Epigamia began in 2015 as Drums Food International’s move from seasonal ice cream into Greek yogurt. Its name, according to co-founder Rohan Mirchandani, reflects the meeting of Greek and Indian identities: he connected it to a Greek concept associated with marriage between people from different communities.

Why Drums Food launched Epigamia

Drums Food International first built its business around Hokey Pokey, a premium ice-cream brand. Ice cream sold seasonally, and the business faced distribution challenges outside peak periods. The company saw Greek yogurt as a complementary product that could make better use of its dairy sourcing and cold-chain capabilities while addressing interest in healthier food, Mirchandani said in a 2021 interview with Food Marketing and Technology Magazine.

The company launched Epigamia Greek yogurt in 2015; Mirchandani specified June of that year. The product required a different operating approach from frozen ice cream because yogurt needed refrigerated distribution. Still, the idea found an early audience: a 2023 Scroll.in excerpt from a book by Harsh Pamnani reports that 10,000 cups were sold in the first month. That is the excerpt’s figure, not an independently audited sales total.

How the name Epigamia was chosen

Mirchandani said the founders associated “Epigamia” with a Greek concept of inter-city marriage. In the 2021 interview, he described it as the legal right to intermarry between ancient Greek city-states. He said the idea suited a product that combined Greek yogurt with an Indian identity: “The marriage of two different civilizations is the essence of our product, as it has a very Indian DNA despite being Greek yogurt.”

The name’s explanation is best understood as the founders’ account of their choice, not as an independently verified history of the word. A 2023 Scroll excerpt offers a related account involving the Mauryan and Seleucid empires, but the sources differ in how they frame the historical background. What they have in common is the brand’s intended idea of connection across cultures.

Greek yogurt as the brand’s starting point

Greek yogurt was Epigamia’s first product, rather than one item added to an established portfolio. The company’s About page describes its first creation as bringing Indian and Greek cultures together in a cup. Investor Verlinvest likewise identifies Greek yogurt as Drums Food’s first launch and describes Drums Food as the Indian FMCG company behind Epigamia on its portfolio page.

The company’s product range later expanded beyond yogurt, but the brand’s founding story remains tied to that first combination: an Indian business drawing on Greek-style yogurt and presenting it for local tastes and snacking habits.
