MotorTrend’s U.S.-spec first drive finds the redesigned 2026 Audi Q3 more polished inside, with a stronger engine and flexible rear seating. But the review also flags weak front-seat thigh support and touchscreen functions that can be hard to find. The available sources do not confirm U.S. pricing, so there is not enough evidence to call it a budget-priced luxury SUV or judge its value against rivals.
What MotorTrend found on the U.S.-spec 2026 Q3
Aaron Gold drove the U.S.-spec Q3 in San Luis Obispo, California, for a MotorTrend first drive published March 17, 2026. He describes the cabin as a substantial perceived upgrade over the outgoing model. The U.S. version reviewed has standard leather upholstery and tulipwood dash trim. Those are the reviewer’s observations and the vehicle’s reported equipment, not a claim that every buyer will find the interior equally upscale.
Powertrain and road-going setup
MotorTrend reports a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 255 hp and 273 lb-ft, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. All-wheel drive is standard on the U.S. model, according to the review. The outgoing Q3’s figures are given as 228 hp and 251 lb-ft, with an eight-speed torque-converter automatic. The new drivetrain therefore has higher stated output and a different transmission, but the first-drive evidence here does not include instrumented acceleration or fuel-economy results.
Cabin controls and front seats
Gold found the fixed stalks with small moving rockers unusual in appearance but normal to use. He considered the touchscreen attractive and manageable, while noting that desired functions can be buried in menus and that the system is not especially intuitive. His review says the U.S. front seats have less restrictive side bolsters than the European seats but do not have their extendable thigh bolsters. He found the cushions too short to provide adequate thigh support, even for shorter drivers.

Does the Q3 work for passengers and cargo?
The U.S.-spec review describes comfortable outboard rear seating and a sliding rear bench. Moving the bench changes reported cargo capacity from 25.0 to 29.0 cubic feet; the rear backrest folds in a 40/20/40 split. Rear passengers get air vents, individual temperature control, and two high-wattage USB ports as standard. MotorTrend also notes substantial plastic areas on the rear doors, a reminder that the improved front cabin does not make every interior surface feel equally premium.
Is the 2026 Q3 a budget-priced luxury SUV?
That conclusion is not supported by the available U.S. pricing evidence. No verified 2026 U.S. MSRP, trim pricing, or local dealer offer is established here, so buyers cannot use this review alone to determine whether the Q3 is inexpensive relative to its equipment or competitors. Check current local pricing and included equipment before comparing monthly payments or total ownership cost.

- Compare local trim prices and the equipment actually included, rather than relying on a headline price alone.
- Drive each vehicle to assess engine and transmission response and confirm the all-wheel-drive configuration for the specific trim.
- Spend time in the front seats, especially if thigh support matters to you, and check rear-seat comfort with intended passengers.
- Try common touchscreen tasks yourself, such as changing climate settings and locating frequently used controls.
- Compare cargo capacity and flexibility in the configurations you would use, including whether the rear seats slide or split-fold.
- Review warranty coverage and ownership terms alongside the purchase price.
Keep the European Q3 specifications separate
AUDi AG’s August 25, 2025 announcement describes the third-generation Q3 SUV and Sportback for Europe, where the announced lineup includes TFSI petrol, TDI diesel, quattro versions, and a 200-kW plug-in hybrid. MotorTrend says the U.S. launch vehicle has one engine and steel suspension; the European powertrain menu should not be assumed to be offered in the United States.
Audi’s European announcement quotes preliminary plug-in-hybrid electric range of up to 119 kilometers, determined under WLTP procedures. That is not a U.S. EPA range rating. Audi also lists European SUV cargo capacity at 488 liters with the rear seat in use and up to 1,386 liters with it folded; those figures use a different market and source context from MotorTrend’s U.S. cubic-foot figures and are not one directly comparable measurement series.

The same announcement gives a historical German starting price of €44,600 for the Q3 SUV TFSI 110 kW, with the Sportback TFSI 110 kW at €46,450 and the SUV e-hybrid at €49,300. These are German launch prices announced for October 2025, not U.S. MSRP or current retail offers. Audi’s European release also lists towing capacity of up to 2,100 kilograms for the European Q3; that figure should not be applied to the U.S. model without U.S.-specific confirmation.

The first drive makes the U.S. Q3 worth considering for shoppers drawn to its reported cabin upgrade, standard all-wheel drive, higher stated engine output than the outgoing model, and adjustable rear-seat layout. It is a less certain fit for buyers who need generous front-seat thigh support or prefer touchscreen controls that are easy to locate. Whether it represents good value remains a local-price question, not one this evidence can settle.
