Why Del Monte’s Rubyglow Pineapple Once Cost Nearly $400

Fresh Del Monte reported a Rubyglow price near $400 in 2024–25. Here’s what that figure covered, why the fruit was positioned as a luxury item, and what is—and isn’t—known about availability now.

Fresh Del Monte reported a U.S. retail price of $395.99 for its Rubyglow pineapple in 2024, and listed a $395 retail price in a 2025 trade-show announcement. Those are dated launch-era figures—not a verified price today. Rubyglow is a limited, red-skinned pineapple positioned as a luxury fruit; its high price reflects the company’s development and scarcity claims, not evidence that it offers $400 worth of extra flavor.

What is Rubyglow?

Rubyglow is a Fresh Del Monte pineapple with a red outer shell and yellow flesh. The company says it developed the fruit in Costa Rica through traditional crossbreeding of a traditional pineapple with Morada, a deep-red-skinned variety that is typically inedible. The stated method is crossbreeding, not genetic engineering. Fresh Del Monte’s product page describes the fruit and its markets.

What does it cost—and where did the nearly $400 figure come from?

The best-supported figures are historical and come from Fresh Del Monte: $395.99 in the United States in 2024, and $395 as a retail price in the company’s 2025 trade-show announcement. In May 2024, the company identified Melissa’s Produce in California as a seller. That report does not establish that the retailer—or any retailer—has Rubyglow in stock now. Fresh Del Monte’s May 2024 account and its later 2025 trade-show announcement provide the respective context.

$395 Retail price stated by Fresh Del Monte in its 2025 trade-show announcement; the announcement does not establish a current universal price. Fresh Del Monte, 2025

Fresh Del Monte’s current product page says consumers can purchase Rubyglow in China, North America, and Europe “when available.” It does not provide a live inventory, current price, seller, or delivery date. Why was it priced as a luxury fruit?

Fresh Del Monte said Rubyglow took more than 15 years to develop and that each fruit takes two years to grow. Its January 2024 launch announcement projected about 5,000 fruits worldwide for 2024 and 3,000 for 2025. These are the company’s historical availability projections—not audited sales figures or a current supply count. The January 2024 announcement gives the original launch details.

The company described Rubyglow as an exclusive luxury fruit. Its senior vice president for research and development and chief sustainability officer, Hans Sauter, told Produce Processing: “There is a tradition out there for luxury fruits, not just meats or fish, but fruit — very much so in Asia, and Western markets are demonstrating that there is the appetite for such products,” as quoted in Fresh Del Monte’s December 2024 article. That explains the company’s positioning; it is not an independent valuation of the fruit.

How does Rubyglow taste?

Fresh Del Monte describes the yellow flesh as sweet, with a smooth tropical flavor and low acidity, and says its taste resembles Del Monte Gold Extra Sweet. These are the company’s descriptions; the available sources do not provide independent tasting results or a controlled comparison. The product page includes the company’s flavor description.

When and where did Rubyglow launch?

Fresh Del Monte announced Rubyglow on January 24, 2024, with an initial launch in China. The company later said the North American launch took place in May 2024 and anticipated a European launch in early 2025. Its 2026 annual filing says the European launch expanded in early 2025. The company’s present product page lists China, North America, and Europe as markets where the fruit may be purchased “when available,” which does not guarantee current stock. Is nearly $400 a sensible price to pay?

That depends on what the buyer values. Rubyglow’s price was attached to a rare, visually distinctive fruit with a long development and growing timeline, according to Fresh Del Monte. The evidence does not establish a current price, continuing scarcity level, independent taste advantage, or a measurable value premium over an ordinary pineapple. A buyer considering one today would need to confirm the seller, price, shipping conditions, and actual availability directly; the old $395.99 figure is not a reliable quote for a current purchase.
