IKEA has its own peer-to-peer marketplace for second-hand IKEA products, where members can list items, connect with local buyers and arrange a handoff. It began as a pilot in Madrid and Oslo in 2024 and has since expanded to additional markets. The service puts IKEA into the broader resale space associated with eBay and Craigslist, but available information does not establish a like-for-like feature comparison or show that it has displaced either platform.
What IKEA’s marketplace is—and what it is not
IKEA’s second-hand marketplace is a digital service for people to buy and sell used IKEA goods directly to one another. Ingka Group, the IKEA retailer that announced the pilot on 27 August 2024, said the initial test was in Madrid and Oslo. IKEA’s product-focused listing tools are intended to make it easier to identify merchandise and set a price; buyers and sellers still arrange the local exchange themselves.
It is not the same as IKEA Buy Back, where IKEA buys eligible goods from a customer, or IKEA’s As-Is/Reuse stock, which may include returns, display pieces, discontinued products and items IKEA has bought back. These are distinct routes for buying or reselling used goods, with different inventories and transaction arrangements.
Where the marketplace is available
Availability is market-specific and continues to change. Ingka Group’s 26 January 2026 announcement said the service had expanded to Sweden, following launches in Spain, Norway, Portugal and Poland. IKEA UK marketplace terms effective 16 September 2026 provide evidence of a UK marketplace as well. Check the IKEA marketplace page and terms for your country before listing or buying; the rollout and local rules should not be assumed to be identical everywhere.

How buying and selling work
For sellers
IKEA describes a listing process built around its own products: take a photo, use prefilled product information and suggested pricing, then set the asking price. The seller and buyer arrange pickup directly. Some IKEA market materials describe payout by bank transfer or an IKEA refund card with an additional 15% value, but payout choices vary by market; check the local terms rather than assuming that option is available where you live.
For buyers
Buyers browse and reserve a local item, then coordinate the handoff with the seller. IKEA marketplace pages describe payment being held until the buyer accepts the item. The precise payment and protection process depends on the country’s terms, so review those terms before confirming a purchase.

Pickup and personal information
Pickup is arranged between the people in the transaction, not delivered as a standard IKEA retail order. IKEA Portugal’s seller instructions say the seller’s exact home address is not shown publicly and allow a public or IKEA location to be chosen for pickup. That is Portugal-specific guidance, not a universal guarantee about address visibility or meeting arrangements. Agree on a safe, practical handoff and inspect the item before accepting it.
Listings, eligibility and buyer protection
The marketplace is intended for IKEA products, but detailed listing rules differ locally. IKEA’s pages describe restrictions that can include food, mattresses and kitchen appliances; one page also excludes modified items, recalled products and non-IKEA goods. The Swedish page says listings are reviewed before publication. Check your local marketplace terms for the actual exclusions and review process.

Buyer protection is limited, not a blanket IKEA certification of every listing. IKEA Sweden says a buyer may be able to cancel and receive a refund when an item is significantly misdescribed, while also stating that IKEA does not guarantee a listing’s existence, quality, authenticity or accuracy. Check the applicable local policy and examine the item at handoff rather than treating a listing as a quality guarantee.
Fees depend on country and date
Do not assume one worldwide buyer-fee policy. IKEA UK’s Marketplace Buyer Protection policy, effective 16 September 2026, says buyers pay a mandatory 5% fee on paid marketplace purchases. IKEA Portugal’s marketplace page says buyer protection is free through 31 August 2026 and normally costs 5% of the purchase price. Those are separate market terms and the Portugal waiver’s stated end date has passed; consult the current local checkout and policy before relying on a fee or waiver.

How IKEA’s marketplace compares with eBay and Craigslist
The meaningful distinction established by IKEA’s materials is scope: IKEA’s marketplace is designed around used IKEA goods, with product information and price suggestions tailored to that merchandise and local pickup arranged by the parties. The materials do not establish current eBay or Craigslist rules, fees, geographic coverage or buyer protections, so a detailed platform-by-platform comparison would require checking those services’ current local terms separately. Nor do the available company announcements demonstrate that IKEA has displaced either platform.
What IKEA says about the resale market
Ingka Group’s announcements have cited estimates and targets, which should be read as company statements rather than independent measurements. In its 2024 pilot announcement, Ingka attributed to CEO Jesper Brodin a claim that IKEA represented 10% of the second-hand home-furnishing market, alongside a projection of 6.4% annual growth for the global second-hand furniture market in 2024. The announcement did not provide the underlying study or methodology.

In 2026, Ingka cited a 7% projected annual growth rate for the global second-hand furniture market, with a projected value of USD 43 billion by 2030. The same release said IKEA products accounted for about 9% of the second-hand market in Europe and 4% globally, and reported that 52% of younger people regularly bought second-hand furniture or household items mainly to save money, citing an Ingka Group and GlobeScan study. These later figures use different wording and dates from the 2024 claims; they are not directly interchangeable. Ingka also named 170,000 listings as a 2026 milestone target, not a reported result.
