Seven places to investigate are Mussomeli, Pratola Peligna, Sant’Elia a Pianisi, Biccari, Piazza Armerina, Cammarata and Troina. A recent roundup also names Zungoli; verify each municipality’s current notice and inventory before making plans. Mussomeli documents a €1 scheme, while Sambuca di Sicilia’s official listings currently label its homes €3, not €1.
Are there really €1 houses in Italy?
Yes, some municipalities have offered properties at a symbolic price of one euro, but “$1 homes” is an imprecise shorthand. The programs are local initiatives priced in euros, not one nationwide offer. The European Commission’s 2024 discussion of regional housing mentions €1 homes in Mussomeli and Sambuca as an approach to attracting and retaining people in rural communities (European Commission, 2024).
Prices and availability can change between rounds. Mussomeli’s Comune publishes information and an application request for its €1 procedure; those pages were last updated on 30 May 2025. Sambuca di Sicilia’s official property page is titled “Elenco immobili in vendita a 3 euro” and links to its notice and application materials. That is evidence of €3 listings there, not a current €1 price (Comune di Mussomeli; Comune di Sambuca di Sicilia).
A town named in a recent article is a lead to check, not proof that it has an unassigned home or an open application period. A January 2026 overview lists the following seven places among locations associated with €1-home schemes; it does not establish live inventory or open buyer calls for all of them (idealista/news, January 2026 overview).

Seven places to investigate
- Mussomeli, Sicily. The Comune publishes a €1 acquisition procedure and an application request. Its municipal pages describe requirements including a renovation project, a guarantee, and buyer responsibility for deed and ancillary expenses. Check the current municipal notice and property documents for the terms that apply to a specific home.
- Pratola Peligna, Abruzzo. Named in the January 2026 overview as a place associated with a €1-home scheme. The overview does not establish whether a buyer call or unassigned property is currently available.
- Sant’Elia a Pianisi, Molise. Also identified in the 2026 overview; confirm current status and terms with the municipality.
- Biccari, Puglia. Listed as a scheme location in the 2026 overview, but that listing alone does not confirm available homes or an open application round.
- Piazza Armerina, Sicily. Named in the same overview. Verify whether its local program is active and whether any property remains available.
- Cammarata, Sicily. Included among the locations associated with €1 homes. A roundup is not a municipal offer or a live inventory.
- Troina, Sicily. Also named in the 2026 overview. Contact the Comune for current notices, eligibility and property-specific information.
Zungoli, in Campania, is another location named in the January 2026 overview. It is an additional lead rather than one of the seven above; the cited overview likewise does not confirm current availability there.
What the symbolic price leaves out
The €1 or €3 headline price is not the full cost of acquiring and making a home usable. In Mussomeli, the Comune’s published procedure describes a renovation project, a guarantee and buyer-paid deed and ancillary costs. Those requirements cannot be assumed to apply identically elsewhere. Municipalities may set different conditions, and a particular building may have its own constraints.

Before applying, read the municipality’s current notice and the documents for the specific property. Confirm the required renovation plan, guarantee amount and terms, deadlines to submit a project and complete the work, eligibility rules, and which deed, registration and other transaction expenses the buyer pays. Check the building’s condition and whether the proposed work is permitted. If these details are not stated in the notice, ask the Comune or a qualified local professional rather than treating the headline price as a total budget.
How to compare towns before you commit
Use the same checks for every property so a low advertised price does not obscure a more demanding process or an unsuitable location:

- Confirm the opportunity is live. Look for a current municipal buyer call, its deadline and a list of properties still available or unassigned.
- Compare obligations. Record the renovation-plan deadline, completion deadline, guarantee requirements and any eligibility conditions.
- Build a full transaction budget. Identify notary, registration, deed and other purchase expenses, then price the work needed for the actual building.
- Check the property and permitted work. Establish its condition, required repairs and whether the planned renovation is allowed.
- Assess everyday access. Consider services and practical access in the location, not only the acquisition price.
Available municipal information confirms different prices and procedures, but it does not provide comparable current deadlines, costs or inventory for all seven places. Compare only figures stated in the current notices for the homes you are considering.
