The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) provides clear criteria for choosing sunscreen, but those general guidelines do not endorse specific brands. Use them to compare current product labels and match a formula to your needs.
What makes a sunscreen a sound choice?
The AAD recommends choosing sunscreen labeled broad spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, and water resistant. These are category-level selection criteria, not a ranking of products or a recommendation of any particular brand. See the AAD’s sunscreen-selection guidance.
- Broad spectrum: The label indicates protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
- SPF 30 or higher: SPF mainly indicates protection from UVB, the rays that cause sunburn. The AAD says SPF 30 filters 97% of UVB rays; no sunscreen filters 100%. This figure is from AAD guidance, which does not state a publication year for it. SPF is not a promise of complete protection.
- Water resistant: The label specifies either 40 or 80 minutes of water resistance. This does not mean the sunscreen stays effective indefinitely while swimming or sweating.
For help reading package claims, consult the AAD’s guide to sunscreen labels.
How to match the formula to your needs
Once a product meets the baseline label criteria, choose a format and formula you are likely to use consistently. The AAD discusses these considerations in its guidance on choosing the right sunscreen.
#1 Best Overall
- CLEAR SUNSCREEN FOR FACE: This lightweight face sunscreen with transparent Zinc Oxide provides broad spectrum SPF 46 protection and helps protect normal and sensitive skin types from UVA and UVB damage without leaving white cast residue behind
- FOR NORMAL, ACNE-PRONE, AND SENSITIVE SKIN TYPES: UV Clear uses an oil-free, non-comedogenic formula that’s designed for daily use on normal, oily, rosacea, and acne-prone skin so you get effective daily sun protection without feeling greasy
- SUITABLE FOR HYPERPIGMENTED SKIN: Contains Niacinamide which helps to visibly improve skin tone and reduce the appearance of discoloration and blemishes on the skin
- CONVENIENT TRAVEL SIZE SUNSCREEN: This face sunscreen is TSA approved and comes in a convenient travel-size pump bottle that easily fits in handbags, beach bags, and carry on luggage so you can protect your skin at home, work, or on the go
- SUITABLE FOR ALL SKIN TYPES: UV Clear comes in both tinted and untinted versions that support a wide range of skin types and complexions; it’s a dermatologist recommended sunscreen that’s fragrance-free, paraben-free, sensitivity-free, and non-comedogenic
- Sensitive skin: Look for products labeled “sensitive skin.” The AAD describes mineral active ingredients zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as an option.
- Oily skin: Look for “non-comedogenic” or “won’t clog pores” on the label. Those terms are selection clues, not a guarantee that a product will suit everyone.
- Visible cast or darker skin tones: A tinted sunscreen may be worth considering. Tint does not replace the need for broad-spectrum protection, SPF 30 or higher, and water resistance.
- Around the eyes: The AAD discusses sunscreen sticks as a format for this area.
These considerations can narrow a search, but they do not establish that any specific product is best for a particular person. Check the current label, including the active ingredients and water-resistance duration.
How to use sunscreen effectively
Apply sunscreen before going outdoors. Reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating, following the product label. The AAD’s instructions are in its application guide. Pair sunscreen with shade and sun-protective clothing, as recommended in the AAD’s Practice Safe Sun guidance.
Rank #2
- BROAD SPECTRUM UVA/UVB PROTECTION: This hydrating face sunscreen with transparent Zinc Oxide provides broad spectrum SPF 40 protection and helps protect dry, combination, and normal skin types from UVA/UVB rays without leaving white cast residue behind
- IDEAL FOR LIGHT SKIN TONES: Can be worn alone or under makeup and is the perfect facial sunscreen for daily commutes and year-round sun protection; use it as part of your daily morning skin care routine after cleansing and moisturizing
- HYDRATES WITH HYALURONIC ACID: Infused with Hyaluronic Acid, this hydrating sunscreen moisturizer helps skin retain moisture for a softer feel and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by restoring suppleness
- CONVENIENT TRAVEL SIZE SUNSCREEN: This face sunscreen is TSA approved and comes in a convenient travel-size pump bottle that easily fits in handbags, beach bags, and carry on luggage so you can protect your skin at home, work, or on the go
- SUITABLE FOR ALL SKIN TYPES: UV Daily comes in both tinted and untinted versions that support a wide range of skin types and complexions; it’s a dermatologist recommended sunscreen that’s fragrance-free, paraben-free, sensitivity-free, and non-comedogenic
For children younger than six months, the AAD guidance cited here recommends shade and protective clothing rather than sunscreen as the default. Ask a clinician about individual concerns.
Why this is not a ranked list of nine products
A list titled “the nine best dermatologist-recommended sunscreens” implies that identifiable dermatologists recommended those products, or that a transparent comparison established a ranking. The available AAD and FDA sources support general selection criteria, but do not establish nine current product-specific recommendations, named dermatologist endorsements, or a validated comparative test. The AAD’s institutional guidance should not be presented as endorsement of brands.
Rank #3
- This travel size sunscreen is non-sealed
- SPF 100 sunscreen for face and body, specifically formulated to help protect skin that burns easily.
- Oxybenzone and Octinoxate-free sunscreen for body & face helps protect sun-sensitive skin and skin prone to burning from UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays with our highest SPF level of 100
- Body & face sunscreen blends easily without leaving a white cast behind. Facial sunscreen is wearable under makeup. Water resistant up to 80 minutes
- This body sunscreen is formulated and rigorously tested for skin tolerance, even on sensitive skin.
For a product list to support that claim, each item would need a current U.S. label and availability check, plus an attributable product-specific recommendation. Without those, calling individual sunscreens “dermatologist-recommended” or “best” would go beyond the evidence. A more defensible shopping search is for a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, then comparing its current label against your needs.

The FDA’s sunscreen page reports that bemotrizinol was added as a permitted sunscreen active in June 2026 and that a final administrative order dated September 10, 2026 removed PABA and trolamine salicylate from the sunscreen OTC monograph. Those regulatory updates do not establish that a particular product is available, recommended by a dermatologist, or endorsed by the FDA. See the FDA’s sunscreen guidance.
