Why does Sun Country center its network on MSP?
1. Minnesota is its home market
Sun Country describes itself as Minnesota’s hometown airline and identifies MSP as its home market. That gives the carrier an established base for building a network around local travelers rather than maintaining several competing hubs. Sun Country Airlines Holdings’ 2025 Form 10-K describes its MSP home market and network strategy.
2. Most of its flights connect to MSP
On its undated “Our Story” page, Sun Country says nearly 94% of its flights originate from or return to Minneapolis–St. Paul. That is the airline’s own reported figure, not an independent measurement, but it illustrates how strongly its schedule is organized around MSP.
3. Leisure demand changes with the season
Sun Country says demand peaks around winter vacations and spring break, July, Minnesota’s October MEA weekend, and holidays. It describes its winter flying as generally north-to-south and its summer flying as more east-to-west. A seasonal pattern gives the airline a reason to shift where and when it flies, rather than keep multiple hubs operating year-round.

4. It can move capacity between markets and business lines
In its 2025 Form 10-K, the company says it adjusts capacity by day of the week, time of year, and line of business to pursue what it considers the most profitable peak-demand flying opportunities. It considers flying from both MSP and non-MSP markets. The filing reports that Sun Country served approximately 95 MSP markets and 17 non-MSP markets in 2025; those counts describe markets served, not additional hubs.
5. Charter and cargo work complement scheduled flights
Sun Country combines scheduled passenger service with charter and cargo operations, sharing crews and other resources across passenger and cargo work. The company says cargo revenue supports scheduled service during off-peak months. That flexibility helps explain how the airline can accommodate seasonal passenger demand without building its identity around several permanent hubs.

How is a hub different from a seasonal route?
A hub is a central organizing point for an airline’s network. A seasonal route or outstation is a place the airline serves at certain times; its presence on the route map does not, by itself, make that city a hub. Sun Country’s company history lists seasonal service from Duluth, Milwaukee, Madison, Appleton, Tulsa, and Dallas–Fort Worth, including summer service from Dallas–Fort Worth to the Caribbean and Mexico.
The distinction matters: Sun Country can fly from cities outside MSP without establishing them as year-round network centers. The company’s 2025 Form 10-K likewise describes capacity from both MSP and non-MSP markets, while identifying MSP as its home market.

Could Sun Country’s hub strategy change?
Sun Country’s 2025 Form 10-K says it entered a merger agreement with Allegiant on January 11, 2026, and describes closing conditions and an expected closing in the second half of 2026. The agreement was pending in that filing. The Associated Press reported on January 12, 2026, that the proposed combined airline would operate under the Allegiant name while retaining a significant Minneapolis–St. Paul presence. The proposed transaction is separate from the reasons Sun Country developed its existing MSP-centered network; it does not establish that another hub will be created.
