This guide covers personal checks, cashier’s checks, and certified checks—and explains how to handle, cash, deposit, verify, or stop them. A check’s funds showing as available does not prove the check is valid or that collection is final.
What is a bank check?
A personal check is a paper payment order drawn on the writer’s account. The recipient must deposit or cash it to access the money. A cashier’s check or certified check is a different instrument associated with a bank’s payment or certification process; confirm exactly what type of check you have with the institution that issued it. People also use “bank check” informally, so the name alone does not establish how the instrument works.
Checks can be useful when a recipient accepts them or when a paper record is wanted, but they involve delivery and deposit time, possible fees, and the risk of loss or fraud. A check may not provide immediate access to the money, and a bank may make funds available before it discovers a problem with the check. The CFPB explains how checks work.
How to write and endorse a personal check
Writing the check
- Enter the payee. Write the person or business receiving the payment on the payee line.
- Enter the amount. Fill in the numeric amount and the written amount, following the layout on the check.
- Date and sign it. Use the date you intend the check to be issued and sign it as required by your account.
- Record the payment. Note the amount, date, and payee in your register or another account-tracking method so you can reconcile your balance.
Keep the checkbook or other payment records secure. Your bank may offer its own instructions for completing checks; do not assume every check layout is identical.

Endorsing a check you receive
Follow the instructions on the check and your bank’s deposit requirements. If you want to restrict a check to deposit into your account, sign the back and write “for deposit only.” The CFPB says this means the check can only be deposited in the payee’s account. See its guidance on endorsing checks.
Can you cash a check at any bank or credit union?
No. A bank or credit union generally does not have to cash a check for someone who does not have an account there. The CFPB says an institution often will cash a check drawn on one of its customers’ accounts when the account has enough money, the check is no more than six months old, the person presenting it is the named payee, and acceptable identification is shown. Requirements, fees, and available services vary, so call the institution before going. Some institutions offer check cashing for a fee. Check the CFPB’s guidance on cashing checks.

When will a check deposit be available?
Deposit timing depends on the type of check, when and how you deposit it, your account history, and your bank’s policies. Under CFPB guidance, certain qualifying government, cashier’s, and certified checks deposited in person or at the institution’s ATM generally must be available by the next business day. Exceptions can allow longer holds, including for some new accounts, repeated overdrafts, suspected fraud, certain ATM deposits, and large deposits.
For a deposit over $5,525, CFPB guidance describes a general schedule for a local check: $225 available the next business day, up to $5,525 within two business days, and the amount above $5,525 generally within seven business days. These are general federal availability rules, not a guarantee for every deposit or account. Confirm the current schedule with your bank and consult the CFPB’s guidance on deposit holds.

Availability is not the same as final collection. A fraudulent check can appear in your account before the bank discovers it is fake, sometimes weeks later. If the bank reverses the deposit, you may owe the money. Do not spend or return money just because it appears available when you have not confirmed the check is legitimate.
Cashier’s, certified, and official checks: how to verify one
These instruments are not ordinary personal checks, but their appearance does not make them counterfeit-proof. If you need to verify a cashier’s or official check, independently look up the issuing bank’s official contact information and call it. Do not rely on a phone number printed on a suspicious check; it could connect you to a scammer. Ask the bank how it can confirm the item. The FDIC’s guidance on fake cashier’s and official checks explains this risk.

Common fake-check approaches
- Overpayment: An unfamiliar buyer sends a check for more than the agreed amount and asks you to send the difference back.
- Job or mystery-shopping offer: A supposed employer sends a check and tells you to forward some of the proceeds.
- Prize or inheritance: Someone claims you must pay taxes or fees after depositing a check to receive winnings or an inheritance.
Do not send money by wire, gift card, or another payment method in response to an unfamiliar check. The FTC warns: “If someone you don’t know sends you a check and asks for money back, that’s a scam.” If you have already deposited one, contact your bank promptly and do not send additional money. Read the FTC’s guidance on fake-check scams.

Requesting a stop payment
If a check has not been fully processed, contact your bank or credit union immediately to ask whether it can stop payment. Fees, request methods, and how long an order remains in effect vary. The CFPB describes state laws under which a timely written request often prevents payment for six months, with some cases lasting a year; the applicable law and your bank’s current policy matter. Follow the bank’s instructions and ask whether a written request is needed. See the CFPB’s stop-payment guidance.

If you wrote a post-dated check
A bank generally does not have to wait until the date written on a check before paying it. Notice to the bank and state law can affect the outcome. If you need to prevent early payment, contact the institution promptly and follow up in writing when appropriate. The CFPB explains post-dated checks.
What to do if a check is lost, stolen, or forged
A check you received is lost before you endorse it
Contact the person who wrote it and ask them to request a stop payment from their bank and issue a replacement. The writer’s bank can explain whether the original can still be stopped and whether a fee applies. See the CFPB’s advice for a lost check.
A check was stolen or the endorsement was forged
Contact your bank quickly if a check you wrote or received was stolen, altered, or endorsed without authorization. Explain what happened and ask what documentation and next steps are required. Legal protections and deadlines can depend on state law and on whether the check was processed electronically, so act promptly rather than waiting to see whether the payment is reversed. The CFPB covers stolen or forged checks and forged signatures.
Choosing a check versus another payment method
There is no universally best payment method for every situation. Compare the practical trade-offs before you pay or accept a check:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Access to funds: Consider delivery time and any deposit hold; an available balance does not prove that a check has cleared permanently.
- Fees and account needs: Check whether cashing or stopping payment costs money and whether the recipient needs an account or acceptable identification.
- Loss and recovery: A paper check can be lost in transit; ask the bank promptly about stopping payment or replacement options.
- Fraud exposure: Be especially cautious if a stranger asks you to return part of a check’s value or forward its proceeds.
Because fees and policies differ by institution, ask the relevant bank or credit union for its terms before relying on a check for a time-sensitive payment.
