HAWK, a Solana memecoin associated with Haliey Welch, launched on December 4, 2024. Its value rose sharply and then fell; investors sued later that month, alleging federal securities-law violations. Those allegations have not been established as court findings by the sources cited here, and the widely reported $491 million peak was a market-cap figure—not a verified total of money raised or investor losses.

What happened to the Hawk Tuah coin?

Welch became widely known in June 2024 after the viral “Hawk Tuah” phrase and video, according to TRM Labs’ account. On December 4, HAWK launched on Solana. The investors’ complaint states that the token officially launched at 22:00 UTC that day; TRM Labs also identifies December 4 as the launch date.

The token’s value rose soon after launch and then dropped sharply. Wolf Popper LLP, a firm representing plaintiffs, reported that HAWK’s market capitalization reached $491 million. That figure describes the token’s reported market value at a point in time. It does not establish how much money the project received, how much investors lost, or how much anyone realized by selling.

Why did the HAWK coin crash?

The available sources establish that HAWK’s price rose and then fell, but they do not establish a definitive cause for the decline. Nor do they independently resolve who controlled particular wallets, whether particular parties sold tokens, or what anyone intended. A sharp fall alone does not prove fraud or a “rug pull.”

The competing public accounts are different kinds of evidence:

  • What the lawsuit alleges: The complaint describes HAWK’s marketing and launch and alleges that defendants offered and sold the token without proper securities registration. These are plaintiffs’ claims, not judicial findings. The complaint is a primary pleading; it does not prove the claims it contains.
  • What the project account said: On December 5, 2024, The Block reported that OverHere said, “Haliey’s Team has sold absolutely no tokens whatsover.” This is OverHere’s denial, not independent proof of wallet activity. The Block’s report preserves the statement’s original spelling.
  • What Welch said: In a statement quoted by The Atlantic in December 2024, Welch said she was cooperating with lawyers representing impacted individuals and wanted to help uncover the truth and hold responsible parties accountable. That statement describes her stated cooperation; it does not settle the disputed allegations. The Atlantic’s December 27 account quotes her statement.
  • What blockchain analysis establishes here: TRM Labs identifies the launch as taking place on Solana and provides launch context. Its cited account does not resolve every disputed question about token control, sales, or intent.

Was Haliey Welch sued over the HAWK coin?

Investors filed a complaint on December 19, 2024, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, alleging federal securities-law violations related to the offer and sale of HAWK. Wolf Popper’s HAWK case page and filing announcement describe the suit from plaintiffs’ counsel’s perspective. A complaint begins a legal case; it is not a finding that the defendants broke the law.

The sources cited here do not establish a court finding of a securities-law violation, fraud, insider trading, or a rug pull. They also do not establish the lawsuit’s current procedural status or a final disposition. Claims that it was settled, dismissed, or resulted in liability therefore cannot be supported by these sources.

What investors should take from the story

For anyone assessing a volatile token, a headline market-cap figure is not the same as cash raised, money available to sell at that valuation, or verified losses. Likewise, a complaint and a project-side denial are competing statements, not substitutes for court findings or independently verified transaction evidence. The HAWK episode illustrates why those distinctions matter when a token’s market price moves rapidly and legal claims follow.
