That is current career guidance, not a measured median or a verified salary range for calendar year 2025.
What is the UK pilot salary range?
The National Careers Service airline-pilot profile gives a range of £47,000 for starters to £150,000 for experienced pilots. The profile does not identify these figures as a 2025 survey result, nor does it say that they represent the typical or median salary. Treat them as broad career guidance rather than a promise of what an individual pilot will earn.

Why do pilot salaries vary?
Pay depends on more than the job title. The National Careers Service identifies airline size, rank, flying experience, company bonus schemes and allowances as factors that can affect earnings.
- Rank: First officers and captains have different roles and levels of responsibility.
- Experience and seniority: Time spent flying can influence progression and pay.
- Employer and pay structure: Airline size, bonus schemes and allowances can change total compensation. Compare the components of an offer, not just its headline salary.
The available evidence does not support a reliable airline-by-airline salary comparison. A British Airways pay-scale page maintained by Pilot Jobs Network labels a scale effective August 2025, but also warns that it is significantly out of date and says newer starting pay is closer to £79,000 plus allowances. Those are not verified BA rates, so they should not be treated as a dependable benchmark.

What do official 2025 earnings figures establish?
The Office for National Statistics’ 2025 Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) estimates are provisional and refer to the pay period that included 30 April 2025. ASHE uses employer-reported pay sampled through PAYE records and occupational definitions under SOC 2020. The ONS material reviewed does not provide a specific UK airline-pilot salary figure. It therefore cannot substantiate a pilot-only 2025 median or a full-year salary estimate.
The Civil Aviation Authority collects statistics from UK airlines, including quarterly fleet and personnel returns, but its airline data is not a source of pilot salary figures. Workforce counts and pay statistics answer different questions.
What salary figures do—and do not—mean
The £150,000 figure is the experienced end of a government career-profile range, not evidence that this is a typical 2025 salary. Likewise, the £47,000 starter figure is not a guarantee of an entry-level offer at every airline. Actual pay depends on the role, experience, employer and any additional pay components.
For a gender-pay context, Ryanair’s UK Gender Pay Gap Report 2025 says 97% of its UK pilots are male and 3% are female. It also says women and men are paid identically within each category. These are company workforce and within-category pay statements, not a salary range for UK pilots as a whole.

Potential routes into flying include university, direct application for some military aircrew, airline trainee schemes and private flying schools. The National Careers Service describes commercial pilot licensing, including CPL and ATPL routes, and medical-certificate requirements. It says pilots begin as co-pilots and can apply for a full ATPL after at least 1,500 flying hours; its profile says progression to captain usually takes three to five years after obtaining the full ATPL. These are career-profile descriptions, not a substitute for checking current licensing requirements with the CAA.
Training requires a substantial commitment as well as a possible route to higher earnings. The National Careers Service advises: “Pilot training requires a big investment in time and money, so it’s important to research the different routes and costs before committing to training.” Compare training costs, time, licensing requirements and likely employment path alongside potential pay.
Quick Recap
How to compare a pilot salary offer
- Confirm the position and rank, such as first officer or captain.
- Check whether the quoted amount is basic pay or includes allowances, bonuses or other variable compensation.
- Ask how experience or seniority affects progression under that employer’s pay structure.
- Compare the offer with the role and location in view; do not treat the broad National Careers Service range as a guaranteed employer scale.
