Southwest Airlines has historically stood apart through a primarily point-to-point network, an all-Boeing 737 fleet, deliberate airport and aircraft-utilization choices, frequent service, and an open-seating customer experience. Some signatures have changed: assigned seating began January 27, 2026. Its model today blends those operating foundations with more connections and new products and services.
How is Southwest Airlines different from other airlines?
Southwest’s differences are choices about how to organize its network, aircraft, airport operations, and customer experience—not proof that it is always cheaper, faster, or more reliable than another carrier. In its 2025 Form 10-K, the company described a primarily point-to-point network and a single aircraft type, while also documenting changes that make the current model less like its historic shorthand.
1. It uses a primarily point-to-point network, with connecting options
In a traditional hub-and-spoke structure, flights concentrate through major hubs, where passengers transfer to reach other destinations. Southwest says its point-to-point system allows direct service between destinations without requiring connecting service. That can mean a traveler can fly nonstop between cities rather than route through a central hub.
Southwest is not a pure point-to-point airline. It has increasingly organized its network around core stations, combining nonstop routes with planned one-stop connections. The company says this approach is intended to improve connectivity, reliability, and the ability to recover from disruptions. Its 2025 Form 10-K reported service to 117 destinations across 42 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and ten near-international countries as of December 31, 2025. Southwest 2025 Form 10-K

2. One aircraft type simplifies the fleet
Southwest operates Boeing 737 aircraft as its single aircraft type. The company says a common fleet simplifies scheduling, maintenance, flight operations, safety management, and employee training. It reported 803 Boeing 737 aircraft as of December 31, 2025. A single type is a structural choice, not by itself a guarantee of lower costs or better performance on every route.
3. Airport selection and aircraft utilization are part of its cost strategy
Southwest says it serves secondary or downtown airports where available, which are typically less congested than the hubs used by some competitors. It links airport choice to scheduling aircraft with less ground time, high asset utilization, and lower requirements for aircraft and gate facilities. Those are the company’s stated operating rationales; actual journey time and operating outcomes vary by route, airport, schedule, and conditions.

4. Frequent service extends beyond short hops
Frequent service on selected short-haul routes is part of Southwest’s model, but it does not describe the entire network. The company also operates mid-range and long-haul nonstop flights and says it has shifted toward longer flights as short-haul demand changed. In 2025 it introduced redeye flying; its 2025 Form 10-K reported more than 50 peak-day redeye flights during peak periods.
5. Its customer experience is being reworked
Open seating was a historical signature
For decades, Southwest used open seating rather than assigning seats in advance. Passengers boarded in groups and chose available seats. The company connected the approach to quick aircraft turns in its primarily short-haul operation, but it is no longer current policy.

Assigned seating began in January 2026
Southwest began assigned seating on January 27, 2026. The current system includes standard, preferred, and extra-legroom seats, along with revised boarding groups. Southwest said its own research found that 80 percent of its customers and 86 percent of passengers who choose other airlines wanted assigned seats. Those are company-reported research figures published September 26, 2024, not independent or current market-wide statistics. Southwest announcement, September 26, 2024
The change is part of a broader shift. Southwest’s 2025 Form 10-K also describes vacation packages, international partnerships, expanded booking distribution, overnight operations, fare changes, and bag fees for most fare products introduced in 2025, with specified exceptions. The filing therefore does not support treating free checked bags as universal across current fares. Southwest 2025 Form 10-K

What the changes mean for Southwest’s model
The underlying model still emphasizes a common 737 fleet, point-to-point flying, and deliberate use of airports and aircraft time. But connectivity is more intentional, the route mix includes longer and overnight flights, and the customer proposition has moved beyond open seating. The result is an evolving operating model rather than the unchanged version often associated with Southwest’s earlier growth.
