No business is recession-proof, but some meet recurring needs that customers may find harder to postpone. The 17 ideas below are practical hypotheses—not proven recession winners or a ranking. Whether one works depends on local demand, competition, costs, regulation, and customers’ ability to defer or substitute the service.

What makes a business potentially resilient in a recession?

A useful starting point is whether the business solves a recurring or urgent problem. A broken pipe, essential vehicle repair, or dependable childcare may be difficult to put off; a larger remodel or optional convenience may be easier to delay. Even essential services can face fewer customers, price pressure, rising costs, or late payments during a downturn.

The Small Business Administration’s 2018 discussion of “recession-proof” franchises uses need-oriented services as a screening idea, not as evidence that specific businesses perform well in recessions. No comparable historical ranking establishes which of the business categories below lost the least revenue, closed least often, or recovered fastest. “Proven” should therefore mean grounded in practical, recurring needs—not empirically proven recession performance.

17 business ideas to investigate

These ideas are not equally resilient. Urgent repairs and care services may address needs that are harder to defer; resale, lawn care, and meal delivery can be more exposed to discretionary spending or price competition. For every option, local demand, pricing, operating costs, qualifications, competition, and customers’ ability to postpone spending determine viability.

1. Repair and maintenance services

Appliance, bicycle, small-engine, or general home repair may appeal to customers who consider fixing an item instead of replacing it. That substitution is plausible, not demonstrated recession performance. You will need appropriate skills and tools, and should account for liability, travel, parts, and local competition.

2. Auto repair and routine maintenance

Drivers may keep existing vehicles longer rather than buy replacements, creating a possible market for repair and maintenance. Check vehicle ownership in your service area, competition, parts access, insurance, and the technical qualifications needed for the work you plan to offer.

3. Plumbing service

Leaks and plumbing failures can require prompt attention. Licensing rules, response expectations, tools, insurance, and the cost of offering emergency service can be significant barriers. Verify local requirements before advertising work.

4. Heating and cooling repair

Heating and cooling equipment needs upkeep and sometimes urgent repairs, but demand can vary by season and climate. Certification, specialized equipment, labor availability, and the cash needed to manage seasonal swings all affect the business model.

5. Electrical repair and safety work

Some electrical faults and safety issues are difficult to ignore. Work is governed by location-specific licensing and code requirements, so confirm exactly what you may legally do and whether your qualifications and insurance match the services offered.

6. Roofing and weatherproofing repair

Leaks and weather damage can make repairs necessary, while customers may postpone larger projects. Estimate material costs, insurance exposure, seasonality, and local weather-related demand. A small repair service and a full replacement contractor have different capital and cash-flow needs.

7. Cleaning services

Residential, move-out, and commercial cleaning can produce repeat bookings. However, households or businesses may reduce service frequency or switch to a lower-cost provider. Consider whether recurring contracts are available and how travel, supplies, labor, and customer turnover affect margins.

8. Pest control

Recurring prevention and active infestations make pest control a service worth investigating. Local pest patterns, licensing, chemical handling rules, equipment, and insurance shape what you can offer and what it costs to operate.

9. Lawn care and property maintenance

Routine upkeep can create repeat work, but property owners may reduce service or do the work themselves when money is tight. Demand is seasonal in many locations, and equipment, fuel, labor, and travel costs can weigh on margins.

10. Home care and nonmedical senior support

Help with daily tasks can meet ongoing needs. Be clear about the boundary between nonmedical assistance and medical care: do not offer or imply medical services unless appropriately licensed. Trust, staffing, screening, insurance, and local regulation are central considerations.

11. Childcare

Families need dependable care to work, but that does not guarantee demand or make the business low-risk in a downturn. Affordability, staffing, facility requirements, insurance, and local licensing affect both startup feasibility and ongoing costs.

12. Pet care

Walking, grooming, boarding, and basic pet services can serve owners who need help caring for animals. Customers may trade down or defer some services, so test willingness to pay locally. Animal-care capability, insurance, facilities, and any applicable local rules matter.

13. Bookkeeping and payroll support

Small firms need accurate records and financial administration. The SBA notes that tracking revenue and expenses can help a business run smoothly and describes accounting support options, including CPAs and online services. Credibility, accuracy, secure handling of client information, and a reliable way to find clients are essential.

14. Tax preparation

Tax filing creates recurring seasonal work, but revenue may be concentrated in part of the year. Research qualifications and rules for the services you intend to provide, along with software costs, data security, insurance, and a plan for off-season income.

15. IT support and cybersecurity for small firms

Small businesses rely on technology and may need help maintaining systems and responding to security concerns. Define the scope of your service, work within your competence, and use sound security practices. Do not promise protection from all attacks; consider liability and how you will handle incidents beyond your expertise.

16. Resale of used goods or consignment

Price-conscious customers may seek lower-cost used items, but demand alone does not guarantee a viable margin. Test sourcing, inventory turnover, item condition, storage, returns, and competition across local and online channels before committing to a large inventory.

17. Budget-oriented meal preparation or essential grocery delivery

Household food needs and convenience may support demand, but food costs and delivery can make the economics difficult. Check permits, food-handling requirements, delivery costs, labor, pricing, and likely order frequency. Calculate whether each order can contribute enough toward overhead before presenting the idea as attractive.

How to compare ideas before investing

Use the same questions for each option rather than choosing based on a claim that one industry is recession-proof. The SBA recommends researching customers and competitors, estimating startup costs, and calculating break-even points. Costs and launch requirements vary by business type and location.

  • Requirements and liability: Identify required permits, training, licenses, insurance, and rules for your location and service.
  • Timing and concentration: Look for seasonal revenue, dependence on a few large customers, and gaps between doing work and getting paid.
  • Break-even sales: Estimate how many jobs, orders, or recurring customers you need to cover costs. Use local prices and your actual cost assumptions rather than a generic startup-cost figure.

Useful questions include: Who pays for this solution? What is the lowest-cost way to test demand? Which costs remain if sales drop? How many repeat customers would cover overhead? Answers from local customer interviews, competitor research, and small tests are more useful than an unsupported national claim.

Build a plan for interruptions as well as weaker sales

A business can face operational shocks in any economic climate. The SBA advises owners to assess realistic local hazards, prepare an accessible response plan, and plan for recovery. Its business-management resources also point to continuity planning that identifies critical functions and recovery strategies. For a small business, that can mean documenting essential processes, protecting access to key records, identifying backup suppliers or ways to serve customers, and knowing how operations could resume after an interruption.

Keep cash-flow assumptions conservative. Avoid taking on debt based on optimistic sales projections, and examine how a shortfall in customers, a delayed payment, or an interruption would affect the ability to meet fixed costs.

Use current small-business figures as context, not proof

The SBA Office of Advocacy’s Frequently Asked Questions About Small Business 2026, published February 3, 2026, reports 36,207,130 U.S. small businesses. It also reports that small businesses employ 62.3 million people, or 45.9% of private-sector workers; account for 43.5% of U.S. GDP; and pay 38.7% of total private-sector payroll. Those are aggregate measures of small businesses, not evidence that any one category on this list is resilient in a recession.

Plan the business locally before launch

Start with the SBA’s business-planning guidance for market research, competitor analysis, startup costs, and break-even concepts. Then use its launch guidance to consider location, business structure, registration, tax IDs, permits, and insurance. Requirements depend on the activity and jurisdiction; confirm them with the relevant local and state authorities before taking customers.

For operational planning, the SBA’s business-management resources cover accounting and continuity topics. Its page on preparing for emergencies addresses assessing hazards and planning for recovery. Use those resources to build a plan around the specific risks of the business you choose, rather than assuming the category itself will protect you.
