes its lower profile and breathable mesh upper. The source’s displayed price of $179.99 was historical, not a current quote; current price and availability are not established.
adidas D.O.N. Issue 6 NBC Select’s 2025 traction pick The guide notes a supportive upper. Some users cited by the guide report a bulky feel. Its displayed $120 price was historical, and current availability is not established.
Nike KD17 NBC Select’s 2025 cushioning pick Nike describes a forefoot Air Zoom unit, heel Air cushioning and ridged outsole; NBC Select selected it for cushioning. NBC Select displayed $97.97, discounted from $150, in its guide; those historical prices are not current pricing.
adidas Dame X Manufacturer-described option adidas describes Lightstrike cushioning, multidirectional traction and a breathable upper. These are adidas product claims, not independent test results.
adidas Harden Volume 10 Manufacturer-described all-rounder adidas presents it as an all-rounder with a low-cut design and Light midsole. This is manufacturer guidance, not independent validation.
adidas D.O.N. Issue 7 Manufacturer-described containment option adidas describes Lightstrike Pro cushioning and a mid-foot containment cradle. This is manufacturer product information, not an independent test.
Nike G.T. Hustle 3 Manufacturer-described cushioning option Nike describes high cushioning and responsiveness with multidirectional traction. This is a manufacturer description, not an independent test.

For the first three NBC Select picks, the source provides category labels rather than a universal order of merit. Product descriptions from brands can help identify features to investigate, but they do not show how a shoe performs for every player or on every court.

What should you look for in basketball shoes?

adidas’s official FAQ recommends prioritizing snug fit, traction and responsive cushioning that feels right for your body and playing style. NBC Select’s cited experts also discuss traction, cushioning and support as distinct considerations. Treat each separately when trying shoes rather than relying on a single comfort impression.

  • Durable, solid rubber outsole with herringbone traction pattern for ultimate on-court movement & control
  • Regular
  • Lace type: Standard tie
  • Fit and lockdown: The shoe should feel secure without painful pressure or excessive movement. A model that suits one player may not suit another foot shape; RunRepeat specifically flags the KD 18 as a poor choice for wide feet.
  • Traction: Grip helps with stopping and changing direction. The KD 18’s reported 0.89 hardwood friction coefficient is a RunRepeat lab result, not a guarantee of grip on dusty floors or outdoor surfaces.
  • Cushioning: Consider how much impact absorption and responsiveness you prefer. The NBC Select category pick is the KD17; adidas and Nike feature descriptions for other models are not comparative lab findings.
  • Support and containment: Assess whether the foot stays secure during lateral movement, along with the shoe’s base and stability. Do not equate a tall collar with proven injury prevention.
  • Weight: A lighter shoe may appeal to players who value a quick feel, but a category label alone does not tell you whether its fit and support work for you. The KD 18’s measured weight illustrates why comparing attributes matters.

Does a high-top provide more support?

Not by itself, according to RunRepeat’s review of more than 30 studies: the review found no scientific evidence that collar height affects athletic performance or ankle and foot injury outcomes. That is RunRepeat’s summary, not medical advice or proof that all shoe designs provide the same support.

RunRepeat recommends considering other structural features, including torsional rigidity, heel-counter stiffness, a wide base or outrigger, a grounded platform, lockdown and traction. Its testing methodology also describes SATRA TM144 testing on FIBA-approved flooring. A collar’s height is only one visible feature; evaluate how the shoe holds and stabilizes your foot as a whole.

How should you choose for your position and court?

Start with your own movement and fit

adidas offers a general position-based heuristic: guards may benefit from lighter, more flexible shoes, while forwards and centers often need more support and impact absorption. Position is not a rule for an individual player. Your movement, comfort, foot shape and preference for cushioning matter more than matching a position label to a model.

Match the shoe to the surface

Nike’s guidance recommends prioritizing durability and cushioning if you play frequently on concrete. Do not assume that recommendation applies equally to every outdoor model; the cited material does not establish outdoor durability for all eight shoes. For an indoor-focused traction claim, also consider that RunRepeat’s KD 18 measurement is specifically reported on hardwood.

Try the shoe before committing

  • Check that your heel and midfoot feel secure and that your toes have room without the foot sliding.
  • Make controlled lateral movements and stops to assess lockdown, stability and traction.
  • Compare cushioning and weight in a way that reflects your normal playing demands.
  • Check the seller’s current size availability, return policy and price; the historical prices in NBC Select’s 2025 guide are not current offers.

What do the expert picks establish—and what don’t they?

NBC Select’s 2025 guide is the clearest source here for picks associated with players and trainers: it names the Kobe 8 Protro for lightweight feel, the D.O.N. Issue 6 for traction and the KD17 for cushioning. It does not establish a consensus among coaches, nor does it supply eight distinct winners in the material available for these models.

RunRepeat’s 2026 guide contributes a separate kind of evidence: its KD 18 lab result and reported weight. adidas and Nike pages provide first-party feature descriptions. Those evidence types answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable: a product claim is not an independent test, and a category pick is not proof that a shoe is best for every player.
