There is no universal “perfect” design: the right version depends on the audience, campaign goal, and platform. That matters especially for responsive ads, which may combine uploaded assets in different arrangements.
What makes a banner ad effective?
A banner has little space, and its audience is usually focused on something else. Give the creative one clear job: help the intended person recognize a relevant offer and understand what to do next.
Make the image explain the offer
Choose a high-quality, relevant image that shows the product, service, or benefit. Google’s responsive display ad guidance advises against overlaid text, button graphics, collages, and digital composite backgrounds. Those elements can also become awkward when a responsive system rearranges assets.
Use plain, specific copy
Google Ads Help advises: “Use a clear and simple text to describe your product, service, or brand.” In its display-ad guidance, Google also cautions against generic messaging, all caps, and clickbait. Say what is being offered and keep supporting detail short enough to read at the intended display size.
Make the action and destination agree
Use a clear call to action, then send the reader to a page that delivers on it. If the banner names a promotion or asks someone to call, make that same promotion or phone number easy to find after the click. A mismatch interrupts the path the ad promised.
How should you plan the design?
1. Decide the campaign’s job
Specify the audience, what the reader should understand, and the action you want them to take. Choose the campaign KPI before comparing creative—for example, the outcome that matters to this campaign rather than a general preference for clicks or impressions. IAB UK’s creative best-practice guidance emphasizes fitting creative to its purpose and audience segment; do not assume one banner will suit every segment equally well.
2. Establish a simple visual hierarchy
Lead with one recognizable product, service, or benefit. Make the brand mark clear and the headline the most useful short explanation of the offer. Keep secondary copy subordinate. For responsive image assets, avoid making essential text or button-like graphics part of the image: the platform may compose that image with other assets in combinations you did not lay out yourself.
3. Match the message to the next step
Write the headline and description around the actual offer, then make the call to action explicit. Check that the destination page repeats the relevant offer and makes the promised action available. Google’s display-ad tips cover copy, calls to action, and landing-page alignment.

What image sizes should you prepare?
For Google responsive display image assets, Google lists these recommended sizes and minimums. They are Google Ads specifications, not universal dimensions for every fixed-size ad or publisher; check the active campaign and placement requirements before delivery.
| Orientation | Aspect ratio | Recommended size | Minimum size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Landscape | 1.91:1 | 1200 × 628 pixels | 600 × 314 pixels |
| Square | 1:1 | 1200 × 1200 pixels | 300 × 300 pixels |
| Portrait | 9:16 | 900 × 1600 pixels | 600 × 1067 pixels |
Google advises supplying more landscape images than square or portrait images. Its guidance also says a logo should be clear and simple, with a 1:1 or 4:1 aspect ratio. These figures come from Google Ads’ responsive display and creative tips; confirm current requirements for your campaign.

How do platform and delivery requirements affect design?
Build for the actual inventory rather than relying on a fixed-size guide that may no longer apply. IAB Tech Lab says its New Ad Portfolio supersedes its older mobile and desktop display creative guidelines. It emphasizes flexible sizing, lightweight delivery, and less disruptive ad experiences. For HTML5 creative, the IAB Tech Lab HTML5 guidance explains that ads combine web technologies and assets, so implementation choices matter alongside the visual design.
For publishers implementing Google Publisher Tag, Google recommends considering additional sizes that fit comfortably within an ad slot. A broader set of eligible sizes may increase the number of ads that can serve and may affect fill rates and revenue, but this is a publisher-side implementation consideration—not a guarantee that an individual advertiser’s design will perform better. How should you test banner designs?
Test a small number of meaningfully different versions against the campaign KPI chosen in advance. Google suggests creating three to four ads per ad group and says it may show better-performing ads more often. Treat that as platform guidance, not proof that any particular color, layout, or button will win.
- Set a hypothesis: for example, test whether a product-focused image or a benefit-focused image makes the offer clearer to the target audience.
- Change a deliberate element: vary the lead image or offer wording while keeping enough else consistent to interpret the result.
- Compare against the same outcome: evaluate each version using the campaign’s selected KPI and comparable conditions.
- Apply the result to the right audience and placement: a result for one segment or format does not establish that the same creative will work everywhere.
IAB UK’s guidance likewise describes testing and optimization around campaign segments and KPIs. Its page includes a WEX example reporting a 19% decrease in cost of sale and an 11% increase in average order value, but does not state the case’s publication year; those figures should not be treated as a dated benchmark for other campaigns.
