The C-390 Millennium and C-130J Super Hercules can both move cargo and people, deliver supplies by airdrop, and support medical missions. Their central difference is in how they do it: the C-390 is a twin-engine turbofan aircraft, while the C-130J-30 is a four-engine turboprop. That affects the way their speed, payload, range, cargo systems, and runway claims should be compared—but it does not establish an across-the-board winner.

The figures below come from Embraer, Lockheed Martin, and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). They describe different variants and use different conditions, so a meaningful choice depends on the actual load, route, airfield, and aircraft configuration.

What is the basic difference between the C-390 and C-130J?

The C-390 Millennium—also called the KC-390 in Embraer materials—is a jet-powered tactical transport. Embraer’s brochure specifies two IAE V2500-E5 turbofan engines. The C-130J-30 is the stretched version of Lockheed Martin’s turboprop transport family; RAAF specifications list four Rolls-Royce AE2100D3 turboprop engines.

That propulsion contrast is the clearest shorthand for the aircraft, but it is not a complete mission comparison. Neither engine type alone establishes operating cost, suitability for a particular runway, or how much cargo an aircraft can deliver over a particular distance. Those depend on the aircraft configuration and mission conditions.

How do their speed, payload, and range figures compare?

The manufacturers and RAAF publish figures under different definitions and conditions. The table keeps each value tied to its source rather than treating all maximums as directly comparable.

Measure C-390 Millennium / KC-390 C-130J-30
Maximum cruise speed 470 KTAS / Mach 0.80, according to Embraer’s brochure. 643 km/h, according to the RAAF. Lockheed Martin separately lists 410 mph / 356 KTAS at 22,000 feet for the C-130J-30.
Maximum payload 26 metric tons concentrated; 23 metric tons distributed, according to Embraer’s brochure. 19,500 kg, according to the RAAF. Lockheed Martin lists a maximum allowable payload of 44,000 lb for the C-130J-30.
Range with a named payload 1,080 nautical miles with 26 metric tons, or 1,470 nautical miles with 23 metric tons, according to Embraer’s brochure. 2,390 nautical miles with 40,000 lb of payload, according to Lockheed Martin.
Range without payload or in ferry configuration 3,370 nautical miles ferry range, according to Embraer’s brochure. 6,852 km with no payload, according to the RAAF.

Which aircraft is faster?

Embraer’s brochure gives the C-390 a maximum cruise speed of 470 KTAS or Mach 0.80. RAAF lists a C-130J-30 cruise speed of 643 km/h, while Lockheed Martin gives a separate C-130J-30 figure of 356 KTAS at 22,000 feet. These are published specifications, not results from one standardized head-to-head test; the source definitions and conditions are not identical. They support comparing the stated cruise figures, not a claim about total mission time, which also depends on routing, loading, and ground operations.

Which carries more?

There is no single apples-to-apples answer from the headline payload numbers. Embraer distinguishes a C-390 maximum concentrated load of 26 metric tons from a maximum distributed load of 23 metric tons. RAAF lists 19,500 kg for the C-130J-30; Lockheed Martin gives that variant a maximum allowable payload of 44,000 lb. A maximum allowable payload and a stated concentrated or distributed load may not describe the same loading case.

Which has greater range?

Compare range only when the load and configuration are specified. Embraer gives C-390 ranges at two named payloads, while Lockheed Martin gives a C-130J-30 range with 40,000 lb aboard. The RAAF’s 6,852 km figure is explicitly for the C-130J-30 with no payload; Embraer’s 3,370 nautical miles is a ferry-range figure. Those unloaded or ferry figures should not be set against a loaded-range figure as if they represented the same mission.

How do their cargo systems and mission configurations differ?

The C-390’s Cargo Handling and Aerial Delivery System (CHADS) supports vehicles, 463L pallets, Type V platforms, and Container Delivery System (CDS) bundles, including automatic airdrop functions. Embraer’s product page lists capacity for up to seven 463L pallets, 24 CDS bundles, or one helicopter the size of a Black Hawk, as well as medical configurations for up to 80 litters.

For the C-130J-30, Lockheed Martin lists up to eight pallets or alternative troop, litter, and CDS configurations. RAAF lists capacity for up to 124 passengers or eight pallets. These examples are not interchangeable load plans: the aircraft have different cargo systems and layouts, and a count of pallets or litters does not by itself establish whether a particular vehicle or load will fit.

For a procurement or deployment decision, compare the dimensions and weight of the actual cargo, its restraint and loading requirements, and the aircraft’s load plan. The published examples establish broad capability, not compatibility with every vehicle or mission package.

Can both aircraft operate from austere or unpaved runways?

Both are presented as tactical aircraft with capability for challenging airfields. Embraer says the KC-390 is designed to use semi-prepared or damaged runways. RAAF says the C-130J-30 can deliver cargo to short, unsurfaced runways, and Lockheed Martin emphasizes short-field performance.

Those descriptions do not prove equal performance at every airfield. A runway’s surface and length, aircraft weight, weather, approach conditions, and the specific variant all matter. Evaluate a named airfield and mission rather than inferring a universal operating limit from a general manufacturer or service description.

What missions and variants should buyers distinguish?

Both aircraft support transport, airdrop, and medical missions. RAAF also describes the C-130J-30 in search and survivor-assistance roles; Lockheed Martin notes additional specialized roles across the broader C-130 family. Embraer describes the C-390/KC-390 for transport, airdrop, medical evacuation, search and rescue, and other tasks.

“KC-390” is used for the air-to-air refueling configuration. Do not assume that tanker functions apply to every C-390 aircraft or configuration. Similarly, a C-130J family capability should not automatically be attributed to every C-130J variant: the payload and range figures in this comparison that specifically identify the C-130J-30 apply to the stretched model.

What do fleet history and support evidence establish?

The C-130J is part of a longer-running aircraft family with multiple specialized variants; the C-390 is a newer program. Embraer reported in 2025 that the C-390 had been selected by 11 air forces and cited a mission-completion rate above 99%. Those are manufacturer-reported figures, not an independent comparison of fleet size, availability, or lifecycle cost. They should not be treated as proof that either aircraft will be easier or cheaper to support for a particular operator.

  • Molded in light gray and clear. Paint and glue not included.

A buyer assessing fleet maturity should examine evidence relevant to the intended operator: aircraft already in service, local maintenance and training arrangements, parts availability, mission-system requirements, and support commitments. The cited specifications do not provide comparable lifecycle-cost data, so they cannot establish which aircraft costs less to own or operate.

How should an operator choose between them?

Start with the mission rather than a single headline statistic. A useful comparison asks:

  • What must be carried? Specify cargo dimensions, weight, distribution, restraint method, and whether the load is a vehicle, palletized freight, passengers, or medical equipment.
  • How far must it travel while loaded? Compare range at the expected payload, not maximum payload against ferry range.
  • Where must it land? Assess the actual runway, surface, length, weather, and operating conditions for the relevant variant and load.
  • Which mission equipment is needed? Confirm airdrop, medical, tanker, or other systems are present in the proposed aircraft configuration.
  • What support can the operator sustain? Evaluate training, maintenance, parts, and lifecycle cost using operator-specific evidence rather than general performance claims.

The published numbers are useful for screening, but a final decision needs mission-specific load plans and performance assumptions. Neither the C-390’s higher stated maximum cruise speed nor a C-130J-30 range figure on a different payload basis settles that decision on its own.
