Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf your SSD is nearly full, first find out what is using the space, then remove files you can replace or move the files you want to keep. You may not need to buy a larger internal drive: a compatible external drive can suit archives and media, while an internal upgrade only makes sense if your computer supports it and you need more always-available local storage. The right first step is diagnosis, not a blanket cleanup or a rushed purchase.
Check what is taking up space before deleting anything
Start with your operating system’s storage view and inspect the largest categories or files. This helps distinguish disposable items from personal files, backups, and data that an app needs.
Windows
Open Settings > System > Storage. Review the storage categories and, where available, open Cleanup recommendations to see what Windows proposes to remove. Microsoft’s Windows storage guidance covers Windows 10 and 11: Free up drive space in Windows.
Mac
On macOS Ventura 13 or later, open System Settings > General > Storage. Apple’s categories can help you locate large apps and files. “System Data” is a broad category for Apple and third-party files that do not fit elsewhere; its label is not a reason to delete system files. See Apple’s Free up storage space on Mac.

Remove low-risk files and content you can get back
Review items individually rather than selecting everything a cleanup tool lists. Good candidates are files you recognize and no longer need, or content you can download again.
- Downloads: Sort by size and remove installers, duplicate files, or old documents you no longer need.
- Temporary files: Use Windows’ built-in storage tools and check what each category contains before removing it. Disk Cleanup is another built-in option.
- Unused applications: Uninstall apps you do not use, taking care not to remove software or components you still need.
- Old device backups: Check that a backup is genuinely obsolete before deleting it; keep a current backup if it protects data you care about.
- Replaceable media: Consider removing movies, music, or other files that you can stream or download again.
- Trash or Recycle Bin: Deleting files may not reclaim their space until you empty the bin. Check its contents first.
Storage Sense can automatically remove certain temporary files and Recycle Bin items, depending on its settings. If you use it, review those settings so it does not remove items you intended to keep. Avoid deleting unfamiliar files from system folders. Microsoft also warns that removing a previous Windows installation removes the option to return to the previous Windows version.

Move files you want to keep instead of deleting them
For large photo and video libraries, project folders, and archives you do not need every day, moving files can free internal capacity without giving them up. Apple specifically recommends moving large media libraries, including Photos or iMovie libraries, to another storage device. Kingston also describes large-file review and external storage as general options in its SSD storage guidance.
External storage
An external SSD is a practical choice when you want portable storage and frequent access to a modest set of files; an external hard drive may be a lower-cost-per-gigabyte option for an archive you access less often. Check that the drive’s connector works with your computer and that its file system suits the devices you plan to use. Keep a separate backup of irreplaceable files: a single external drive is not a backup if it is the only copy.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Cloud and on-demand files
Cloud storage can reduce the amount stored locally, but it is subject to account storage limits and may require an internet connection to retrieve files. OneDrive Files On-Demand can keep a smaller local placeholder while the full file remains in OneDrive. Confirm which files are available offline before relying on them away from a connection.
Keep enough free space for the task you need to do
There is no universal free-space percentage that suits every SSD or computer. Use the actual warning from your device or app, and leave enough room for the work you need to perform. For Windows updates, Microsoft’s current support guidance says a typical feature update may need 6 GB–11 GB or more free, while a typical quality update may need 2 GB–3 GB or more. Requirements vary with the update path, optional features, installed languages, and other update content. See Free up space for Windows updates for Microsoft’s instructions.

| Option | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Delete replaceable files or unused apps | Recovering space without buying hardware | Confirm each item is safe to remove and can be recovered if needed. |
| External SSD or hard drive | Keeping media, archives, or projects outside the computer while retaining access to them | Connector and file-system compatibility, portability, backup plan, and capacity required. |
| Cloud or on-demand storage | Files you do not need to keep fully stored on the computer | Account limits, internet access, offline availability, and any ongoing storage cost. |
| Internal SSD upgrade | More always-available local storage, if the computer supports replacement or expansion | Device-specific compatibility, upgradeability, installation requirements, and cost. |
Do not assume an internal SSD can be upgraded: that depends on the computer model, and no universal compatibility answer applies. If most of the space is taken by infrequently used media, external or cloud storage may be less disruptive. If apps and active work need more local room, check the manufacturer’s guidance for your exact model before pricing an internal upgrade.
What rising SSD prices mean for the decision
Omdia’s March 2026 executive summary estimates that SSDs will be almost 13 times the price of HDDs per gigabyte through 2026, more than double the ratio in 2023. This is an industry estimate about SSDs versus hard drives, hosted in a report focused on infrastructure—not a live retail quote for a specific consumer drive, country, or model. It is useful context for comparing storage types, but it does not establish that a particular SSD is overpriced or predict when consumer prices will change. The estimate appears in Omdia’s March 2026 executive summary.
For a personal purchase, compare the cost of the capacity you actually need, whether files must be available offline, and the cost and inconvenience of moving data. Avoid buying an internal drive until you have confirmed both that your computer supports the upgrade and that extra local capacity addresses the real bottleneck.
