Confirm the drive type and interface, physical dimensions, available slot or bay, maximum supported capacity, and the system’s speed limits before you buy. “M.2” describes a drive’s shape, not a guarantee that it supports NVMe.
1. Find your computer’s exact model
Use the full model name or number—not just a broad product family—because storage options can differ between configurations. Look for the identifier on the computer, in its system settings, or on the manufacturer’s support page. Search that model on the manufacturer’s website and open its technical specifications and user or service manual. ASUS and MSI both direct users to check storage support against the exact model (ASUS support guidance; MSI storage-upgrade guidance).
Record the model identifier and any configuration details shown on the support page. If the manufacturer lists several versions, make sure you consult the one that matches your computer.
2. Check what is installed—and what can be added
On Windows, open System Information and go to Components → Storage → Disks to see information about installed drives, including their reported size. You can also open Defragment and Optimize Drives to see the drive’s reported media type. These checks describe the hardware currently in the computer; they do not prove that a different drive will be compatible or that another slot is available.

A compatibility tool such as Crucial’s scanner or selector can help identify system details and possible upgrade options, but use the computer maker’s specifications and manual to verify the exact model’s limits (Crucial System Scanner and Selector).
3. Match the drive interface and protocol
Check whether your computer supports a 2.5-inch SATA SSD, an M.2 SATA SSD, an M.2 PCIe/NVMe SSD, or more than one of these. Do not choose by connector shape alone. M.2 is a form factor, and an M.2 slot may support SATA, PCIe/NVMe, or both; some support only one. Dell cautions that not all M.2 drives work in all systems (Dell SSD FAQ).

- MORE COMPATIBLE THAN EVER: 870 EVO has been compatibility tested for major host systems and applications, including chipsets, motherboards, NAS, and video recording devices. Interface- SATA 6GB/s, compatible with SATA 3GB/s and SATA 1.5GB/s interfaces
For the same reason, a listing that says “M.2 NVMe” is not enough to establish compatibility. Confirm that the computer’s specifications explicitly support the drive’s protocol and interface.
4. Confirm physical fit and whether a slot is free
For an M.2 drive, check the supported length, key and interface in the model-specific documentation. A designation such as 2280 refers to an M.2 size; it does not, by itself, confirm protocol compatibility. Also find out whether the M.2 slot is already occupied. If you are considering a 2.5-inch SATA drive, verify that the computer has the bay, connector and space required. MSI’s guidance explains why supported lengths, key/interface types and model-specific slots matter (MSI storage-upgrade guidance).

- SAMSUNG MAGICIAN SOFTWARE: Get the most out of your SSD with Samsung Magician's advanced yet intuitive optimization tools; Monitor drive health, protect valuable data, and receive important updates for your 990 PRO
If the existing drive occupies the only compatible slot, upgrading may require replacing it rather than adding a second drive. Check the manual for the actual internal layout and supported installation options.
5. Check maximum capacity and speed limits
Look up the maximum supported storage capacity and interface generation for your exact model. Do not infer a capacity limit from the connector, or assume that another computer in the same product line has the same limit. As an example—not a general rule—ASUS’s support guidance describes a configuration limited to a 512 GB M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 SSD. The figure applies to that example, not to ASUS computers generally (ASUS support guidance).

- Upgrade your laptop or desktop computer and feel the difference with super-fast OS boot times and application loads
- Exceptional performance offering up to 535MB/s seq. Read and 500MB/s seq. Write speeds
- Superior performance as compared to traditional hard drives (HDD)
- Ultra-low power consumption
- Backwards compatible with SATA II 3GB/sec
A newer, faster SSD may operate in a system with an older PCIe generation, but the host’s generation and lane limit constrain its performance. Crucial’s installation guide explains: “Though NVMe SSDs are backward compatible (meaning a Gen5 SSD will work in a Gen4 system, etc.) they are not forward compatible, and you will not be able to achieve Gen5 performance in a Gen4 system” (Crucial T705 installation guide). In practical terms, a faster drive does not make an older computer run at the drive’s advertised maximum speed.

Quick Recap
7. Prepare for installation
- Back up your files. Save important data somewhere separate from the drive you plan to replace or modify.
- Follow the model’s service instructions. Use the computer or motherboard manual for access and installation steps, including any model-specific precautions.
- Do not force a drive that does not fit. If an M.2 SSD is not detected after installation, check that it is the supported type and length and that it is seated correctly; consult the manual or manufacturer support if it remains undetected (Crucial SSD troubleshooting guidance).
