What the current figures do show is which used pickups combine relatively low asking prices with favorable expected remaining life. Those are useful shopping clues—not estimates of repair bills or scheduled service costs. The rankings below separate five-year-old and ten-year-old trucks so you can compare like with like.
What these truck rankings do—and do not—measure
iSeeCars’s 2026 value rankings compare average listing prices with estimated remaining lifespan, expressed as a price per remaining year. Its reliability ratings draw on an analysis of more than 312 million vehicles and describe useful lifespan and the likelihood of reaching 200,000 miles. Neither measure tells you what an individual truck will cost to maintain or repair.
For the figures below, “five-year-old” and “ten-year-old” refer to the age cohorts in iSeeCars’s used-truck comparisons, not a promise about the model year of a particular listing today. Prices are averages from that study, not guaranteed sale prices or a universal definition of cheap. A truck’s condition, records, location, mileage, and configuration can change its real cost substantially.
For a broader overview of its methodology and vehicle value rankings, see iSeeCars’s 2026 used-car value study; the specific truck cohort figures are from its 2026 used-truck rankings.

Six five-year-old used trucks with favorable price-per-year figures
In this cohort, iSeeCars reports a $31,535 average list price, 8.1 expected remaining years, and $3,887 in price per remaining year across the trucks it compared. Each of the six models below has a lower price-per-remaining-year figure than that cohort average. That is a value comparison, not a claim that any model has below-average maintenance bills.
| Truck | Average list price | Expected remaining years | Price per remaining year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ford Ranger | $26,299 | 10.1 | $2,607 |
| Chevrolet Colorado | $23,373 | 8.9 | $2,631 |
| Nissan Frontier | $23,265 | 8.5 | $2,729 |
| Toyota Tacoma | $31,625 | 11.6 | $2,734 |
| GMC Canyon | $27,223 | 9.9 | $2,758 |
| Honda Ridgeline | $27,506 | 9.3 | $2,971 |
Source for all figures in this table: iSeeCars, 2026, Most Reliable Used Trucks Under $30k. The Tacoma’s average listing price is above $30,000, despite appearing in a ranking titled “under $30k”; use the listed average rather than assuming it fits a strict $30,000 ceiling.
Ford Ranger
The Ranger leads this five-year-old cohort on price per expected remaining year: $2,607, based on a $26,299 average list price and 10.1 expected remaining years. That makes it the strongest value indicator among these six in this particular age group, not proof that every Ranger is inexpensive to service.

Chevrolet Colorado
The Colorado’s $23,373 average list price and 8.9 expected remaining years work out to $2,631 per remaining year in the ranking. For 2020–2022 Colorados, Cars.com reported median used prices of $23,500–$28,000 and EPA combined fuel economy of 17–23 mpg; actual price and fuel economy vary with configuration. Cars.com also says a diesel Colorado can tow up to 7,700 pounds, but confirm the model year and equipment before relying on that capacity. See Cars.com’s used-pickup guide.
Nissan Frontier
In the five-year-old group, the Frontier averages $23,265, with 8.5 expected remaining years and $2,729 per remaining year. It also ranks first among the ten-year-old trucks below, so it is the one model in this article with a leading position in both cited age cohorts—though the two rankings use different groups of vehicles.
Toyota Tacoma
The Tacoma has the longest expected remaining lifespan in this five-year-old table at 11.6 years. Its average list price, $31,625, is also the highest among the six. It may suit a buyer who prioritizes longevity over a strict under-$30,000 budget, but its lifespan score does not establish lower repair spending.

GMC Canyon
The Canyon’s five-year-old-cohort figures are $27,223 average list price, 9.9 expected remaining years, and $2,758 per remaining year. Compare it with the mechanically related Colorado on the exact vehicle’s price, equipment, history, and condition rather than treating the shared value metric as a maintenance comparison.
Honda Ridgeline
The Ridgeline posts $2,971 per expected remaining year, from a $27,506 average list price and 9.3 expected remaining years. It is the highest figure among these six but remains below the five-year-old cohort average of $3,887.

Four ten-year-old used trucks with favorable value figures
The ten-year-old cohort is cheaper on average, but older vehicles make inspection and maintenance documentation especially important. iSeeCars reports a cohort average of $19,428 in list price, 6.4 expected remaining years, and $3,039 per remaining year.

Nissan Frontier
The Frontier leads the ten-year-old group at $2,174 per remaining year. Its $14,688 average list price is the lowest of the four, while its expected remaining life is 6.8 years. A lower purchase price can leave room in a budget for repairs, but it cannot tell you whether a specific truck needs them.
GMC Canyon
The ten-year-old Canyon averages $18,275, with 7.9 expected remaining years and $2,305 per remaining year. Its expected lifespan is the longest in this four-truck group, while the Frontier has the lower price-per-year figure.

Chevrolet Colorado
The Colorado’s ten-year-old figures are $17,176 average list price, 7.4 remaining years, and $2,330 per remaining year. Treat this cohort figure separately from Cars.com’s 2020–2022 price and fuel-economy data: the age groups and sources are not interchangeable.
Toyota Tacoma
The Tacoma averages $21,441 in this older cohort and has 9.2 expected remaining years, the longest estimate in the table. Its $2,338 per remaining year is slightly above the Canyon and Colorado figures, illustrating why lifespan, asking price, and price-per-year can point to different trade-offs.

Use the rankings to shortlist trucks, then evaluate the actual vehicle. Edmunds contributor Josh Jacquot noted in 2025 that “for $25,000 or less, you can find excellent options in the used market that balance performance, features, utility and durability.” A good balance still depends on the truck’s service history and the work you need it to do.
- Set a realistic purchase budget. Decide whether your ceiling includes taxes, registration, inspection, and immediate maintenance. Do not assume a truck fits a $30,000 budget because it appears in a ranking with “under $30k” in the title; the Tacoma’s five-year-old average here is $31,625.
- Compare vehicles in the same age cohort. The five-year-old ranking favors the Ranger by price per expected remaining year; the ten-year-old ranking favors the Frontier. Those are different cohorts, not a single overall ordering.
- Ask for documented service records. Look for dated invoices and evidence of routine work, not just a seller’s verbal assurance. Missing records increase uncertainty about deferred services and repairs.
- Match capability to your use. Check the exact model year, engine, drivetrain, and equipment against your towing or hauling needs. A capability figure attached to one configuration should not be assumed for every truck wearing the same name.
- Get an independent pre-purchase inspection. Have a qualified mechanic assess the truck’s condition and likely near-term work. An OBD-II scanner can read some fault codes, but code reading is limited and is not a substitute for an inspection.
- Check local service economics. Ask shops about parts availability, labor rates, and the service schedule for the exact year and configuration. Those details, along with the vehicle’s condition, are more relevant to your maintenance budget than a price-per-lifespan figure.
Why “maintenance cost” needs a different comparison
A true maintenance-cost ranking would need comparable, model-year-specific scheduled-service and repair expense data for all ten candidates. The available iSeeCars figures estimate price relative to expected lifespan; Cars.com’s Colorado information covers used prices, fuel economy, and a towing configuration. None supplies a ten-truck comparison of maintenance bills. For reliability context beyond the value ranking, see iSeeCars’s 2026 midsize-truck reliability ranking, keeping reliability distinct from expense.
