You can swap tokens on NEAR through a wallet-connected decentralized exchange when both assets are available on NEAR, or use NEAR Intents for a supported cross-chain route. Neither option requires depositing funds with a centralized exchange, but both involve wallet signatures and route-specific risks. Check the live asset support, network, quote, fees and execution terms before signing.
Choose the route that matches where your tokens are

For a starting point when choosing a wallet, see the NEAR wallet directory. The site describes itself as a gateway to the broader wallet ecosystem, not the former web wallet. Ref Finance appears among NEAR ecosystem swap options, but the exact interface, pair support and route details can change; use its live interface and verify the terms rather than relying on an old guide.
How do I swap tokens on NEAR?
If both assets are already on NEAR
- Choose a current NEAR-compatible wallet and a DEX interface that lists both exact assets.
- Connect the wallet through the interface. Check the token name, contract or other identifier, and network; a ticker or familiar name alone may not identify the asset you mean.
- Select the asset to sell and the asset to receive. Enter the amount and inspect the live quote, expected output, fees, network costs, and any slippage or execution conditions shown.
- Review the transaction details in the wallet, then sign only if they match the swap you intend to make.
- After submission, check the wallet or interface for the result and confirm that the received asset is the expected token.
Pair availability and interface steps are live facts. If the pair is not listed or the quote does not make sense, do not approve a substitute token or an unfamiliar route just to complete the trade.
If the route uses NEAR Intents
NEAR’s documented Intents process is to request a quote, inspect it, sign the intent message with the NEAR account key, and publish the signed intent. The NEAR swap tutorial describes quote requests for an exact input or an exact output. If you are using a consumer interface, follow its current prompts; do not copy code examples, demonstration signatures, or sample transaction data into a real swap.

- Choose the input and output assets in the current interface and request a quote.
- Verify both assets, the amount, the relevant chain or chains, the quoted output, fees, and any expiry or execution conditions displayed.
- Review the wallet signing request. Sign only if its details match the route and trade you expect.
- Publish or submit the signed intent as the interface instructs, then monitor the transaction until the interface or wallet reports the outcome.
The documentation’s identifiers such as nep141:wrap.near and nep141:eth.omft.near are examples, not proof those assets or a route between them are currently available.
How to handle a cross-chain deposit
A cross-chain swap can require a deposit or bridge step before the swap itself. NEAR’s deposit tutorial says the asset must be supported and describes Omni-Bridge for external-chain deposits and withdrawals for supported assets. The Intents Bridge documentation also describes a PoA Bridge alternative for some assets. These routes are not interchangeable for every token or chain.

- Check that the exact asset and source chain are supported by the current service and route.
- Generate a deposit address for your own account, the correct asset, and the correct source chain. Do not use an address copied from documentation or another person.
- Confirm the destination and token details in your sending wallet before transferring. Unsupported assets or wrong-chain transfers may not be recoverable.
- Wait until the deposit is reflected in the relevant interface before starting the swap, then review a fresh quote.
Never share your seed phrase or private key with a website, support contact, or purported solver. A legitimate swap flow should not require you to disclose them.
What to check before signing
- Exact token and network: Verify the full asset identity and chain in the wallet and swap interface, not only the ticker symbol.
- Actual received amount: Compare the quoted output with what you expect to receive. There is no universal fee or output figure established for all NEAR routes.
- Costs and execution terms: Inspect route fees, network costs, slippage settings or other execution conditions, and any quote expiry shown. A quote can become stale before you sign.
- Route dependencies: Identify whether the swap is a NEAR-native DEX trade or relies on a solver, bridge, or other cross-chain mechanism.
- Signature details: Read the wallet prompt. Do not sign if it requests an action you do not understand or shows different assets, amounts, or destination details.
NEAR Intents’ site reports more than $33 billion in all-time volume across 35 chains, observed on October 7, 2026. That is a changing product-site figure; it does not establish liquidity, safety, price quality, or availability for a particular pair. The site’s descriptions of speed or execution quality likewise do not guarantee a settlement time, fee, or outcome for your trade.

Can I swap NEAR without an exchange?
Yes, if by “exchange” you mean a centralized exchange that takes custody of deposited funds. A wallet-based DEX or a supported NEAR Intents route can let you swap without making that deposit. It is still an exchange transaction: you rely on the wallet interface, token contracts, and the route’s execution mechanisms, and a cross-chain path adds bridge and supported-asset dependencies.
A hardware wallet is optional, not a requirement for swapping. Ledger says its devices store private keys offline and can sign transactions, while swap and related transaction services are supplied by third-party providers and may vary by jurisdiction. NEAR Intents also displays testimonials on its own site, including statements about user control and cross-chain functionality. Those are provider-hosted testimonials, not independent assessments of a route’s safety or performance.
