Elon Musk’s fortune reached a record by late November 2024, but the exact post-election increase depends on which estimate and baseline you use. The Forbes article associated with the “$57 billion” wording now says about $70 billion, while Bloomberg estimated Musk’s net worth at $347.8 billion on November 22, 2024. These are dated estimates—not cash Musk received—and the outlets used different valuation methods.
What was Elon Musk’s net worth after the 2024 election?
Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index put Musk’s estimated net worth at $347.8 billion on November 22, 2024, calling it an all-time high at that point. Bloomberg attributed the record to Tesla’s ongoing stock rally and a new funding round that valued Musk’s artificial-intelligence company xAI at $50 billion. Bloomberg’s November 22 report
Forbes’ estimate for the same date was lower: $321.7 billion before an xAI adjustment, or $334.3 billion after Forbes added $13 billion for Musk’s xAI holding. The figures should not be combined or presented as a single exact value. They are separate publisher estimates based on different inputs.
Does the Forbes article verify a $57 billion windfall?
Not in the version currently displayed. The Forbes URL contains “57-billion,” but its live headline says “$70 Billion Post-Election Windfall,” and its body says Musk’s fortune was about $70 billion higher than on Election Day. The page does not explain when or why its headline figure changed, so the $57 billion amount is not verified by the current article text. Forbes article

The figure also depends on the comparison point. A claimed increase from Election Day is not interchangeable with a weekly gain, a one-day market move, or the difference between two net-worth snapshots. Any post-election total needs both a stated baseline and a dated estimate.
Why the estimates differed
Net worth estimates are calculations of assets minus liabilities, not audited statements of cash on hand. Publicly traded shares can be valued using market prices, but private-company stakes and awards that have not vested or been received require assumptions. Bloomberg describes its index as “a dynamic measure of personal wealth based on changes in markets, the economy and Bloomberg reporting.” Bloomberg Billionaires Index profile

Forbes’ November 22 calculation illustrates how those assumptions matter. It described Musk’s Tesla stake as 13%, valued at $145 billion, and applied a 50% discount to a pending 9% Tesla equity award. It valued his 42% SpaceX stake at $88 billion using a $210 billion company valuation. For xAI, Forbes used a $50 billion company valuation and a 60% Musk stake, adding $13 billion in its adjusted estimate. These are Forbes’ valuation inputs, not independently audited asset values. | Publisher and estimate | Date and basis | What it included |

| Bloomberg: $347.8 billion | November 22, 2024; Bloomberg described it as a record at the time | Bloomberg cited Tesla’s rally and xAI’s $50 billion funding-round valuation. Treatment of a pending Tesla award is not stated in the cited report. |
| Forbes: $321.7 billion | November 22, 2024; Forbes estimate before its xAI adjustment | Forbes’ estimate before adding $13 billion for Musk’s xAI holding. |

What drove the rise, and what can be said about the election?
Tesla’s rally was a major part of the period’s increase. Forbes estimated Musk’s net worth at $304 billion at the November 8 market close, up $41 billion from the November 1 close, as Tesla shares rose nearly 30% that week. Forbes’ November 8 report

Bloomberg’s later November 22 account also cited xAI’s new funding-round valuation, so Tesla’s stock alone does not explain its record estimate. More broadly, reports linked the post-election rally to investor expectations of a more favorable policy and regulatory environment after Donald Trump’s victory. That is reported market context, not proof that the election mechanically caused a specific dollar amount to be added to Musk’s wealth.
The Guardian, citing the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, reported that the ten richest people gained nearly $64 billion collectively on November 6, 2024, the day after the U.S. election; Musk’s estimated contribution was $26.5 billion. That one-day estimate differs from Forbes’ weekly gain and the later November 22 totals. The Guardian’s November 6 report

Was the windfall money Musk could spend?
No. A rise in estimated net worth is not the same as income, cash proceeds, or money realized by selling shares. Public shares are typically marked to market, so their estimated value can move with the stock price; private stakes may depend on financing-round valuations and other assumptions. Unless assets are sold or otherwise converted to cash, a higher estimate does not mean an equivalent amount was deposited into Musk’s accounts.

How to read a billionaire net-worth headline
- Check the date. A record reported in November 2024 is a historical estimate, not a current balance.
- Identify the publisher. Bloomberg and Forbes reported different totals for November 22.
- Look for valuation assumptions. Private-company stakes and pending awards can materially change an estimate.
- Check the baseline. A post-election increase, a weekly change, and a one-day gain measure different periods.
- Separate valuation from cash. A higher estimated fortune does not establish that the owner sold assets or received the difference.
