AMD announced in August 2010 that it would retire the ATI brand, but the change was gradual: new consumer graphics products became AMD Radeon in October 2010, while new professional graphics products moved to AMD branding in January 2011. Products already launched kept their ATI names.

When did ATI Radeon become AMD Radeon?

AMD announced its plan to put AMD branding on graphics products on August 30, 2010. The company’s 2010 Form 10-K later recorded the implementation date: new consumer graphics products transitioned from ATI Radeon to AMD Radeon in October 2010. The filing’s description of the rollout is available in AMD’s 2010 annual report; the announcement was reported by PCWorld on August 30, 2010.

Did existing ATI Radeon cards lose the ATI name?

No. AMD’s filing says consumer graphics products launched before the transition retained the ATI Radeon brand. The change applied to new products, not as a retroactive renaming of every card already on the market.

What happened to AMD’s professional graphics brands?

The transition for new professional graphics products came later, in January 2011. Before the change, AMD identified ATI FirePro, ATI FireGL, and ATI FireMV as professional graphics brands. Products already launched kept those names; new professional products moved to AMD branding, according to AMD’s 2010 Form 10-K.

Why did AMD retire ATI?

The cited announcement described AMD’s plan to place its own brand on graphics products. AMD spokesman Drew Erskine told PCWorld, “The change in brand name won’t affect the company’s graphics product offerings or plans.” That was AMD’s stated expectation about products and plans, not evidence that the rebrand had no effect on sales, brand recognition, or customer behavior.

How did AMD come to own ATI?

AMD completed its acquisition of ATI in October 2006, in a transaction AMD valued at approximately $5.4 billion. The completion and valuation are stated in AMD’s SEC-filed acquisition announcement. The acquisition preceded the brand change by several years; its price does not establish whether the later rebrand succeeded.
