First identify the app or protocol—such as NEAR Intents or Ref Finance—and save the exact error message plus any transaction or intent identifier. A signature or wallet prompt by itself does not prove that a swap completed.
Start by identifying the service and the stage
Do not assume every NEAR swap follows the same process. In the documented NEAR Intents flow, a user requests a quote, signs, publishes an intent, and checks its status. Ref Finance’s SDK uses its own transaction parameters and account prerequisites. The service determines which checks apply.
- Record the name of the wallet, app, or protocol you used.
- Note whether you received a quote, signed a request, submitted a transaction, or saw a status update.
- Copy the exact error and keep any transaction hash or intent hash. Do not share a seed phrase or private key.
For the Intents procedure, see NEAR’s “Swap tokens” tutorial. Ref Finance’s SDK-specific requirements are documented in its ref-sdk repository.
If NEAR Intents did not return a quote
Check that the quote request used the intended input and output asset identifiers. A quote includes amounts, a quote hash, and an expiration time, so an expired quote should not be treated as a current offer. The tutorial says to try again if no quote appears: solvers may not have provided quote information within the 1200 ms quote window. A missing quote alone does not establish that the wallet failed.

If the input token or balance looks wrong
For NEAR Intents, distinguish the balance in your wallet or on another chain from the balance credited to the Intents system. The official “Deposit tokens” guide explains how to find an asset’s defuse_asset_id in the token list and query mt_batch_balance_of on intents.near. A zero result means the queried Intents balance is empty.
- Verify the exact input asset identifier for the asset you intend to swap.
- Query that identifier’s balance in the relevant service, rather than relying only on the balance shown for an external wallet or chain.
- If depositing from NEAR, follow the guide’s fungible-token transfer-call deposit path, then check the Intents balance again.
If signing or first-use setup fails in NEAR Intents
The documented Intents signing example checks whether your public key is registered with intents.near and calls add_public_key if it is not. This is a first-use step in that documented Intents flow, not a universal prerequisite for all NEAR swaps. Sign only through the wallet flow you intended to use; never give anyone your seed phrase or private key.

If you used Ref Finance
Apply this branch only if Ref Finance was the service. Its SDK documentation says the account needs active storage for the input-token contract; without it, the transaction can fail. Check that the account has active storage for that token and that the input-token balance is sufficient. The SDK also exposes slippage tolerance as a parameter. It does not establish one setting as right for every swap, so do not increase tolerance blindly.
If you submitted the swap but the outcome is unclear
Check the NEAR Intents status
If the Intents flow returned an intent_hash, use it with get_status as described in the swap tutorial. The tutorial identifies SETTLED as successful completion; inspect any associated transaction hash provided. A wallet signature alone is not a settled status.

Check a foreign-chain deposit separately
If the swap input came from a foreign-chain deposit, first determine whether that deposit reached the relevant service. NEAR’s FAQs describe deposit statuses including PENDING, FAILED, and COMPLETED. The FAQ says failed deposits are currently handled manually and eventually updated to completed. That deposit lifecycle is separate from checking the subsequent swap’s Intents status.
Why signing is not the same as execution
A signature indicates authorization, not necessarily successful transmission or completion. NEAR’s documentation about Shade Agent key components notes that a successful MPC signature does not guarantee transaction success or transmission, and lists congestion, an incorrect nonce, and insufficient gas as possible causes in that agent context. Those examples are not evidence that these are common causes of an end-user token swap failure; they are a reminder to check the relevant service’s transaction or intent status rather than infer success from signing alone.
