The best running shoe is the one that fits your foot and suits the routes and training you actually do—not a universal winner. For a useful starting point, this guide groups 12 current models by purpose, drawing on the 2026 testing guides from Outside, Runner’s World, and iRunFar. Their category picks reflect each publisher’s testing, not a shared ranking.
How to choose among the 2026 picks
Start with the surface, then narrow by the kind of run. Road shoes are designed for paved routes; trail shoes generally prioritize grip and protection on uneven ground. For routes that move between pavement and easier trails, choose a model specifically identified for road-to-trail use.
Next, consider whether you want a daily trainer, extra cushioning, a faster workout shoe, or a race shoe. Fit and comfort matter across every category: check that your toes have room, and try a prospective pair on a treadmill or outdoors if possible. A local running store can measure your feet. A shoe category alone cannot establish that a model will prevent injury or correct your gait.
Best road running shoes
These six choices are drawn from Outside’s July 2026 road guide and Runner’s World’s August 2026 guide. The labels below describe the publishers’ recommendations, not a universal ranking.

1. ASICS Superblast 3 — best overall daily trainer, Outside
Outside selected the Superblast 3 as its best overall road shoe for most runners, describing it as versatile, cushioned, and responsive. The trade-offs the guide notes are a loud footstrike and softness that may not suit everyone. Consider it for a range of ordinary training runs if its feel works for you.
2. Hoka Mach 7 — runner-up overall, Outside
Outside named the Mach 7 its runner-up overall. That makes it a reasonable alternative to try if you want a daily road shoe but the Superblast’s ride or fit is not right for you; compare comfort on your own foot rather than treating the runner-up label as a guarantee.
3. Skechers Aero Razor — best value, Outside
Outside’s best-value category pick is the Aero Razor. The source identifies its category but does not establish a specific price here, so check current listings and compare the exact version and size available before deciding it is the lower-cost choice.

Outside selected the Vomero Plus for runners seeking a cushioned road trainer. Cushioning preference is personal: try it alongside a less-soft option if you are unsure whether a more cushioned ride feels comfortable over your usual distances.

5. Adidas Adizero Evo SL — Runner’s World editors’ top pick
Runner’s World’s August 2026 guide identifies the Adizero Evo SL as its editors’ top pick. The preview does not specify the model’s intended use or detailed specifications, so use the pick as a shortlist candidate and confirm the full product details and fit before buying.
6. Brooks Ghost 18 or Brooks Glycerin 23 — fit-specific alternatives, Runner’s World
Runner’s World highlights the Ghost 18 for narrow feet and the Glycerin 23 for wide feet. These are useful models to try if width is a deciding factor; the labels are editorial recommendations, not a substitute for checking the actual shoe’s fit in your size.
Rank #3
- Men's stylish, slip-on sneakers
- SNUG FIT: Adjustable laces provide a secure fit
- FLEXIBLE UPPER: Soft textile upper is stretchy and comfortable
- CUSHIONED MIDSOLE: Cloudfoam midsole for step-in comfort and superior cushioning

Best shoes for speed, workouts, and racing
7. ASICS Magic Speed 5 — speed workouts, Outside
Outside recommends the Magic Speed 5 for speed workouts. It is a purpose-specific option to consider alongside a daily trainer if faster sessions are a regular part of your running.
8. Brooks Hyperion Max 4 — tempo runs, Outside
Outside’s tempo-run pick is the Hyperion Max 4. Its category placement makes it worth considering for sustained faster efforts, but a label does not tell you how its ride will feel at your pace; try it for comfort and fit.

Best shoes for trail and mixed terrain
iRunFar’s September 2026 guide covers trail models, while Outside identifies a road-to-trail category. These choices are not interchangeable: match the shoe to the ground you expect to encounter.
10. Nike ACG Pegasus Trail — road-to-trail, Outside
Outside names the ACG Pegasus Trail its road-to-trail pick. It is the clearest fit in this list for routes that combine pavement with trail sections, rather than assuming a road shoe will provide suitable traction on rougher ground.
11. Hoka Speedgoat 7 — cushioned trail running, iRunFar
iRunFar lists the Speedgoat 7 in its trail guide’s cushioning category. Consider it if cushioning is a priority on trail routes, while checking that the fit and grip suit the terrain you run.
Best Value
- Shoes with Cloudfoam midsole cushioning for comfort and support.
- Regular fit
- Laces
- Textile and synthetic upper
- Ortholite sockliner
12. Saucony Peregrine 16 — value trail option, iRunFar
iRunFar identifies the Peregrine 16 as its trail value pick. The category label alone does not establish a current price or guarantee it is the least expensive option in your market, so compare live prices for the same model and version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the testing labels do—and do not—tell you
The recommendations come from different publishers and test programs, so their category labels should not be read as a direct head-to-head ranking. Outside says its 2026 road guide drew on more than 100 tested shoes and 27 testers, who covered the latest models over thousands of miles. Runner’s World says its guide used more than 300 local wear-testers and that testers log at least 100 miles in every shoe. iRunFar says it tested more than 100 models for its trail guide with a 15-person test team, and its September update replaced models and confirmed current pricing and stock.
Those methods provide context for each publisher’s recommendations, but they do not prove that one model is best for every runner. Fit, comfort, ride, support, intended use, and current availability are still factors to verify for yourself.
Check fit and availability before buying
- Match the route: Choose a road, trail, or road-to-trail model based on the surfaces you run most.
- Check toe room and width: A model tagged for narrow or wide feet is a useful lead, not a guarantee of fit.
- Try the shoe if you can: Test it on a treadmill or outdoors, and consider getting your feet measured at a local running store.
- Verify the exact listing: Model versions, size stock, and prices can change. Confirm you are comparing the same version and size across sellers.
