Start by identifying what is being squeezed, then address the parts you can influence. If the pressure comes from excessive workload, unclear priorities, or little schedule control, personal habits alone may not solve it; those conditions call for a conversation about work design and support.
What work-life balance means in practice
Balance varies with a person’s responsibilities, preferences, and job. Some people prefer a clear line between work and home; others are comfortable blending them. The aim is an arrangement that leaves enough time and energy for nonwork life and recovery, while meeting the real requirements of the job.
In its 2024 U.S. Work in America survey, the American Psychological Association reported that 33% of respondents said they lacked enough workplace flexibility to balance professional and personal life. That is a survey finding, not an estimate for every worker or country. The APA also uses “work-life harmony” to describe a more individualized approach. (APA, June 18, 2024)
10 tips for a more sustainable work-life balance
1. Define what balance means for your current life
Take stock of what your week requires and what is missing. Consider caregiving, health needs, relationships, financial responsibilities, personal interests, and time to rest. Choose one or two changes that would make the biggest difference rather than measuring yourself against a colleague’s routine.

2. Agree on priorities and expectations
Ask your manager or team to clarify deadlines, ownership, and what can wait when priorities compete. Unclear roles and conflicting expectations are recognized work stressors, not simply failures of personal organization. (NIOSH, “STRESS…At Work”)
3. Set a realistic availability boundary
Decide when routine messages can wait and communicate that expectation. For example, you might agree that nonurgent evening email will be handled the next workday. Adapt the boundary to your role’s coverage, safety, or emergency requirements; a boundary works best when expectations are understood by the people who depend on you. APA notes that preferences about separating or blending work and home differ. (APA, June 18, 2024)
4. Raise workload concerns before they become a crisis
Be specific about the pressure point: for instance, a recurring clash between deadlines or a workload that cannot be completed within scheduled hours. Offer a practical next step, such as reprioritizing tasks, moving a deadline, clarifying what can be deferred, or discussing needed resources. NIOSH recommends addressing job stress through working conditions—including manageable workloads, clear roles, worker participation in decisions, communication, and schedules compatible with responsibilities outside work. Individual stress-management techniques cannot replace those changes.

5. Use schedule flexibility thoughtfully
If your job allows it, discuss a schedule or work location that fits both the work and your responsibilities at home. Consider what the change would solve and how you will protect time away from work. Flexibility is not automatically beneficial: working remotely or shifting hours can help one person and blur boundaries for another. Job duties and coverage needs may also limit the available options. (APA, June 18, 2024; CDC/NIOSH, 2022)
6. Take breaks during the workday
Make room for short pauses to rest, stretch, or connect with someone supportive. Breaks are one of CDC’s worker-focused suggestions for supporting mental health; when workload or staffing makes them difficult, that is also useful information to raise with a supervisor. (CDC, May 12, 2026)
7. Protect time for recovery outside work
Plan some time for enjoyable activities and habits that support sleep. Recovery does not need to be elaborate: a regular wind-down routine, time with people you care about, or an activity you look forward to can help create a clearer end to the workday. APA describes time to recharge as part of managing ongoing stress. (APA, “Coping with stress at work”)

8. Make room for movement or time outdoors
When feasible, include exercise or a relaxing stretch outdoors in your nonwork time. CDC lists both as possible ways workers can support their mental health. Treat them as helpful options, not as a substitute for changes to harmful working conditions or professional care when you need it. (CDC, May 12, 2026)
9. Build support and communicate
Tell a trusted coworker, manager, friend, or family member what is difficult and what kind of help would be useful. A conversation can uncover a shared solution, such as clearer coverage or a changed deadline, rather than leaving you to carry the strain alone. In APA’s 2024 article, University of Central Florida psychology professor Mindy Shoss emphasizes open, respectful, two-way communication and creative problem-solving. (APA, June 18, 2024)
10. Use workplace or professional support when needed
Ask what support your employer provides. Some workplaces offer an employee assistance program (EAP); availability and services depend on the employer. CDC identifies workplace mental-health supports, including EAP access, as part of supporting workers. If distress is persistent or severe, consider contacting a qualified health professional or another appropriate support service rather than relying on these tips alone. (CDC, May 12, 2026)

When the issue needs a workplace solution
Work-life strain is not always something an individual can resolve by becoming more organized or resilient. The World Health Organization identifies excessive workload, long or inflexible hours, low control, weak support, unclear roles, and conflicting work and home demands as psychosocial risks. Its guidance points to prevention through changes to work and workplace practices, alongside support for workers. (WHO, September 15, 2026)
The scale of workplace mental health concerns is broader than work-life balance alone. WHO estimates that 16% of working-age adults had a mental disorder in 2023; that is a global estimate for that year, not a measurement of work-life imbalance. WHO also estimates that depression and anxiety account for 12 billion working days lost globally each year and US$1 trillion in lost productivity. These figures describe depression and anxiety, not the cost of work-life imbalance. (WHO, September 15, 2026)
When speaking with a manager, describe the specific condition affecting you and propose a change that could be tested: clearer priorities, a revised deadline, a schedule adjustment, or a discussion about workload and resources. A workable outcome may require changes on both sides, and the available options depend on the job.
Quick Recap
How to choose which change to try first
- If your routine is the main pressure point: start with a boundary, break, or recovery habit you can sustain.
- If priorities or ownership are unclear: request a conversation about deadlines, responsibilities, and what can wait.
- If workload or hours are not manageable: raise the concrete constraint and discuss workload, staffing, schedule, or resources; coping strategies alone do not address the cause.
- If flexibility is available: weigh the benefit against possible boundary-blurring and the job’s coverage requirements.
- If distress persists or becomes severe: look into employer support, such as an EAP if offered, and appropriate professional care.
