Mastercard’s published plans describe a staged, regional transition: chip and contactless payments are taking over, while some cards and payment terminals may continue to support swiping during the changeover.
Why payment cards are moving beyond the stripe
A magnetic stripe stores payment data that a terminal reads when a card is swiped. EMV chip payments work differently: the chip validates the card and generates a one-time security code for each transaction. That makes copied chip-transaction data less useful for counterfeiting a card-present purchase than copied stripe data.
Contactless payments use a similar one-time-code mechanism. A contactless card or an NFC-enabled phone communicates with a compatible terminal when tapped. EMVCo says its chip specifications are designed to make in-store chip payments work consistently across markets.
The transition does not mean physical cards are ending. A stripe-free card can still have a chip for inserting or dipping, and may also support tap-to-pay. A phone can make contactless payments too.

Mastercard’s magnetic-stripe timeline
Mastercard’s dates apply to its own cards and rules, not automatically to every payment network or issuer. Its 2021 announcement and its current rules document describe different stages and scopes:
| Milestone | What Mastercard said | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | New cards in most markets would no longer be required to have a magnetic stripe. | Announced by Mastercard in 2021; this was a change to the requirement, not proof that all newly issued cards immediately became stripe-free. |
| 2027 | U.S. banks would no longer be required to issue chip cards with stripes. | As stated in Mastercard’s 2021 announcement; it does not establish that every U.S. card will lose its stripe that year. |
| 2029 | Mastercard said no new credit or debit cards would be issued with stripes. | The 2021 announcement described prepaid cards in the U.S. and Canada as exempt from that announced change. Current Mastercard rules separately set a requirement for newly issued cards in the SEPA region effective 1 April 2029, with exceptions. |
| 2033 | All issued cards in SEPA must omit magnetic stripes. | Under Mastercard’s rules dated 2 December 2025; cards issued in Switzerland and non-reloadable prepaid cards are excepted. |
The current SEPA requirements are specific: from 1 April 2029, newly issued cards must support EMV chip and omit the stripe; from 1 April 2033, all issued cards must omit it. The stated exceptions are cards issued in Switzerland and non-reloadable prepaid cards. These regional rules should not be read as a worldwide, all-network deadline.

What to use instead of swiping
| Payment method | How it works | Security mechanism described by EMVCo |
|---|---|---|
| Magnetic stripe | Swipe the card through a reader. | The cited EMVCo material contrasts stripe data with chip transactions; it does not describe a one-time chip code for a stripe swipe. |
| Contact chip | Insert or dip the card into a compatible terminal. | The chip validates the card and generates a one-time security code for the transaction. |
| Contactless | Tap a contactless card or an NFC-enabled mobile device at a compatible terminal. | Uses a similar one-time-code mechanism to contact-chip transactions. |
Which method works at checkout depends on the merchant’s terminal and its supported payment options. The available information does not establish acceptance at any particular store.
Will existing cards or swipe terminals stop working on a set date?
No universal stop date is established by Mastercard’s regional and staged timetable. The end of a requirement to include stripes is not the same as proof that every existing card, issuer, or terminal will stop supporting stripe transactions at once. Mastercard’s rules provide a defined SEPA schedule, but they do not establish a single global cutoff for all networks.

For a specific card, check the issuer’s notices and the card’s expiry date. At a checkout, follow the terminal’s instructions: insert or tap if those options are available, or use another method the merchant accepts.

Mastercard reported in 2021 that a Phoenix Consumer Monitor survey found 81% of surveyed American cardholders would be comfortable with a card without a magnetic stripe, and 92% said they would increase or maintain their usage. Those are sponsor-reported survey findings, not an independent census or proof that all cardholders prefer chip or contactless payments.
