The original 12-category list below was published in 2023; newer evidence from Shopify reflects sales by US Shopify merchants, not every marketplace or country. Use the categories as ideas to test, then weigh demand against costs, competition and customer fit.
How current is this list?
Website Builder Expert’s 2023 article offered twelve broad product categories as ideas, not a proven ranking of current bestsellers. Shopify’s April 27, 2026 guide provides a more recent signal, drawing on products sold by US Shopify merchants. It is useful for spotting categories with activity on that platform, but it does not establish demand across all countries, marketplaces or online sellers.
Shopify distinguishes trending products—those with above-average growth in sales or search interest over a period—from products with steadier, year-round demand. A sharp increase may be seasonal or temporary, so a trend is a lead to investigate, not a forecast of what will sell next.

These are the categories in the original 2023 list. Newer Shopify examples are included where its 2026 guide offers relevant evidence; those examples are not claims that every item in a category is currently a bestseller.

Kitchen utensils and appliances
Small cooking tools can be straightforward to demonstrate in product photos or videos, while appliances may bring more sourcing, shipping and support considerations. Shopify includes kitchen appliances among leading categories for its US merchants; that is a category signal, not proof of demand for a specific utensil or appliance.

Food products
Packaged foods may attract customers looking for a particular ingredient, flavor or dietary fit. Before choosing a product, account for shelf life, shipping conditions, labeling and rules that apply where you sell. Shopify’s current US merchant list includes meat and alcoholic beverages, but does not establish demand for every type of food.

Clothing
Clothing spans a broad range of audiences and price points, but fit, sizing, returns and competition can make the economics difficult. Shirts, pants, dresses, activewear, coats, underwear and other apparel categories appear in Shopify’s list of leading products sold by US merchants. Shopify also identifies T-shirts as the most popular clothing category among its merchants; this supports considering the category, not assuming a particular design will sell.

Beauty products
Skincare, makeup, shampoo, soap and fragrance give sellers several distinct product types to evaluate. Shopify lists skincare, makeup, shampoo and soap, and perfume and cologne among leading categories for its US merchants. It reports that those merchants sold over 23 million bars of soap and more than 18 million bottles of shampoo in 2024. Those figures describe Shopify merchant sales, not total US market sales or a guarantee for a new store.

Home storage
Storage products can solve a visible, practical problem, but bulky items may raise fulfillment costs. The current Shopify category list does not provide a specific home-storage sales signal, so check demand for the exact product and audience rather than treating the broader category as validated.

Games consoles
Consoles and related equipment can draw interest around product launches and holiday periods, but demand may depend on availability, timing and competition. The Shopify list does not establish a current console-specific trend. Research the particular model and sales channel before committing to inventory.

Phones and accessories are different businesses: a handset may involve high upfront inventory costs, while accessories vary widely in fit and quality. The original list’s phone-ownership figures are dated, so they should not be used as current evidence. Shopify’s 2026 list does not provide a phone-specific demand ranking.

CBD is a regulated category whose rules vary by location and product type. Confirm the laws, platform policies, labeling requirements and shipping restrictions that apply to your intended market before investing. The current Shopify list does not establish a CBD demand signal.

Coffee
Coffee can suit a focused brand built around origin, roast, preparation or convenience. However, the original article’s market estimates are dated, and Shopify’s 2026 list does not establish a current coffee-specific sales trend. Validate the intended audience and account for sourcing, packaging and repeat-purchase economics.

Toys
Toys can have seasonal peaks and may need to meet safety requirements for the markets where they are sold. Shopify’s current list does not single out toys as a leading category, so investigate a particular niche and look for demand beyond a short holiday window.

Eco products
“Eco” covers many kinds of goods, and the label alone does not prove either customer demand or a product’s environmental impact. Identify the specific problem the item solves and substantiate any environmental claims. The Shopify list does not establish a separate current ranking for eco products.

Home-office equipment
Furniture and equipment for working at home can be useful to a defined customer, but larger items can be expensive to ship and return. Shopify’s current list does not provide a specific home-office category signal. Compare the full cost of getting an item to the customer with the price they are willing to pay.

What newer product signals does Shopify report?
Shopify’s 2026 guide includes categories beyond the original twelve, including vitamins and supplements, motor vehicle parts, cycling, bedding, hats and accessories, and arts and crafting materials. Some of its reported figures illustrate why time period and source matter:
- Shopify says pet supplement sales grew 89% among its merchants; it does not establish that growth will continue or apply to other sales channels.
- Its merchants sold 70 million wheel parts in 2024, according to the guide.
- Its merchants sold more than 26 million bodysuits in 2024, according to the guide.
- Among US Shopify merchants, September 2025 year-over-year sales growth included creatine at 1,862%, satchel bags at 1,771%, and electric motorcycles and scooters at 1,730%. These are reported growth rates for that merchant group and period, not market-size figures or predictions.
These examples show activity in particular categories and time windows. They do not make the newer categories automatically better opportunities than the original twelve, nor do they show what a seller can earn.
How to judge whether a product is worth testing
A large or fast-growing category can still be a poor choice if selling costs absorb the revenue or customers have little reason to buy from you. Compare product ideas on the same practical criteria:
- Evidence and period: Is the signal based on sales, searches or another measure? Does it cover a sustained period or a short spike?
- Geography and channel: Does the evidence reflect your target country and the marketplace or store type you plan to use?
- Seasonality: Is demand steady throughout the year, tied to a season, or driven by a temporary event?
- Willingness to pay and costs: Can the expected selling price cover product sourcing, customer acquisition, shipping, returns and other operating costs?
- Competition and differentiation: What would give a customer a reason to choose your offer over similar products?
- Repeat purchases and constraints: Could customers buy again, and do regulation, product safety, storage or shipping requirements change the economics?
Before buying inventory, test whether the intended audience wants the product and at what price. The original article recommends researching trends and niches and asking the target audience; Shopify likewise advises checking whether a rise is sustained rather than treating a short-lived spike as durable demand.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
A category list is a starting point for choosing what to investigate, not a ranking of guaranteed winners. Shopify’s figures are specific to its merchants and stated periods; they do not show your likely sales, margins or customer-acquisition costs. Likewise, a product can have substantial demand and still be unprofitable for a particular seller. Make the decision at the level of the specific item, market and selling channel you intend to use.
