These six clinician-informed options cover everyday walking, pavement comfort, stability, hard-to-fit feet and walking to work. They are starting points to try—not an official podiatrist-approved list, prescriptions or promises to treat a foot condition. Recommendations vary with a person’s feet, fit and activity; a shoe that works for one walker may not work for another.
What shoes do podiatrists recommend?
There is no universal list or certification. A 2026 guide by Podiatrist Tested says recommendations depend on the individual foot, and its model-level suggestions are specification-based options rather than winners from its measurement protocol. A 2025 shoe list from Foot & Ankle likewise advises trying shoes rather than assuming everyone needs the same model or the most stable option. Podiatrist Tested’s 2026 recommendations and Foot & Ankle’s 2025 shoe list are practice- and publisher-specific guidance, not a consensus.
For a useful first screen, consider the activity, the amount of cushioning and stability you prefer, the room your toes need, and whether the shoe’s structure suits your foot. Cleveland Clinic podiatrist Joy Rowland recommends breathable material, a firm heel, arch support and a wider toe box. She also cautions that a shoe that is too soft or insufficiently supportive can contribute to problems such as knee buckling or lower-back pain. Cleveland Clinic’s shoe-buying guidance does not make any one model right for everyone.
Six shoes to consider in 2026
These models come from Podiatrist Tested’s 2026 walking guide. Match each suggestion to its intended use, then try the exact model and width if possible. A recommendation is not a substitute for fit.
#1 Best Overall
- Women's lightweight running-inspired sneakers for everyday wear
- MESH UPPER: Textile and synthetic mesh upper for breathability and light weight
- TEXTILE LINING: Textile lining provides a soft, comfortable feel
- CUSHIONED MIDSOLE: Cloudfoam midsole for step-in comfort and superior cushioning
- RUBBER OUTSOLE: The rubber outsole provides outstanding grip and a sleek, low-profile look
1. Brooks Ghost 18: everyday neutral walking
The guide identifies the Ghost 18 as an everyday neutral starting point. It notes that the earlier Ghost 17 has been superseded, so check the current model and available stock rather than treating older-generation listings as the same shoe. This is a neutral option, not a stability shoe; consider whether that category suits your needs and how the exact pair feels on your foot.
2. HOKA Bondi 9: substantial cushioning for pavement
The Bondi 9 is presented as a high-cushioning choice for pavement miles or for someone whose heel pad has thinned. The guide describes a rocker that may assist the heel-to-toe push-off. Cushioning and rocker geometry are design features, not a guarantee of pain relief; try the shoe for your intended walking pace and distance.

3. HOKA Arahi 8: a stability-oriented option
The Arahi 8 is suggested for walkers whose arch collapses or whose shoes wear along the inside edge. The guide says its stability comes from the foam rather than a hard plastic post. That does not mean added stability is automatically better: choose it only if the feel and fit work for you.
4. New Balance 880v15: neutral shoe with broad width options
The guide recommends the 880v15 as a neutral option for hard-to-fit feet and says this model is offered in widths from narrow through 4E. Width availability applies to this model, not every shoe from the brand; confirm the exact width and try it on, checking that the forefoot has comfortable room without the foot sliding.
Rank #3
- The mesh upper offers a comfortable, breathable feel.
- The foam midsole delivers intuitive cushioning through comfort-focused rocker geometry.
- The outsole has an intuitive Nike design and flex grooves in the forefoot that create a comfortable and cushioned effect as you run.
- Touch points at the heel and tongue create a natural feel as you take the shoes on and off.
- Mesh on upper is more breathable than the Revolution 7, helping keep you cool.
5. HOKA Transport 2: walking between work and errands
The Transport 2 is described as a cushioned, rockered option with a less athletic-looking upper for walking to work. The guide cautions that it may still fall short of a formal dress code. Check workplace requirements as well as fit, and do not assume a more casual appearance makes it suitable for every office.
6. Brooks Adrenaline: stability option for flat feet
For a sixth shoe rather than an insole, a Michigan podiatry practice’s 2026 guide names the Brooks Adrenaline among its examples for flat feet; it also lists the New Balance 860. This is that practice’s recommendation, not a universal prescription or a claim that the shoe corrects flat feet. Try the Adrenaline in the exact size and width that fits, and compare its stability feel with a neutral shoe if you are unsure which category suits you. Balance Foot & Ankle’s 2026 guide also lists Brooks Ghost 16 and HOKA Bondi for plantar fasciitis, and wide-toe-box New Balance or Altra styles for bunions.

How to choose between cushioning, stability and fit
Start with what you will do in the shoes
Daily errands, long pavement walks and walking to work place different demands on footwear and appearance. Walking and running shoes can have overlapping features, but choose for the activity and environment you actually have in mind. If a foot condition is part of the decision, use a shoe list to generate options, not to diagnose what your foot needs.
Compare the shoe’s structure, not just its label
Cushioning may appeal if you want a softer-feeling ride on hard surfaces. A rocker changes how the shoe rolls from heel to toe and may be worth trying if bending at the toe joint is uncomfortable, but it does not promise symptom relief. Stability features can suit some walkers, but extra support is not a universal upgrade.

- ALL-DAY COMFORT — Designed for all-day wear and everyday running, this women’s shoe blends soft cushioning with neutral support
- BREATHABLE MESH UPPER — A mesh upper with no-sew overlays helps create a sleek fit and feel with breathable comfort
- DURABLE RUBBER OUTSOLE — Durable rubber outsole construction supports daily wear, workouts, and everyday athletic activity
- SECURE LACE-UP FIT — Lace-up closure helps provide a secure fit, while the lightweight 194 gram design is ideal for all day wear
A foot-surgeon guide describes checking whether the heel counter resists folding, the midfoot resists twisting, and the shoe bends at the ball of the foot rather than collapsing through the arch. These are practical checks, not a pass-or-fail medical test. Also check for breathable materials and arch support, as Rowland recommends.
Prioritize the fit of the exact model and width
Make sure the toe box gives your toes room and the heel feels secure. Widths differ by model, so a brand-wide assumption can lead to a poor fit. If you use an orthotic, check whether the exact shoe’s insole is removable and whether your orthotic fits without making the shoe cramped; do not assume every version is designed for one.
Are HOKA shoes podiatrist recommended?
Specific HOKA models appear in the cited clinician-informed guides: the Bondi 9 and Arahi 8 in Podiatrist Tested’s 2026 walking guide, and the Bondi in the Michigan practice’s plantar-fasciitis examples. That does not make every HOKA model suitable for every foot. Compare the model’s intended use, stability and fit with your needs; brand reputation alone cannot establish that a shoe is right for you.
When a shoe list is not enough
If foot pain is persistent, worsening or interfering with walking, seek clinical evaluation rather than relying on a shoe recommendation. A clinician can assess your symptoms and help determine whether footwear changes are appropriate for your situation.
