Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDan Gelbart’s 18-part prototyping video series is presented as a practical introduction to making things for students and researchers whose main expertise lies outside fabrication. A 2015 Make: article by Matt Freund describes its central idea: build useful things quickly by learning to work thoughtfully with shop tools, materials, and assembly methods.
What the 18 lessons cover
Freund’s 2015 Make: article frames the series as an accessible course in how to build things, rather than a specialized fabrication manual. It says the lessons begin with practical use and modification of Gelbart’s preferred shop tools, then range into alternative materials, conventional machining, specific applications, and precision devices.
The article does not reproduce the titles or a complete outline of all 18 videos. Its clearest example is lesson 8, which focuses on making custom project enclosures. The series is best understood as a bridge to broader shop processes—not as a promise that every project can be replicated with basic equipment.
Lessons in designing and building enclosures
Plan the sequence before bending sheet metal
In its discussion of enclosure-making, Make: advises considering which direction each sheet-metal bend should go so the bends can be made on a brake. That makes the work sequence part of the design: a bend that blocks access or makes a later operation awkward can complicate an otherwise simple enclosure.

Make covers sit cleanly
The featured workflow includes recessing covers to avoid sharp edges and chipped paint. It also includes cutting the enclosure form, correcting mistakes, and powder coating. The article presents these as practical steps in the highlighted project, not as a universal specification for every enclosure.
Design for assembly and service
Gelbart’s advice, as quoted by Make:, is: “I cannot overemphasis the importance of making everything with keyholes and slots and captive hardware.” Keyholes and slots can help an enclosure hang or locate during assembly, while captive hardware keeps fasteners with the part. The useful design question is whether the enclosure will be easier to assemble and service than one that depends only on ordinary screw holes.

The packaging is sturdy and durable, and the interior is carefully designed, sorted, and stored in a small footprint. All parts are placed in a fixed location for easy handling. Whether you are a professional or a hobbyist, you can easily use this computer toolkit. This tool is the perfect gift, add it to the cart now
Choose a cutting approach around the project
Make: reports that some projects start with waterjet cutting and that Gelbart calls a plasma cutter a lower-cost alternative. The article does not provide a measured cost comparison, operating instructions, or safety guidance. It therefore supports only a high-level takeaway: equipment choice depends on what is available and what the project requires.
For a small enclosure project, assess the options against the actual constraints rather than assuming one tool is best:

- Material and thickness: Confirm that the process and available equipment can handle the stock you plan to use.
- Cut geometry: Consider whether the design needs straight cuts or more complex shapes.
- Access to a bending brake: If the design depends on folded sheet, ensure the planned bends can be made with the brake available to you.
- Workspace and budget: A process that requires equipment you cannot access may not be practical, even if it suits the design.
- Finishing: Account for how edges, covers, and coatings affect the final fit and appearance.
These are project-planning considerations, not performance comparisons tested or quantified by Make: or Gelbart in the article.
Learn beyond the most familiar maker tools
The series’s broader scope—alternative materials, machining, applications, and precision devices—encourages learners to look past plastic 3D printing and laser cutting. That does not mean every viewer needs to buy specialized machinery. The more useful lesson is to understand what a project demands, then learn the process or find access to equipment capable of doing that work.

For readers interested in sheet-metal enclosures, a mini sheet-metal bending brake is one possible task-enabling tool. The Make: article does not name a model or establish a current price, capacity, or suitability for a particular project. Check a tool’s capacity against the material and dimensions you intend to bend before choosing one.

Make: published the account on March 20, 2015, and describes the course, its enclosure example, and the quoted design advice. It characterizes Gelbart’s accumulated tinkering experience as “Forty years”; that is the article’s description, not a separately documented calculation. It also reported a $20 price for diamond-glass plates from supermarket scanners used as a sandblaster window. That is a 2015 figure, not a current price or a product recommendation.

The article is a useful introduction to the series, but it is not a full transcript, a current equipment guide, or independent evidence that the techniques produce measured outcomes. Its lesson for a new maker is practical: start by understanding the tools you can access, plan fabrication around their limits, and design parts with assembly and repair in mind.
