UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot outside the New York Hilton Midtown in Manhattan on December 4, 2024, as he was walking to UnitedHealth Group’s investor conference. Luigi Mangione later pleaded guilty in federal court to two stalking counts connected with Thompson’s death, but a separate New York state murder and weapons case remains pending as of October 7, 2026.

What happened to Brian Thompson?

Thompson was shot outside the Midtown Hilton at approximately 6:45 a.m. on December 4, 2024, while on his way to UnitedHealth Group’s investor conference. The U.S. Department of Justice’s Southern District of New York says Mangione approached him from behind and shot him multiple times. The New York State Supreme Court, New York County, described Thompson as having been “shot to death outside of the Hilton hotel in midtown Manhattan.”

Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on December 9, five days after the shooting. Federal and state prosecutors announced charges in December 2024; those initial charges were allegations, not findings of guilt. The DOJ announcement noted that defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

What is the latest on Luigi Mangione’s case?

The federal and New York state proceedings are separate and must be understood on their own terms.

Federal case

On August 14, 2026, Mangione pleaded guilty in federal court to two stalking counts connected with Thompson’s death, according to the DOJ’s Southern District of New York. That plea is a federal court development; it does not resolve the separate state case.

New York state case

Mangione’s New York state murder and weapons case has not concluded. On August 17, 2026, the state court canceled the trial scheduled for September 8 and postponed proceedings indefinitely while his lawyers pursued a motion to dismiss the charges on double-jeopardy grounds. The Associated Press reported that a hearing was scheduled for December 10. Its October 2 update said the state proceedings remained postponed. The court’s decision on the motion, and the eventual status of the state charges, are not established as of October 7, 2026.

Why the federal plea does not end the state case

The plea concerns federal stalking counts, while the murder and weapons charges are part of a separate New York state proceeding. The state court is considering the defense’s double-jeopardy challenge. The federal plea alone does not determine whether that state motion succeeds or what happens to the state charges; no ruling or final disposition is established in the cited updates as of October 7, 2026.

How to read updates on the case

  • Check which proceeding an update concerns. A federal filing or plea is not the same as a state-court ruling.
  • Use precise legal language. A charge is an allegation; a guilty plea is a plea to the counts identified; a pending motion is unresolved until the court rules.
  • Check the date. Scheduling and case status can change, so a report’s publication date matters.
