How Much Should You Tip Your Uber Driver? A U.S. Guide

A practical U.S. Uber tipping guide: use about 15% as an etiquette-based rule of thumb, while remembering that tipping is optional and Uber does not set a required amount.

For a routine Uber ride in the United States, about 15% of the fare—or a few dollars on a short, inexpensive trip—is a reasonable rule of thumb. That is an etiquette-based suggestion, not an Uber requirement: tipping is optional, and you can tip more for extra help such as handling luggage.

How much is a reasonable Uber tip?

The Emily Post Institute’s general taxi guidance suggests tipping 15–20% of the fare, with a $1 minimum. That guidance is for taxi rides, not Uber specifically. Since Uber’s U.S. rider guidance does not prescribe a percentage, using about 15% as a ride-hailing rule of thumb is a practical adaptation—not an official Uber standard. These are simple calculations, not amounts set by Uber. For a very short, inexpensive ride, a modest flat tip can be more practical than calculating a percentage that comes out unusually small. Consider the fare, the length of the ride, any extra assistance, and local tipping customs.

Do you have to tip an Uber driver?

No. Uber says tipping is optional, and its initial ride charge does not include a gratuity. A tip is a choice, not a condition of receiving a ride or a payment owed for an ordinary trip. Uber Help on tipping and ride charges.

Does the driver receive the full in-app tip?

According to Uber’s U.S. rider guidance, 100% of an in-app tip goes to the driver; Uber says it charges no service fee on tips. Uber’s U.S. tipping guidance.

How can you tip, and how long do you have?

Uber lists the app, cash, riders.uber.com, and the emailed trip receipt as ways to tip. In the app, the prompt appears after you rate the ride; you can also add a tip later through trip history. Uber’s U.S. rider page allows tips for up to 30 days after the trip, including through the app, rider website, or emailed receipt. Availability may vary by market and payment arrangement. What if the ride is for work?

Check your employer’s expense policy before tipping on a business trip. Uber says a company expense policy or trip limit may result in the tip being charged to your personal account, and business vouchers cover the ride price but not driver tips. The charge depends on the applicable policy and payment arrangement. Uber Help on tipping.

Does this advice apply outside the United States?

No single U.S. benchmark should be treated as a worldwide rule. Tipping customs and Uber payment options vary by country, so check the local guidance in the app or on Uber’s local help pages.
