Yes—January 2026 reports said talks around NVIDIA’s proposed up-to-$100 billion OpenAI arrangement had stalled. But the headline needs a crucial qualification: the 2025 announcement was a letter of intent, not proof that NVIDIA had paid or closed a $100 billion deal. NVIDIA later announced a $30 billion investment in OpenAI’s 2026 funding round, and OpenAI said that round closed with $122 billion in committed capital. Public sources reviewed do not establish whether the original letter of intent was formally canceled, amended, or replaced.
What NVIDIA and OpenAI originally announced
On September 22, 2025, NVIDIA and OpenAI announced a letter of intent for at least 10 gigawatts of NVIDIA systems to support OpenAI infrastructure. NVIDIA said it intended to invest up to $100 billion progressively as each gigawatt was deployed. The initial phase was targeted for the second half of 2026, using NVIDIA Vera Rubin systems. The companies’ announcement described this as a proposed, deployment-linked investment and infrastructure partnership—not a completed $100 billion transfer.
The plan tied financing to computing capacity: the intended investment would be made in increments as deployment progressed. The companies also said OpenAI would work with NVIDIA as a preferred strategic compute and networking partner, coordinating model, infrastructure software, hardware, and software roadmaps.
Why the talks were described as stalled
On January 30–31, 2026, news reports said discussions around the original arrangement had stalled and that the companies were discussing a smaller investment. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang disputed the implication that NVIDIA would not invest, saying NVIDIA would participate in OpenAI’s funding round. The reported reasons for the pause were not confirmed by an official company explanation in the public material reviewed, so they should be treated as reporting rather than an established account of why talks slowed.

On February 25, Huang told Axios: “We continue to work with OpenAI toward a partnership agreement, and believe we are close.” Axios also reported that the September arrangement had not yet closed at that point. Huang’s remarks signaled continued discussions, but did not confirm that NVIDIA would invest the full $100 billion on the original terms.
How the later funding and compute announcements differ
On February 27, OpenAI announced a different, more specific funding structure: $110 billion in new investment at a $730 billion pre-money valuation. Its announcement named $30 billion from NVIDIA, $30 billion from SoftBank, and $50 billion from Amazon. OpenAI also said it was expanding its NVIDIA compute relationship to include 3 gigawatts of dedicated inference capacity and 2 gigawatts of training on Vera Rubin systems. Those were the terms OpenAI announced for the 2026 round and compute expansion.

On March 31, OpenAI said the round had closed with $122 billion in committed capital at an $852 billion post-money valuation, anchored by Amazon, NVIDIA, and SoftBank, with continued participation from Microsoft. That establishes the later round’s reported closing; it does not establish that the separate 2025 deployment-linked plan was fulfilled as originally described. The two announcements should not be treated as interchangeable: one was a letter of intent linked to future system deployments, while the other was a named investment in a later funding round plus an expanded compute arrangement.
Is NVIDIA still investing in OpenAI?
OpenAI’s February announcement named NVIDIA as a $30 billion investor in its 2026 funding round. OpenAI subsequently said the round closed, while NVIDIA had publicly indicated it intended to participate. A later payment detail remains attributed reporting: on October 2, Cinco Días, citing The Information, reported that NVIDIA and SoftBank had each paid the final $10 billion of their respective $30 billion commitments. That installment detail is not independently confirmed by the official announcements cited here.

There were also later reports about possible additional support, not a completed arrangement. On July 27, Axios reported that NVIDIA was weighing potential support for an Ohio data-center project and possible financing for OpenAI chip purchases, citing the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg; it said NVIDIA and OpenAI had no immediate comment. Those possibilities should not be described as completed deals.

The available public announcements and reporting do not establish whether the September 2025 letter of intent remains in force, was amended, or was superseded by later arrangements. They also do not establish a definitive company-confirmed reason for the reported stall. The careful conclusion is that talks around the original up-to-$100 billion proposal were reported stalled, while NVIDIA continued into a later funding round and compute partnership with OpenAI. That is not the same as proof that a signed $100 billion cash deal was canceled—or completed.
