Yes. Joann’s retail stores closed permanently in 2025 after the craft retailer’s second Chapter 11 bankruptcy led to an asset sale and a wind-down with going-out-of-business sales at every location. The bankruptcy estate continued to have court activity in 2026, but that does not mean Joann stores reopened.
What happened to Joann after its second bankruptcy filing?
Joann filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy again in January 2025, less than nine months after emerging from its first bankruptcy case. The first case restructured the company’s balance sheet while largely leaving its operations intact, according to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court’s June 11, 2026 opinion.
On February 12, 2025, Joann asked the court to authorize store-closing sales at a subset of underperforming locations. At that time, the company described a footprint of approximately 800 stores across 49 states. That filing was not the final scale of the closures: after an auction, GA Group and Joann’s term lenders were selected to acquire substantially all of the company’s assets, and Joann announced a wind-down with going-out-of-business sales at every store.
Joann said in a statement reproduced by the Associated Press: “We are committed to working constructively with the winning bidder to ensure an orderly wind-down of operations that minimizes the impact on all our stakeholders.” The AP reported the wind-down on February 24, 2025, noting the company had been in business for more than 80 years.

Why does Joann’s bankruptcy docket still show activity?
A store closure and the end of a bankruptcy estate are different things. Retail operations can stop while the estate continues work involving claims, litigation, asset matters and administration. The court confirmed Joann’s plan in July 2025, and it became effective less than a week later.
An Inforuptcy docket index accessed October 4, 2026, showed post-confirmation activity, including a report for the quarter ending June 30, 2026, and docket entries through September 25, 2026. That activity reflects continuing estate administration; it is not evidence that stores are operating or will reopen. The index is a secondary docket source, not a complete legal-status opinion.

Can shoppers still find Joann brands?
Michaels acquired Joann intellectual property and selected private brands, including Big Twist yarn. That means some Joann-associated brands may continue under new ownership, but it does not mean Joann stores survived. The acquisition alone does not establish whether any particular product is currently in stock, so check Michaels’ current listings before making a trip or placing an order.
