Choose a crypto exchange by checking, in order, whether the right legal entity can serve you and offer the service you need, how it handles custody and security, what your full transaction will cost, and whether the market for your specific trade is liquid enough. There is no universal best exchange: the right shortlist depends on your location, the assets and products you plan to use, and how you expect to trade.
How should you compare crypto exchanges?
Compare providers on the same use case rather than on brand recognition or a single headline metric. Write down your country or state of residence, the asset and trading pair you want, your expected order size, how you will fund the account, and whether you need to withdraw the asset afterward. Then evaluate each provider against those same assumptions.
- Confirm the provider’s serving legal entity and whether it can offer your intended service where you live.
- Review custody, security disclosures, incident information, and withdrawal and recovery processes.
- Estimate the full cost of the same transaction, including fees and spreads.
- Check the spread and order-book depth for your target pair and order size.
- Verify supported assets, networks, limits, restrictions, and customer-support routes.
Do not treat this checklist as a ranking system that automatically produces a winner. A provider can be convenient for one location or trading pattern and unsuitable for another.
Is the exchange available and appropriately authorized where you live?
Identify the legal entity and the exact service
An exchange brand may operate through different legal entities or offer different products in different places. Find the legal entity that would actually serve your account, confirm that it accepts residents of your location, and identify the specific service you intend to use. Spot trading, custody, and other products may not have the same legal treatment or availability.

Check the relevant regulator’s current register and warning notices for that entity and activity. A registration or permission covering one activity is not blanket authorization for every crypto product, asset, or service the company offers. Similarly, a regulator listing is not a recommendation that an exchange is safe or suitable for you.
Do not assume one regulator’s status settles the question
In the United States, whether securities laws apply can depend on the crypto asset and the activity involved. The SEC’s 2026 guidance describes registration as relevant to protections for specified regulated activities; it does not establish that every crypto exchange must register with the SEC or that an SEC-related status answers whether a platform is legal or suitable in every location.
Regulatory status and timing also vary by country. In the UK, the FCA says it published final rules and guidance on 30 June 2026. The FCA describes the rules as applying to cryptoasset firms granted permission under FSMA on or after 25 October 2027; its separate registration information says the new regime starts on 25 October 2027 and describes an application process under the Money Laundering Regulations. These are UK-specific dates, not a global test of authorization. Check the FCA and the regulator responsible for your own location for current requirements and status.

What should you look for in custody and security?
Understand who holds the assets and how you can withdraw them
Look for a clear explanation of who holds customer assets, what happens when you request a withdrawal, and which supported networks and conditions apply. Read the provider’s disclosures about security controls and past incidents, if disclosed. Also find out what the provider says would happen to account access and withdrawals if its service were interrupted or the firm failed. A reassuring security slogan is not a substitute for answers to these operational questions.

Read proof-of-reserves claims with care
A proof-of-reserves report should not be treated as a financial statement audit or as proof that a firm can meet all customer liabilities. The SEC warns that these reports may not provide meaningful assurance that customer liabilities can be met. If a provider publishes one, assess what it covers: which assets and liabilities were included, the date represented, how often the report is repeated, who performed it, what standards and level of assurance applied, and whether the provider was independent.
Even a report that answers those questions does not, by itself, settle every concern about custody, liabilities, or the provider’s ability to operate. Consider it one disclosure to evaluate alongside the firm’s other information, not a guarantee.

How do you calculate the real cost of using an exchange?
Compare the same transaction on each platform
Use the same asset, order size, payment method, and withdrawal route when comparing providers. Add up the costs that apply to the transaction rather than comparing a single advertised fee.
- Trading fees: Check maker and taker charges if the platform uses them, and determine which would apply to your order.
- Spread: Compare the buy and sell quotes. The difference between them can affect your cost even when a stated trading fee looks low.
- Funding and conversion: Include deposit charges, payment-method costs, and any fee or price impact when converting between assets or currencies.
- Withdrawal: Check the charge for withdrawing the asset and network you intend to use, as well as any applicable limits or conditions.
- Financing: If you are considering a product that uses borrowing or financing, account for those costs too.
Fee schedules and terms can change, and a fee shown for one payment method or product may not apply to another. This checklist does not establish current prices for any named exchange, so use each provider’s current schedule and transaction preview before funding an account.

Check liquidity for the exact trading pair and the size of order you expect to place. A headline volume ranking alone does not show how much the price might move when your order is executed.

- Inspect the bid-ask spread for the pair you intend to trade.
- Look at order-book depth around the price where you expect to trade, especially at your intended order size.
- Confirm that the platform supports the exact pair and the order type you need.
- Consider whether the pair and order book are available in your region and through the product you plan to use.
No current venue-by-venue liquidity measurements are established here, so these checks support a comparison method, not a ranking of exchanges. Liquidity can differ by asset pair and order size; do not assume that a platform’s general reputation or total reported volume answers the question for your trade.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What else should you check before opening or funding an account?
Confirm practical account conditions before transferring money or crypto. Check the provider’s current terms and account pages for:
- Withdrawal limits, processing conditions, and any account restrictions that could affect your expected use.
- The assets available to customers in your location and the specific networks supported for deposits and withdrawals.
- How to contact customer support and what recovery steps are available if you lose access to the account.
- Whether the service or product you intend to use has additional requirements or restrictions.
Do not infer that an asset or network is supported just because the exchange lists it for trading. Verify the deposit and withdrawal options separately, and follow the provider’s instructions for the specific asset and network.

How should you make the final decision?
First remove any provider that cannot serve your location or offer the activity you need through the relevant legal entity. For the remaining options, compare custody and security disclosures, the cost of your defined transaction, liquidity for your intended pair and order size, and the operational conditions that matter to you. Use current regulator registers, provider fee schedules, product information, and terms; these details can change.
This method can narrow a shortlist, but it cannot establish current fees, liquidity, security controls, solvency, or legal status for a named exchange without checking that provider’s current information. It also cannot identify one universally best exchange in the absence of a particular location and use case.
