DuPont Photomasks announced in May 2001 that it planned to close its Hamilton, Scotland, manufacturing facility by May 31, citing delayed or cancelled customer plans for new semiconductor fabs and a UK photomask market it considered too small to support a dedicated site. The announcement affected about 36 employees, according to EDN’s report published May 11, 2001.
What DuPont announced
The planned closure concerned DuPont Photomasks’ manufacturing facility in Hamilton, Scotland. The company said it would relocate the equipment to ten of its other existing manufacturing facilities. EDN reported that about 36 employees would be affected.
DuPont said moving production would not affect customer deliveries. That was the company’s assurance at the time; EDN’s report does not independently verify the delivery outcome or establish whether the plant closed on the planned date.
Why the company said the site was no longer justified
DuPont linked the decision to a weakening outlook for UK chip production and demand for photomasks. Peter Kirlin, then chairman and chief executive officer, said that since the facility opened in 1997, several customers’ plans for new semiconductor fabs had been “pushed out, delayed or cancelled.” This describes the company’s stated rationale, not an independently measured trend in the number of UK fabs.

Kirlin also said the UK represented less than 10 percent of the total European photomask market. That was DuPont’s figure as reported by EDN in 2001, not a current market-share estimate. The company said it could serve the European market more cost-effectively from its three larger facilities in France and Germany, with the aim of improving productivity and profitability.
Local facility versus regional production
| Issue | DuPont’s stated position in 2001 |
|---|---|
| UK demand | The company described the UK photomask market as less than 10 percent of the total European market, citing its own assessment reported by EDN. |
| Production footprint | It planned to move equipment from Hamilton to ten existing facilities and said its larger facilities in France and Germany could serve the European market more cost-effectively. |
| Customer deliveries | The company said deliveries would not be affected; the report does not verify what happened afterward. |
The announcement therefore presented the closure as a regional operating decision: DuPont intended to consolidate production rather than maintain a dedicated Scottish site for the UK market. The cited cost and productivity benefits were the company’s rationale, not an independently validated comparison of facility costs or capacity.
What is known about the aftermath—and what is not
EDN’s contemporaneous report records the planned May 31, 2001 closure, the estimated number of affected employees, and the company’s relocation and delivery statements. It does not establish whether the closure occurred exactly on that date, what later happened to the Hamilton site, the eventual outcomes for the affected workers, or whether customer deliveries remained uninterrupted.

A separate UK government semiconductor-sector study updated September 2, 2026, identifies MacDermid Alpha, formerly Compugraphics, as a UK-based supplier of dedicated photomasks to the European semiconductor industry. The study provides present-day sector context, but does not connect the company to the former Hamilton facility or indicate that it took over that site’s work: UK Semiconductor sector study 2026.
