China ranked first at about $295.4 billion, followed by Mexico at $171.5 billion. The ranking measures goods imports minus goods exports for each country; it is not a ranking of trade in goods and services.
Which countries had the biggest U.S. trade deficits in 2024?
The table ranks the ten countries by their 2024 U.S. goods trade balance, from the largest deficit downward. Amounts are rounded to the nearest $0.1 billion from the U.S. Census Bureau’s figures, which are reported in millions of dollars. A negative balance means the United States imported more goods from that country than it exported there.

How to read the country ranking
A trade balance is the value of exports minus the value of imports. When imports exceed exports, the balance is negative and is described as a deficit. The order above uses the balance column in Census Exhibit 13, not the separate export or import rankings.

The list reflects bilateral trade in goods, such as merchandise, rather than the full economic relationship between the United States and each country. It also does not identify which products account for a country’s balance or establish what caused it.
How the country figures compare with the national trade balance
For all U.S. trading partners combined, the 2024 goods-and-services trade deficit was $918.4 billion. In the same annual release, the goods deficit was $1,211.7 billion and the services balance was a $293.3 billion surplus. Those are national totals; they are not the sum of the ten country figures in the table, which cover goods only and list just ten partners.
Rank #2
The national totals come from the U.S. Census Bureau and Bureau of Economic Analysis’ 2024 annual trade release, published February 5, 2025.
