Centralized vs. Decentralized Exchanges: Custody, Fees, and Trade-Offs

CEXs hold assets in platform-managed accounts; DEXs can enable swaps from self-custody wallets. Compare control, live trade costs, execution and risks before choosing.

A centralized exchange (CEX) holds assets in an account it manages and processes trades as an intermediary. A decentralized exchange (DEX) can let you trade directly from a self-custody wallet using smart contracts. The key difference is who controls your assets and handles recovery—not a guarantee that one option is cheaper or safer. Compare the specific platform, wallet, network, and trade before choosing.

How centralized and decentralized exchanges work

Centralized exchanges

A CEX is an intermediary: you use an account on its platform, and it manages the assets held there. Many centralized exchanges use order-book arrangements, but the exchange’s actual trading and custody terms depend on the provider. You rely on the platform to operate your account and process withdrawals.

Decentralized exchanges

A DEX can let you trade from a self-custody wallet, where you control the private keys and authorize transactions. In Uniswap’s description, a DEX is a peer-to-peer platform enabled by smart contracts that lets users trade from their own wallets. Uniswap’s protocol is one example: its smart contracts facilitate swaps against liquidity pools using an automated market maker (AMM), rather than a traditional order book. Not every DEX necessarily uses that design. See Uniswap Labs’ DEX explainer and Uniswap Support’s protocol overview.

Compare the practical trade-offs

What to compare Centralized exchange Decentralized exchange What to check
Custody The platform manages assets held in your exchange account. You may retain control through a self-custody wallet and sign transactions yourself. Who controls the keys, how account or wallet access is recovered, and what happens if access is lost. Coinbase explains the distinction in its guide to exchanges and self-custody wallets.
Trade execution A centralized intermediary handles trades; order books are common in this type of comparison. Smart contracts can execute swaps against liquidity pools, as in Uniswap’s AMM model. How the venue executes trades and whether the desired pair has enough liquidity for your trade size.
Cost There is no universal CEX fee schedule established here. Network gas applies to onchain use; an interface may also charge a separate service fee. Execution price and slippage can affect the result. Review the live quote, explicit fees, gas, spread or price impact, and slippage settings for the specific trade.
Asset access The platform selects which assets it makes tradable. An interface may expose a broader range of tokens, but availability does not mean an asset has been vetted. Confirm the token and network, and independently verify that the token contract is the intended one.
Responsibility and risk You rely on the provider’s custody, operation, and withdrawal terms. You manage wallet access and transaction authorization, while also relying on software, smart contracts, and network operation. Choose the set of responsibilities and failure modes you understand and can manage.

Which exchange type is cheaper?

There is no reliable one-number answer. CEX fees vary by platform and account or trade conditions; DEX costs can include network gas, a service fee, and the effect of liquidity and execution price. A low stated fee does not necessarily mean a lower total cost if the quoted price is less favorable or the trade moves the market.

Check the transaction preview for the actual network, token pair, trade size, and service. Compare all explicit charges with the expected execution price and any price impact or slippage. Also account for any costs of moving assets to or from the venue. Coinbase’s help page for its own DEX trading flow says that the flow may include both a standard Coinbase fee and a separate DEX service fee; it also describes estimated pricing based on current liquidity and a displayed slippage tolerance. Those details apply to that product flow, not every DEX, and fees and regional availability can change. See Coinbase Help’s DEX trading introduction.

What you need to use a DEX

  1. A compatible self-custody wallet: The DEX flow described here requires a wallet from which you can authorize transactions. You control its private keys; recovery depends on how you have secured the wallet’s access information. Coinbase’s wallet and exchange explanation distinguishes this from platform custody.
  2. The right network and assets: Check that the interface supports the network and that you hold the required assets, including the network’s native currency if needed for gas.
  3. A careful review before signing: Read the transaction details, expected output, fees, and slippage tolerance. Signing authorizes an onchain transaction; it is not the same as asking a platform to reverse an account trade.

A hardware wallet is optional, not a requirement for the DEX model described here. The essential distinction is self-custody and transaction signing; no wallet device removes smart-contract, network, or transaction-choice risks.

Risks to weigh before choosing

Custodial-platform risk

With a CEX, the platform manages account assets, so you depend on its operations and withdrawal conditions. Provider circumstances can affect access. Ethereum.org discusses custodial-provider trust in the narrower context of delegated staking; that example illustrates a custody consideration but is not a complete account of every exchange service. See Ethereum.org’s delegated staking overview.

Self-custody and onchain risk

With a DEX, direct control means you are responsible for wallet access and transaction authorization. A mistaken transaction, smart-contract issue, or network problem can affect a trade; self-custody does not guarantee recovery or eliminate protocol risk.

Token and interface risk

A token appearing in a DEX interface does not establish that it is legitimate or safe. Coinbase cautions that assets accessed through its described DEX product have not passed its asset-listing process. That warning is product-specific, but the broader practical lesson is to verify the asset independently rather than treating availability as vetting.

How to decide

  • Consider a CEX if you prefer an account managed by a provider and are prepared to rely on its custody, trading, and withdrawal terms.
  • Consider a DEX if you want to trade from a self-custody wallet and are comfortable managing keys, signing transactions, reviewing quotes, and accepting onchain execution risks.
  • For either option, evaluate the specific venue, supported assets, execution method, live total cost, and the consequences of losing access or encountering a failed transaction. Neither category is risk-free.
