WYRK reported on October 6, 2026, that Citi plans to close Sunoco Rewards Credit Card accounts on October 31, 2026. That is a scheduled future closure—not an immediate discontinuation—and the date has not been independently confirmed here against a Citi-issued notice. The report concerns this Sunoco-branded card program, not all Citi cards or every way to pay at Sunoco.
What is happening to the Citi Sunoco credit card?
According to WYRK’s October 6, 2026 report, Citi will close Sunoco Rewards Credit Card accounts on October 31, 2026. WYRK attributes the date to a customer notice, but the report does not link to the original notice. Check the message in your own Citi account for confirmation and account-specific instructions.
The available information concerns the Sunoco Rewards Credit Card issued through Citi. It does not establish that Citi is discontinuing other credit cards or that Sunoco will stop accepting other payment methods.
What cardholders should do before the reported closure date
- Find your account notice. Sign in to your Citi account and review messages or mailed correspondence. Confirm the closure date stated for your account, as well as any instructions about statements, payments, and rewards.
- Keep paying as usual unless Citi tells you otherwise. Review your statement for the amount due, due date, and payment method. The available sources do not establish a universal final-payment schedule.
- Check for charges that may post later. Save statements and review the account after the closure date for transactions or other amounts that appear after closure.
- Review rewards before the account closes. The existing program terms tie the fuel discount to an account that is open and current. Confirm with Citi or Sunoco whether your accrued rewards can be used during the transition.
- Keep records. Save the closure notice, statements, payment confirmations, and any communications about rewards or account servicing.
Do you still have to pay the balance after closure?
Yes. Account closure does not erase amounts owed. Citi’s Sunoco Fuels Private Label Credit Card agreement says that if Citi closes or suspends an account, or the cardholder closes it, the cardholder must pay amounts owed—including amounts that post after closure or suspension. Your statement and account communications determine your specific balance and payment instructions.

Will the current five-cent fuel discount continue?
Sunoco’s current card-program terms describe a five-cent-per-gallon discount at participating Sunoco locations for qualifying fuel purchases. The terms require the account to remain open and current to earn discounts. They do not establish that the benefit will continue after account closure or transfer to a different card.
Is the new Sunoco Rewards Plus card available?
Sunoco’s official credit-card page advertises a “New Sunoco Rewards Plus Credit Card” as “Coming Soon” and says applications are currently closed. Sunoco says information is subject to final approval and launch timing. The page does not identify the future issuer, provide a launch date, or publish final card terms, so it is not yet possible to determine whether it will be a like-for-like replacement.

Why is Citi closing the existing card?
The available reporting does not establish a sourced reason for the closure. WYRK’s article speculates about a partnership change, but Sunoco’s official page does not confirm the cause or name a future issuer. Treat explanations about the companies’ arrangements as unconfirmed unless Citi or Sunoco provides a direct statement.
