If you received a 700Credit data-breach notice, treat it as a warning that your personal information may have been copied without authorization. The notice lists Social Security numbers, names, addresses and dates of birth among the information involved. The settlement claim deadline shown on the official site—September 22, 2026—had passed as of October 4, 2026, and the proposed settlement was still awaiting a court decision.
What happened in the 700Credit breach?
700Credit provides services that help auto dealerships handle consumer financing, including credit reports and credit checks. The Michigan Attorney General said information was collected through dealerships between May and October 2025. 700Credit reported detecting suspicious activity in its web application around October 25, 2025; its investigation found that certain records linked to dealership customers had been copied without authorization. Michigan Attorney General’s alert and the 700Credit notice describe the incident.
The Michigan Attorney General reported that nearly 6 million people nationwide were affected, including more than 160,000 Michiganders. “Nearly 6 million” is the agency’s stated national figure; it does not provide a more exact total. The state alert lists names, addresses, Social Security numbers and dates of birth. The particular information involved may differ from person to person. The reviewed official sources do not identify credit-card numbers as exposed.
What should you do if you received a 700Credit letter?
Use the notice as a reason to take practical precautions, not as proof that anyone has already used your identity. The 700Credit notice said: “At this time, we have no indication that your information was subject to actual or attempted misuse as a result of this incident and are providing this notice out of an abundance of caution.” That describes what the company knew when it issued the notice; it cannot rule out future misuse. The notice and Michigan’s guidance recommend these steps:

- Watch for phishing. Be cautious with unexpected calls, texts or emails that invoke the breach, ask for passwords or verification codes, or urge you to click a link. Contact a company using contact details you already trust rather than replying to a suspicious message.
- Secure important accounts. Change reused or weak passwords and enable multifactor authentication where available, especially on financial and email accounts.
- Check your credit reports. Michigan’s Attorney General points consumers to AnnualCreditReport.com, where free weekly reports are available. Look for accounts or inquiries you do not recognize.
- Consider a credit freeze or fraud alert. Both are free, according to the notice. A freeze restricts a credit bureau from releasing your report without your authorization; it can also delay or interfere with applying for a loan, mortgage or other credit. A fraud alert instead asks creditors reviewing your file to take steps to verify your identity. Choose based on your circumstances rather than assuming a freeze is required. The notice attachment explains these protections.
If you spot suspected identity theft
Contact the financial institution involved, review your reports and consider placing a freeze. Michigan’s alert also recommends filing an FTC Identity Theft Report or a police report when appropriate. The state’s identity-theft guidance outlines these actions.
Is the 700Credit settlement real, and can you still claim?
The settlement administrator’s website identifies the case as In re 700Credit Data Security Litigation, Case No. 25-cv-13747, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, Southern Division. It describes a proposed $17.5 million settlement for eligible people who received a breach notice by email or postcard in July or August 2026, subject to the settlement terms and exclusions. The administrator listed September 22, 2026 as the claim deadline. That date had passed by October 4, 2026, so check the official settlement website for any later extension or update before assuming no further claim option exists.

The site listed two possible cash benefits: reimbursement of documented losses related to the incident up to $2,500, or an estimated $50 flat payment. Either could be reduced pro rata, so neither amount is guaranteed. It also describes two years of credit monitoring for settlement-class members, but activation codes cannot be used unless the court approves the settlement and enters its order. The settlement site and its FAQ provide the terms.
As of October 4, 2026, the settlement remained proposed and subject to court approval. The site listed a final approval hearing for October 7, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. Eastern. Its FAQ says the case had not gone to trial, the court had not ruled for either side, and 700Credit denied wrongdoing and liability. Do not treat the proposed benefits as final or monitoring as active unless the administrator later confirms court approval. Check the administrator’s current notices for the outcome and any updated dates.

How to recognize a breach notice
The Michigan Attorney General quoted Dana Nessel urging recipients, “If you get a letter from 700Credit, don’t ignore it,” and recommending prompt steps to protect their information. The official alert is a useful reference if you are uncertain why a dealership-related company has your information. If you receive a settlement-related message, verify it through the administrator’s website rather than following an unsolicited link.
