1. Confirm which Crown Sport you are considering
Toyota introduced the SPORT Z 2.5-liter HEV in October 2023 and began selling the SPORT RS 2.5-liter PHEV in December 2023. They are not simply equipment variants of the same drivetrain: one is a conventional hybrid that does not need routine external charging, while the other can be charged from an external power source. Both use E-Four electric four-wheel drive. These specifications are for Japan and should not be assumed to apply to Crown models sold elsewhere. 2. Decide whether a plug-in fits your routine
SPORT Z HEV: simpler if you will not charge
The SPORT Z is the more straightforward choice if you want a hybrid but cannot reliably charge at home or work. Toyota’s Japan launch release lists fuel economy of 21.3 km/L under the WLTC test cycle. It is a manufacturer test figure, not a guarantee of everyday consumption; speed, weather, terrain, load and driving style affect actual results. SPORT RS PHEV: useful when charging is accessible
The SPORT RS adds an electric-only driving mode and more published system output, but its usefulness depends on having practical access to charging and using it regularly. Toyota lists 90 km of WLTC BEV-mode range and 20.3 km/L WLTC hybrid-mode fuel consumption. These are test-cycle figures, not predictions for every trip. 3. Compare output without treating it as the whole decision
Toyota lists the SPORT RS PHEV’s maximum system output as 225 kW (306 PS). The cited Japan launch material gives the SPORT Z’s fuel-economy figure but does not provide a comparable output figure in this buying information. Consider the PHEV’s additional published output alongside charging access, purchase cost and vehicle weight rather than treating output alone as a reason to choose it. 4. Understand the charging requirements and time
The SPORT RS supports standard and rapid charging. Toyota reports approximately 38 minutes to reach about 80% charge with a rapid charger rated at 50 kW or higher, under its stated test conditions. It is not a fixed charging time: battery and ambient temperature, remaining charge and charging equipment can change the result. 5. Factor in the original price gap carefully
Toyota’s original Japan launch prices were ¥5,900,000 for SPORT Z and ¥7,650,000 for SPORT RS. Toyota noted that other fees may apply and regional prices may differ. 7. Check whether the size and weight suit your use
Both grades are 4,720 mm long, 1,880 mm wide, have a 2,770 mm wheelbase and seat five. The 1,880 mm width is worth checking against a narrow garage, parking space or regular route before buying. Toyota’s 2024 specification table lists SPORT Z at 1,565 mm high and 1,810 kg, and SPORT RS at 1,570 mm high and 2,030 kg. The PHEV is therefore the heavier of the two by the listed figures. 8. Verify safety and assistance equipment on the specific car
Toyota stated at the Japan-market launch that “The latest Toyota Safety Sense is standard on the Sport.” The model information also describes Toyota Teammate and other assistance equipment. A launch statement does not establish that every used vehicle in every market has identical equipment, so verify the grade, options and equipment on the exact car and consult its owner’s manual. 9. Check the tire specification before ordering replacements
Toyota’s owner information lists 235/45R21 97W as the standard tire size, and the equipment table specifies 21-inch wheels. Before buying tires, compare the size and load and speed ratings with the placard on the actual vehicle and confirm its grade and market specification.
