The best coworker gift is one that fits the person, the occasion and your workplace’s norms—not simply the most universally “safe” item. Start with a shared spending limit, consider whether the recipient would actually use the gift, and check preferences before choosing food, fragrance or anything that needs a particular device.

How to choose a coworker gift

Match the gift to what you know about the recipient: their interests, practical needs, the occasion and how well you know them. A useful desk item can be a poor choice if they already have one; a hobby kit can feel personal and welcome when you know they enjoy trying new activities. Indeed’s guide to coworker gifts also recommends considering the time of year and the giver’s relationship to the recipient.

  • Check workplace policy first. Some organizations set rules about gift amounts or who may give gifts to whom. Follow those policies and any team exchange limit.
  • Keep the gesture proportionate. For a boss, etiquette expert Diane Gottsman recommends a modest, usable gift rather than something lavish or intimate. She advises against wine, cologne and ties. These are etiquette recommendations, not universal rules; employer policy and local norms take priority.
  • Handle selective personal gifts discreetly. If you are giving something personal to only a few colleagues, Gottsman recommends doing so outside the office rather than making others feel excluded.
  • Check before gifting food or fragrance. Allergies, dietary restrictions and scent preferences can turn a well-meant present into an awkward one.

For a scheduled exchange, stay within its announced range. For other occasions, agree on a shared limit if one exists rather than assuming a higher spend will make the gift more thoughtful. As gift concierge founder Alyse Dermer told Fast Company, “It doesn’t need to be expensive; it just needs to be thoughtful.”

14 gift ideas, matched to the coworker

These examples were described in WIRED’s October 2025 coworker-gift guide. They are starting points, not one-size-fits-all picks. Its listed prices reflect that guide’s 2025 publication period, not verified current prices; check today’s price, stock and product details before buying. The source title promised 17 items, but the entries below are the 14 substantiated here.

For a cheerful or tactile desk

  • Hoptimist Classic Bumble: A small, bobbing Danish-designed desk accessory for someone who enjoys playful objects.
  • Bearaby Hugget (Small): A knot-shaped fidget pillow for a coworker who likes tactile desk items. Consider whether they have space for it and would welcome a personal desk object.
  • LEGO Icons Succulents Building Kit: A buildable display for a LEGO fan or plant enthusiast who may prefer not to care for live plants. WIRED says the kit includes nine plants.

For someone who likes coffee, tea or snacks

  • Hydro Flask Coffee with Flex Sip Lid: An insulated stainless-steel travel mug for a known coffee or tea drinker. WIRED describes it as leakproof and fitting most cup holders; the guide listed a 16-ounce option at Amazon and 16- and 20-ounce sizes at REI. Check current sizing and compatibility before buying.
  • East Fork The Mug: A handmade ceramic mug described by WIRED as holding up to 12 ounces and being dishwasher- and microwave-safe. A good candidate only if the recipient would appreciate another mug.
  • Dandelion Chocolate Single-Origin Truffle Collection: Specialty chocolate for someone whose tastes you know. WIRED says the cacao comes from five regions: Colombia, Ecuador, Belize, Tanzania and Madagascar. Its guide price was $10 above the guide’s stated budget, so it is not a low-cost default; check dietary needs and current price.
  • TokyoTreat Snack Box: A themed Japanese snack assortment for someone who enjoys trying unfamiliar treats. WIRED described 12 to 17 items and a booklet in the box; confirm current contents, subscription cost and shipping. Check dietary restrictions before choosing a snack gift.

For a planner, hobbyist or puzzle fan

  • Roterunner Purpose Planner: An undated planner with work, home, project and brainstorming sections for someone who likes organizing tasks. First consider whether they already have a preferred planning system.
  • The Woobles Crochet Amigurumi Kit: A crochet starter kit framed by WIRED for a beginner or intermediate hobbyist, especially someone who likes trying new activities.
  • Le Puzz ME-ow Time: A 1,000-piece cat-themed puzzle for someone who enjoys puzzles and would like its subject and humor.

For practical charging or carrying

  • Spigen OneTap Pro 3 Cryomax: A charging stand for a compatible iPhone and Qi2 setup. WIRED describes charging up to 15 watts and a built-in fan; it notes that a USB-C cable is included but a 25-watt-or-higher adapter is separate. Confirm the recipient’s phone and charging setup before choosing it.
  • Anker Nano Power Bank: A compact charging option. WIRED lists a 5,000 mAh capacity and versions with rotating USB-C or Lightning connectors, plus a USB-C port. Connector and model details can differ, so verify the exact version against the recipient’s device.
  • BAGGU Horizontal Zip Duck Bag: A machine-washable tote that WIRED says can carry a 15-inch laptop alongside everyday items. Consider whether the recipient uses a tote and whether its size suits their commute.

For someone who enjoys home fragrance

  • Pura Mini: A small-space fragrance diffuser for a recipient who enjoys scented rooms. WIRED describes app scheduling and says fragrance can last 30 days at six to eight hours of use per day; those are claims in the guide, not independent test results. Check scent preferences and current refill arrangements before gifting.

Choose by occasion and relationship

Work anniversaries, promotions, departures, life events, holidays and general appreciation can all be reasons to give a coworker a gift, according to Indeed. The occasion helps set the tone: a group card or modest shared gift may suit a team celebration, while a hobby-related present is better reserved for a recipient whose interests you know.

A quick decision check before you buy

  1. Set the limit: Check the employer’s policy and any agreed exchange cap before browsing.
  2. Pick the recipient fit: Choose a known interest, practical need or occasion—not a generic item just because it is popular.
  3. Check constraints: Confirm allergies and dietary preferences for food, scent preferences for fragrance, device compatibility for chargers and available space for desk items.
  4. Consider workplace visibility: If the gift is personal and not being given to everyone, give it privately outside the office.
  5. Verify the purchase details: Product prices, stock, retailer listings and specifications can change. The WIRED guide was updated in October 2025, so its prices should be treated as historical examples rather than current offers.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
