The BMW M4 F82 is the first-generation M4 coupe. For U.S. shoppers, the model-year range covered by a recent buyer guide is 2015–2020, but equipment and availability can differ by market. The right used car is not automatically the most powerful or lowest-mileage example: compare its exact variant and equipment, service and ownership history, condition, and local asking prices before deciding what it is worth.
What the F82 designation covers
F82 identifies the M4 coupe. Do not confuse it with the F83 M4 convertible or the F80 M3 sedan; those models share some mechanical components, but they are not the coupe covered here. A secondary buyer guide describes the U.S. coupe model-year span as 2015–2020. Model-year range, launch timing, trim availability, and equipment may differ elsewhere, so verify a car against documentation for its market and model year. CarScout’s buyer guide provides the U.S. range; BMW M’s retrospective supplies historical variant context.
How the F82 variants differ
BMW’s retrospective describes the Competition version as available from 2016 and says it raised output by 14 kW (19 hp) to 331 kW (450 hp), made Adaptive M Suspension standard, and changed exhaust mapping. BMW dates the facelift to 2017, noting new LED rear lights and updated lighting details. These changes make the car’s model year and original specification relevant when comparing listings.
The CS and GTS are special editions, not merely ordinary option packages. BMW identifies the M4 CS as launching in 2017 and describes the 2016 M4 GTS as a performance-oriented technology carrier. A secondary guide lists base, Competition, CS, and GTS configurations, but figures beyond the BMW retrospective should be checked against the original specification sheet for the car’s market and model year. Do not compare horsepower figures across markets without confirming the measurement convention.

How to compare two cars
Use the individual car’s identity and condition, not its badge alone. Ask for the VIN, build or model year, market, transmission, and original equipment, then check the records and inspect the car. Compare the same kind of price—asking price with asking price, for example—and use local comparable listings where possible.
| Comparison point | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Variant and equipment | Confirm whether it is a base, Competition, CS, or GTS car, and verify installed equipment against the original specification for its market and model year. |
| Transmission and year | Record the transmission and build or model year; do not assume that cars with the same registration year have identical specifications. |
| History | Review service and ownership records, accident history, modifications, and any evidence of track use. |
| Condition | Inspect tires, brakes, suspension, bodywork, and the rest of the car rather than treating mileage as a substitute for condition. |
| Price basis | Compare the asking price with current local examples of the same variant and similar mileage and condition. Distinguish listings from completed sales and valuation estimates. |
What the available price figures mean
There is no reliable single price for “an F82 M4”: condition, mileage, location, and variant all matter. The available sources do not establish authoritative, current, condition-adjusted price bands across the standard, Competition, CS, and GTS cars. A buyer guide’s 2026 special-edition estimates do not provide a sufficiently transparent, comparable dataset by mileage and condition to serve as a general price schedule. Kelley Blue Book’s 2020 M4 Coupe page reported a $47,100 current resale estimate and a $46,100 trade-in estimate when accessed in October 2026. Those are model-year-page valuation estimates—not guaranteed asking prices, completed-sale prices, or quotes for every F82 variant. Kelley Blue Book notes that values depend on mileage, condition, location, and other factors; its 2017 M4 Coupe valuation page is another model-year-specific reference. Treat any estimate as a benchmark, then compare it with local cars of similar specification and condition.

What to check before buying
- Check recalls by VIN. Get the 17-character VIN and use NHTSA’s vehicle safety resources to look up recall information. NHTSA says buyers can also search by license plate. Confirm applicability and whether required repairs have been completed for the specific car.
- Read the records. Review service history, ownership, accident history, modifications, and any evidence of track use. An advertisement’s description is not proof of condition.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Use a BMW/M specialist familiar with the S55-powered car. Ask for an assessment of mechanical condition and wear, including tires, brakes, suspension, and bodywork. The cited sources do not establish a definitive F82-specific failure rate, so avoid treating a particular defect as inevitable.
- Use a scan as an aid, not a verdict. A general OBD-II scan may reveal stored fault codes, but scan depth and compatibility vary. A clear scan does not establish that the car is mechanically sound and does not replace a specialist inspection.
- Judge value against the exact car. Weigh its verified specification and condition against comparable local cars. A higher trim or lower odometer reading by itself does not prove better value.
Sources and scope
BMW M’s retrospective supports the historical Competition, facelift, CS, and GTS details above. The U.S. model-year range and secondary configuration overview come from CarScout’s buyer guide, dated July 5, 2026. The price examples are Kelley Blue Book valuation estimates accessed in October 2026, and recall lookup guidance comes from NHTSA. Availability, equipment, and specifications can vary by market; confirm them for the car being considered.
