For U.S. shoppers, the safest beauty-shopping app is not simply the one with the most reviews or the easiest-looking return button. Check who sells the item, what the app says about authenticity, whether opened products can be returned, how the refund works, and where an order bought through a marketplace must be sent back. Sephora, Ulta Beauty, and Amazon each have different rules—and no retailer policy independently verifies every individual product.
Start with the seller, not the app’s star rating
Beauty products may be sold by the retailer whose app you are using, by the brand itself, or by a third-party marketplace seller. Find the named seller on the product listing and order page, then check who handles fulfillment, returns, and customer support. A familiar app does not necessarily mean the retailer itself is the seller.

Reviews and ratings can help you assess a listing, but they are not proof that a product is genuine. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that ratings may be fake or misleading and recommends checking seller identity and contact information, as well as recent reviews from more than one source. Read the listing carefully, including product details and return terms; an unusually low price for an expensive item may be a warning sign. The FTC’s marketplace guidance also recommends checking what help the platform provides if something goes wrong and whether its protections cover that seller and item.
Compare the return terms that matter for beauty
Before ordering, look for the policy attached to the actual seller and purchase channel—not just a general returns page. These details determine whether an easy return is genuinely available:

- Window and condition: Note the deadline and whether the policy accepts only unopened products or also new, gently used, or opened items.
- Return route: Check whether you can return by mail, in a store, or only through the marketplace where you placed the order.
- Refund method: Confirm whether the money goes back to your original payment method or is issued as store credit. Check for return shipping charges and processing time.
- Proof and exceptions: See whether you need a receipt, order record, or other proof of purchase, and whether the product is final sale.
- Support and deadlines: Identify who to contact—the retailer, brand, or marketplace—and keep a record of the return deadline and any support conversation.
Marketplace protections differ, and some platforms leave disputes, returns, refunds, or delivery issues largely to buyers and sellers. Keep payment and communication on the platform so you do not give up the protections tied to that purchase. The FTC advises using safer payment methods and checking fees and deadlines before buying.

The following U.S. policy details were current as of October 4, 2026. Policies can change; confirm the terms shown for your order before you buy. A retailer’s stated policy describes what the company says it does, not an independent audit of every item or return.

Choose the app that fits your purchase and return needs
If you want the option to return gently used beauty products
Sephora’s general U.S. policy is the clearest of these three for a shopper who may need to return a new or gently used item, subject to its deadline, proof-of-purchase, validation, and channel rules. Confirm that the particular item is eligible and that the procedure matches how you plan to buy it.
If you are ordering through a delivery or social-shopping marketplace
Check the marketplace-specific instructions before placing the order. Ulta’s published terms show why: DoorDash and Instacart purchases have an in-store return route and merchandise-credit refund, while TikTok Shop orders must be returned through TikTok. Do not assume that a retailer’s own store will accept an order made on another platform.

If you are considering a marketplace listing
Amazon prohibits counterfeit sales, but that prohibition is not the same as item-level authentication. Evaluate the named seller and listing, understand the return and dispute process, and keep the transaction on-platform. The available policy statements do not establish a comparable counterfeit rate for Amazon, Sephora, or Ulta, so they cannot support a ranking of these services by counterfeit incidence.

What to do if a product seems fake or an order goes wrong
- Save the records: Keep the listing, seller name, receipt, order confirmation, packaging, and relevant messages. Note the return or dispute deadline.
- Contact the right party: For a retailer-sold order, start with that retailer’s support. For a third-party marketplace purchase, use the marketplace’s on-platform order or dispute process and check whether its protection covers the seller and item.
- Follow the stated return route: Use the retailer or marketplace’s instructions for that purchase channel. Keep proof of drop-off or shipment if returning by mail.
- Escalate if needed: If the seller or platform does not resolve the issue, review the FTC’s guidance on marketplace problems and contact your payment provider about available dispute options.
