You can check the independent Pentester lookup linked by TIME, but its result is only a clue—not proof that your Social Security number was or was not exposed. The form currently asks for your email address, first and last name, and birth year; it does not ask for your full SSN. Review the site’s terms and privacy policy before entering personal information, and take steps to protect your credit whether or not the lookup finds a match.

The checker is an independent service, not an official government or credit-bureau tool. A match does not establish the full circumstances of exposure, and no match does not prove your information is safe. TIME reported in August 2024 that National Public Data (NPD) had not notified specific individuals, but the current checker’s coverage is not documented. Check the live page before using it because its form and policies can change.
What is known about the NPD breach
NPD, a background-check and fraud-prevention service, disclosed a security incident in 2024. Microsoft says NPD reported system access beginning in December 2023 and data leakage from April 2024 through summer 2024. The data described included names, Social Security numbers, mailing addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers. Microsoft’s breach explainer attributes a claim of up to 2.9 billion records associated with up to 170 million people to Bloomberg Law; those are alleged figures, not a verified count of unique people affected. TIME reported that hackers claimed to offer billions of records, while researchers said some claims were exaggerated. It also reported that NPD had not shared how many people were at risk.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) said on August 21, 2024, that the reports it was addressing concerned an unrelated incident and that its internal systems had not been compromised: “neither of which has been compromised.” That statement applies to SSA’s systems; it does not establish whether an individual’s SSN was exposed through NPD or another source. SSA’s public-service post gives the agency’s context.
Protect your credit and financial accounts
A lookup cannot tell you reliably that you are in the clear. These practical safeguards are useful whether or not the Pentester checker returns a match.

Freeze your credit at all three bureaus
A credit freeze is free, does not affect your credit score, and remains in place until you lift it. Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion separately; freezing with one does not freeze the other two. A freeze can make it harder for someone to open new credit in your name, but it does not stop charges or other misuse involving existing bank and card accounts. The Federal Trade Commission’s credit-freeze guidance explains how to place and lift one.
Consider a fraud alert
An initial fraud alert is free and lasts one year. Contacting one bureau is enough: it must notify the other two. The alert asks businesses to verify your identity before granting new credit, but unlike a freeze, it does not block access to your credit report. The FTC says an extended fraud alert lasts seven years and requires evidence of identity theft, such as an FTC identity-theft report or police report. See the FTC’s explanation of alerts and freezes.

Check reports and existing accounts
Review your credit reports for unfamiliar accounts or entries, and check bank, card, and other financial accounts for transactions you do not recognize. A freeze is aimed at new-credit applications, not activity on accounts you already have. The FTC’s guidance also recommends taking advantage of free monitoring if a company affected by a breach offers it; paid monitoring is optional and does not replace reviewing reports and accounts.
Check your Social Security earnings record
Sign in to or create a my Social Security account and review your Social Security Statement for earnings that do not belong to you. SSA recommends this as a way to spot possible misuse of your SSN.

If you find signs of identity theft
If you see an account, credit entry, transaction, or earnings record you do not recognize, use official recovery resources rather than relying on the breach checker. SSA directs people to IdentityTheft.gov for reporting identity theft and creating a recovery plan. For tax-related identity theft, SSA points to IRS Identity Theft Central. Contact the relevant bank, card issuer, or creditor promptly about suspicious activity.
Secure accounts and watch for impersonation
Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication (MFA) on important online accounts. Be cautious with unexpected calls, texts, or emails claiming to be from SSA; do not rely on a message’s claimed identity when deciding whether to share information. SSA’s scam and fraud guidance covers these precautions. An optional security key can provide a physical MFA method for services that support it, but it will not reveal whether an SSN appeared in leaked data or prevent every kind of identity theft.
