Where the $18 monthly figure came from
In 2022, BMW made activation of heated seats available through a digital store in some markets. The roughly $18 monthly price cited in coverage was tied to South Korea; reports described different prices and subscription periods elsewhere. The central distinction is between owning a car with the necessary heating hardware and having software access to use it. The reported subscription concerned activation in markets where BMW offered it. It did not mean every BMW owner was charged, nor that every BMW had heated-seat hardware.
What BMW said about U.S. cars
BMW North America said factory-ordered heated seats in the U.S. would remain unaffected by Functions on Demand. In a statement reproduced by BMWBLOG, the company said: “Options like heated seats are ordered on over 90% of the BMW’s sold in the USA,” a spokesman said in an email to CBS MoneyWatch. That is BMW’s stated figure for U.S. sales, not a claim about other markets. BMWBLOG

BMW described U.S. Functions on Demand as software-based features using data and sensors from hardware already installed in certain vehicles. Its examples were BMW Drive Recorder and BMW Remote Engine Start. The company said customers could test or purchase such functions for a term or for the vehicle’s life, and characterized the service as a digital aftersales option that did not change features selected at purchase. BMW later stopped the heated-seat subscription
