Southwest Airlines has the largest reported Boeing 737 MAX 8 fleet, while United Airlines leads the separate MAX 9 ranking. Counts vary by source and snapshot date, and the available figures do not establish a single, comparable ranking of every MAX variant combined.

Which airlines have the most 737 MAX 8s?

FlightQ’s directory, checked August 24, 2026, lists these five airlines as having the most MAX 8 aircraft in service:

Rank Airline MAX 8 aircraft in service Source and snapshot
1 Southwest Airlines 323 FlightQ, checked August 24, 2026
2 Ryanair 210 FlightQ, checked August 24, 2026
3 United Airlines 123 FlightQ, checked August 24, 2026
4 American Airlines 103 FlightQ, checked August 24, 2026
5 WestJet 70 FlightQ, checked August 24, 2026

Southwest’s own 2025 Form 10-K reports 300 Boeing 737-8 aircraft at year-end 2025. A separate January 2026 analysis based on REDBOOK Fleet+ also reports 300 Southwest MAX 8s and identifies the airline as the largest operator of that variant. Those figures are lower than FlightQ’s later count of 323; they should be treated as different dated snapshots, not combined into a single fleet total. Southwest’s 2025 Form 10-K and the January 2026 REDBOOK-based analysis document the earlier figures.

American’s April 2026 fleet fact sheet gives a third useful dated checkpoint: 98 MAX 8s at the end of the first quarter, with 14 MAX 8 deliveries expected during 2026. FlightQ’s later directory lists 103. The sources use different dates and may use different fleet-status definitions, so the difference alone does not establish how many aircraft were added in that interval. Which airlines have the most 737 MAX 9s?

FlightQ’s separate MAX 9 directory, checked August 24, 2026, lists 330 aircraft across 10 carriers. United leads, followed by Alaska Airlines:

Rank Airline MAX 9 aircraft in service Source and snapshot
1 United Airlines 167 FlightQ, checked August 24, 2026
2 Alaska Airlines 80 FlightQ, checked August 24, 2026

This is a MAX 9 ranking, not a ranking of each airline’s full MAX fleet. The available directory figures do not give a harmonized table for all operators and variants, so the two variant lists should not be added together to produce an all-family leaderboard.

Why there is no definitive all-variant ranking here

The 737 MAX is a family, not one aircraft type. Boeing lists the 737-7, 737-8, 737-9 and 737-10. Its published two-class capacities are 135–160, 160–180, 175–195 and 185–210 seats, respectively; maximum seats are 172, 210, 220 and 230. Listed ranges are up to 3,800, 3,500, 3,300 and 3,100 nautical miles, respectively. These are manufacturer specifications, not the cabin configurations or operating ranges of any particular airline. A fair family-wide comparison would need one consistent source and rules for:

“Fly the most” can also mean aircraft in a fleet or aircraft assigned to flights. The published figures above describe fleet counts; they do not show how many aircraft operate on a particular day or route. Deployment changes with schedules, and fleet ownership alone does not establish where an aircraft flies.
