For a U.S. buyer shopping used, a $25,000 ceiling can put quick, engaging cars within reach—but it does not guarantee that a particular year, trim, or well-maintained example will fit the budget. Edmunds’ feature republished by the Associated Press on June 10, 2026 highlights five candidates; the ten below are an expanded editorial shortlist, not ten verified current bargains. Check local listings and the vehicle’s condition before deciding what the budget buys.

The right pick depends on more than horsepower: a light roadster can feel lively without a huge engine, while a hatchback may be the better performance car if you need everyday space. The figures and model-year guidance below are tied to the cited sources; used-car prices vary with mileage, trim, condition, title history, and local market.

How to choose a performance car under $25,000

Start with how you will use the car, then narrow by driving character and condition. Power figures help describe a car, but they do not tell you how it will feel on a winding road, whether it can carry passengers, or whether a specific used example is a sound purchase.

  • Choose your use case: A two-seat convertible, small coupe, and four-door hatchback serve different needs.
  • Compare the whole driving experience: Handling, steering, gearing, and weight matter alongside acceleration. In an Edmunds comparison of specific 2024 models and trims, the Miata, BRZ tS, and Elantra N each recorded 0–60 mph in 6.4 seconds, while the Civic Si recorded 7.7 seconds. The test also distinguished the cars through autocross and handling observations; those results are not predictions for older used examples. Edmunds’ comparison
  • Check the exact year and equipment: Output and features can vary within a model line.
  • Assess the individual car: Review its title and maintenance history, and have its condition assessed before purchase. A price under the cap does not establish that it is mechanically sound.

The strongest current recommendation feature reviewed, from Edmunds republished by AP, covers five models rather than ten. The list below combines those recommendations with additional candidates identified in an older MotorTrend list and a 2026 iSeeCars ranking. Those additional sources do not establish that every model or trim is currently available under $25,000 in your area.

Ten used-car candidates to consider

1. BMW 2 Series (2015–2018)

Look at the six-cylinder M235i and M240i if quick acceleration and a more premium, long-distance-friendly coupe are priorities. The AP-republished Edmunds feature cites 320 hp for the M235i and up to 335 hp in later 2017–2018 M240i versions. Coupes are more attainable under the budget than convertibles or higher-performance later trims, though actual listings depend on condition and market.

2. Mazda MX-5 Miata (2019–2021)

The 2019–2021 Miata makes 181 hp, according to the Edmunds feature republished by AP. Its appeal is a light, two-seat convertible with precise steering and predictable handling rather than a large power figure. The feature recommends 2019-and-newer examples for the power increase and telescoping steering wheel, and identifies the Club trim’s mechanical enhancements as a draw. Taller drivers may find the cabin cramped. Edmunds describes the current Miata as “a milestone for light, fun convertibles.”

Used Cars
  • A brash, fast-talking used car salesman wants to leave the business world and enter politics. First, though, he must help his boss save his used car lot from being taken over by his malicious and unscrupulous brother, who runs a rival used car lot directly across the highway.

3. Subaru BRZ (2017–2020)

The BRZ is a small, rear-wheel-drive coupe co-designed with the Toyota 86. Post-2017 versions make up to 205 hp and benefit from improved gearing and suspension tuning, according to the AP-republished Edmunds feature. Its rear seats are more useful for cargo than for carrying adults. A BRZ Performance package adds brake and suspension upgrades; check the specific car’s equipment.

4. Toyota 86 (2017–2020)

The Toyota 86 shares the BRZ’s co-developed coupe concept and post-2017 improvement guidance: up to 205 hp, revised gearing, and suspension tuning. The AP-republished Edmunds feature says the 86 is often slightly cheaper than the BRZ, but that is not a guarantee for a particular listing. Compare year, condition, equipment, and service history rather than assuming one badge is always the better buy.

5. Volkswagen Golf GTI (2015–2019)

The GTI pairs entertaining handling with a four-door hatchback, making it a practical option for someone who wants performance without giving up everyday utility. The AP-republished Edmunds feature cites up to 228 hp across the 2015–2019 range, depending on year and equipment. Transmission choices also vary by model year, so check the listing and vehicle details if you have a manual or automatic preference.

6. Chevrolet Corvette (2008 and newer)

The Edmunds feature republished by AP advises focusing on 2008-and-newer Corvettes for more power and an improved interior, and recommends finding an example with maintenance records. Coupes are easier to find under $25,000 than convertibles or later Grand Sport trims. Treat the budget as a search limit, not a reason to overlook service history or condition.

7. Honda Civic Si

The Civic Si appears among the additional candidates in MotorTrend’s older broad list. It offers a performance-oriented alternative in a compact-car format, but that old list’s historical retail estimates do not demonstrate present-day prices or availability. Evaluate current local examples individually, and confirm the model year, equipment, and condition before treating one as a sub-$25,000 option.

8. Ford Focus ST

MotorTrend’s older list also includes the Focus ST, another candidate for shoppers who want a compact performance car. The source is useful as a model suggestion, not as evidence of current pricing. Check listings in your market and weigh the specific car’s maintenance history and condition before comparing it with newer or better-documented alternatives.

9. Honda S2000

The S2000 appears on MotorTrend’s older list as a performance-car candidate. Its inclusion does not establish that a suitable example is currently available below $25,000; historical fair-retail figures are not current market data. If considering one, compare actual local listings and account for the condition and history of the particular car.

10. Hyundai Veloster N

The 2026 iSeeCars ranking lists the Veloster N among its sports-car options under $25,000. Ranking inclusion is not a guarantee that a matching listing is available at that price in every market. Use it as a lead for a local search, then confirm the asking price, year, trim, and condition of the individual car.

Match the shortlist to your priorities

Priority Models to investigate What to weigh
Open-air driving and light, precise handling Mazda MX-5 Miata Two seats and a cabin that may feel cramped to taller drivers; the 2019–2021 versions in the cited feature make 181 hp.
Small-coupe involvement Subaru BRZ, Toyota 86 Post-2017 models are cited at up to 205 hp; rear seats are better suited to cargo than adult passengers.
Hatchback practicality Volkswagen Golf GTI, Ford Focus ST GTI output varies by year and equipment; verify the transmission and trim on any listing. Current pricing for either model is not established by the older candidate list.
Higher cited power in a coupe BMW M235i/M240i, Chevrolet Corvette BMW cited output spans 320–335 hp across the named versions; Corvette guidance favors 2008-and-newer models and maintenance records. Actual under-budget availability varies.
Compact-car performance alternatives Honda Civic Si, Hyundai Veloster N The Civic Si is an older-list candidate; the Veloster N appears in a 2026 ranking. Neither source guarantees local availability below the cap.

What the price cap can—and cannot—tell you

There is no market-wide price statistic in the sources that establishes how many examples of these cars are currently available below $25,000. MotorTrend’s older fair-retail figures are not current-price evidence, and a ranking or editorial recommendation is not a live inventory check. Search for the exact year, trim, transmission, and body style you want in your area, then compare listings with similar mileage and history.

Keep room in your budget for the costs of ownership and any work identified during inspection. A low asking price is not a substitute for maintenance records, a clean and accurate vehicle history, or an independent assessment of the specific car.
