The largest reported football contracts include Lionel Messi’s four-year Barcelona deal, listed at €620.1 million; Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr deal, listed at €493.1 million over two years; and Karim Benzema’s Al Ittihad deal, listed at €393.8 million over two years. These are reported totals, not audited disclosures, and the same source gives different totals or terms elsewhere in its coverage. A reliable, consistently documented top ten is not established by the available reporting.
What “biggest contract” means here
This comparison treats “football” as association football and ranks a deal by its reported total value over the stated term of a signed player-club playing contract. It does not rank annual salary, total projected earnings, endorsements, transfer fees, or unsigned proposals. The figures below are reported by AS in a 2025 comparison; they should not be read as official club disclosures or as directly comparable guaranteed cash.
Contract reporting often leaves important details unresolved: whether bonuses are conditional, whether commercial or image-rights income is included, and how the term or currency conversion was calculated. AS itself presents different totals or durations for these three deals in its comparison and accompanying discussion, so each entry is identified as a particular reported presentation rather than a settled value.
Three of the largest reported contract values
| Player and club | Reported total and term | What is established—and what is not |
|---|---|---|
| Lionel Messi, Barcelona | €620.1 million over four years, 2017–21 (AS comparison, 2025) | AS’s accompanying discussion cites El Mundo’s €555 million report and describes up to €138 million per season in fixed and variable components, a €115 million renewal bonus, and almost €78 million under a loyalty clause. These are conflicting reported presentations, not an official contract document; the €620.1 million comparison figure should not be combined with the separate components as though they were a verified breakdown. |
| Cristiano Ronaldo, Al Nassr | €493.1 million over two years (AS comparison, 2025) | In its discussion, AS instead describes €500 million over two-and-a-half years through summer 2025 and mentions non-cash privileges. The two-year and two-and-a-half-year presentations are not the same calculation, and the source does not establish a reconciled value or a guaranteed-cash breakdown. |
| Karim Benzema, Al Ittihad | €393.8 million over two years (AS comparison, 2025) | AS’s accompanying text refers instead to nearly €300 million over three seasons. The discrepancy in reported total and term is unresolved; the source does not provide a consistent breakdown of guaranteed pay, bonuses, or commercial elements. |
Source for all three comparison entries and the conflicting presentations: AS, “De Haaland a Jordan, una historia con muchos ceros” (2025). The figures are reported values, not independently audited contract terms.

Why this is not a defensible top ten
The evidence does not establish ten signed player-club contracts with comparable reported totals and terms. Exact football contract terms are often private, and published figures may combine salary with bonuses, commercial arrangements, or other benefits. Secondary compilations—including Footgoal.co’s “The 10 Highest-Paid Footballers of All Time, Ranked by Actual Contract Value” and the “List of largest sports contracts”—also acknowledge uncertainty and variation in reporting. They do not make an inconsistent set of figures equivalent to a verified ranking.
For that reason, this article names the three examples for which the cited 2025 comparison supplies a total and term, rather than filling seven more places with annual salary estimates or earnings projections. The order above reflects AS’s reported totals only; differing terms and unresolved inclusions mean it is not a ranking of confirmed guaranteed compensation.

Why annual earnings figures do not answer the contract question
Forbes España’s 2025 estimate projects Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2025–26 earnings at $280 million: $230 million on-field and $50 million off-field. Forbes says its on-field estimate is believed to include club-facilitated commercial incentives as well as player salary. It is an annual earnings estimate, not the value of Ronaldo’s Al Nassr playing contract, so it cannot be substituted for a contract total or used to rank signed deals.

Real Madrid’s official “Cuentas Anuales y Auditoría” page links audited 2024–25 club financial reporting. Those accounts provide club-level financial information, but the reviewed page does not disclose the individual contract figures discussed here. Audited club accounts therefore should not be cited as validation of a particular player’s reported pay unless they actually disclose that figure.
